Staff were organized and friendly. I had my purse searched upon entry; all bags were looked at. My ticket was purchased through Vivid Seats, and apparently they didn't provide me a legit theater-issued QR so I had to visit the box office. They were friendly and promptly issued me printed tickets. Lobby was a con because it's just small and cramped. This old building probably didn't have to house as much food and merch purchasing back in its day but the multiple concession lines were blocking people from just getting to the theater and accessing their seats. They have tons of low quality junk food for sale. The huge group sitting next to us had chicken fingers, fries, a ketchup smell that wouldn't go away... it was honestly ridiculous the food they allow in people's laps just to turn profits. I was surprised these people were buying full huge meals (that had to cost $40+ each for junk) at 3:30pm to hold it in their laps for a 1.75h kids' show. Whatever. Point is, if you haven't eaten and want to pay $40 for crap that will linger in your body, you will not go hungry here. Clean bathrooms were the right size to allow a packed house to process themselves in the 20min intermission timeframe. This includes the ladies room, which always takes longer, and it was for a kids' show, which adds even more time. I recommend pairing your visit with the Rutgers Zimmerli Art Museum if you have time. They are open until 6pm most nights.

Perfect view of the stage, but I don't think it really matters much where you are seated due to the design of the auditorium. The opener was a rising singer/songwriter named Aniyyah, born and raised in New Jersey. Aniyyah's DJ had some technical issues loading her music at the start of her set, but wow, she has a voice on her. She, along with Raheem DeVaughn and Eric made for a fantastic show. They are all extremely talented vocalists, but Raheem DeVaughn without a doubt stole the show with his stage presence. Eric Benét however truly surprised me. His voice is absolutely incredible live. The State Theatre did a major renovation back in 2020 and the interior was previously renovated in 2004. It's as if we have a piece of Broadway right in the middle of New Brunswick, New Jersey. I felt like I stepped right into the 1920s with their vintage design and architecture. The acoustics inside the theatre are phenomenal. I'm not sure if it was my seating, but the sound was so crisp and well balanced. I can understand why any artist would choose this theatre as their preferred venue to perform in. One important note is their designated passageway to the closest parking deck which would otherwise be a long walk in the freezing cold. We were able to use the enclosed heated hallway as a shortcut which leads directly from the garage to the State Theatre located on Livingston Ave. We almost walked right past the entrance to the passageway, so I wanted to make sure I shared it with anyone who has read this far into my review : ) It's been many years since I've come to see a show here, and I had an enjoyable experience. I look forward to checking out any of their other events in the near future.

The show was packed, which was cool. unfortunately, cool was not how one would describe the temperature in the room. It was boiling HOT!!! There were 3, yes 3, house fans (no AC at all) to cool off the whole crowd! Ridiculous! I made it a point to not move but the sweat was dripping down like I was in a sauna! The show itself was kind of cool, the lasers were fun but they do need a new sound person or sound equipment since the speakers often hit a frequency that, I was sure, would burst my eardrums. So all in all, if you do go pick a cooler night. (Personal opinion: not worth the 15 bucks. Except that if you reserve in advance you get tickets to eldorado bumper cars, which were A LOT of fun!)

REVIEW: "Here Lies Love" at the Broadway Theatre on September 3, 2023…read more This highly immersive show took nearly a decade to make it to Broadway, and I have to say it left me a bit cold. Pre-recorded disco pop is just not the way to my empty Sondheim heart. Written by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, this episodic musical covers the 20th century political history of the Philippines in ninety minutes with no intermission. The simplistic plot revolved around Imelda Marcos with Ferdinand more of a shadow figure. Constantly challenging their regime was Ninoy Aquino presented as Imelda's former childhood sweetheart. The set-up felt very much like the demagoguery in "Evita" but on a more shallow level like a Vegas-style variety review targeted to indiscriminate tourists much like Rock-a-Hula on Waikiki. The production's chief novelty is that the Broadway Theatre was turned into a Studio 54-era disco with multi-dimensional screens on the surrounding walls. The seats were removed to allow the actors to perform and move about on modular elevated walkways. Half the audience (including Jamie and me) stood on the main floor for the duration of the show...but that's not all. Between key scenes, we were signaled by uniformed ushers to move to allow for different configurations of the walkways. Periodically we were directed to dance as if no one was watching. All of this led to the inevitability of squashed feet and jousting elbows. It was exhausting, and even though we were past the days of mandatory social distancing, it made me feel anxious. The cast was energetic but frankly not all that impactful. Arielle Jacobs made an especially buoyant Imelda, but understudy Aaron Alcaraz delivered a particularly tone deaf Ferdinand. Conrad Ricamora fared much better as the fiery Aquino. A couple of other performers had standout moments: Reanne Acasio as Aquino's mother Aurora on the ballad, "Just Ask the Flowers" and Moses Villarama, the DJ, leading the chorus on "God Draws Straight", poignant given another Marcos is running the country now. It depends on what you're expecting. We were on the dance floor. On one side was a young girl and her mother from Manilla, on the other side, a loving father and his son. So many beautiful people, experiencing a musical biographical account of someone's life! The moving dance floor created an interactive experience for those of us on the floor, moving around as directed by a small staff. For those in the audience, I can only wonder what it was like for them to look down on us in the audience. The cast was incredible and the venue was an intriguing transformation. A truly interesting experience. One thing to note, in a dance/nightclub environment the BPM is constant and increases as time moves forward. That isn't the case in this production. This was a real disconnect for me between dance club environments in a Broadway performance. You can't have it all.

You just go to the Borough distribution location (schedule of locations posted online) at 12pm. It's getting harder and harder to get tickets over the years. You exchange at the box office 5:30pm-7:30pm. The show was 3 hours including a 20 minute intermission. I liked the show, it was more modern and diverse with Spanish singing & dialogue. I'm glad they're trying to make Shakespeare in the Park more interesting instead of the same traditional show year after year. Hopefully, there's more modern interpretations next year!

The beautiful world of Verona was replaced by a politicized spectacle set on the U.S.-Mexico frontier, complete with immigration agents and contemporary ideological messaging. Instead of Shakespeare, the audience was given a lecture. The bilingual concept was equally misguided. Not only did it abandon Shakespeare's language, but the Spanish itself felt crude, vulgar, and deeply disappointing. This was not the Spanish of Cervantes or Ortega y Gasset. It was street slang, chabacano, burdo, and grosero, utterly out of place in one of the greatest works ever written. Romeo and Juliet were transformed into loud, hypersexualized Hispanic caricatures that bore no resemblance to Shakespeare's characters. Every subtle emotion was replaced by exaggeration. Every moment of poetry was drowned out by noise. The production seemed determined to substitute stereotypes for character development and provocation for artistry. The result was less Shakespeare and more a cheap carnival performance. Stratford-upon-Avon felt a million miles away. I wanted to cry out in horror during the opening scenes. We wanted to leave within the first five minutes but stayed until intermission in the hope that it might improve. It did not. Many others left as well; it was not just us. Adaptations can be daring. They can modernize and reinterpret. This production simply vandalized the play. It stripped away the beauty, elegance, poetry, and humanity of Romeo and Juliet and replaced them with a loud, vulgar, politically obsessed parody. An abomination!
