We visited Crane's Orchards on their opening day this year. Available apples included Macintosh, Gala and Blondee. There are at least a dozen other types of apples that become available throughout the season when they're ready for picking. When you arrive, the entrance sign tells you which apples are available. You check out samples if you want to taste a particular apple. Orchard is very well organized with plenty of staff available to direct you to the apple type you're looking for. There may be a nice walk involved getting to your preferred apples. Prices are reasonable and apple quality is excellent. We've been coming here once or twice a year for quite a while. One tip-bring your own bags (grocery store type will do) or you can buy a plastic bag there. Our apple baking season has officially begun with our first load of apples.

Pie flight. After we gobbled it down.

Fun way to spend the afternoon. Can't wait to try the pie flight apple, cherry, blueberry, and rhubarb raspberry. Yum! Such a cute place. Worth the drive! Oh, and no more port-a-potties.

Loved it! Such a great atmosphere! The pie flight is one of a kind and so yummy! We will definitely be going back whenever we take a trip back to the area.

I've been coming to Crane's since college, and you can have the most wholesome afternoon possible between picking your own apples and heading next door to the pie pantry. If you're a honeycrisp fan, you need to be on the lookout for when they'll be available for picking, as the trees will be barren of apples within 4-5 days. If you're too late, know that there are several juicy varieties available for picking including my favorite, jonagold apples. Don't let these average ratings deter you: Crane Orchards is THE place for apple picking in West Michigan!

We have been coming to Crane's for years for peach picking and sometimes pie eating. There are two separate businesses both names Cranes across the street from each other. We were warmly greeted and given samples of the peach varieties that were ripe for picking. They don't allow you to sample fruit from the tree which is a bit disappointing (and hard for the kids), but I appreciated the sample to determine what we wanted to pick. They gave good tips on what to look for to ensure peaches were ripe and since it had rained earlier, ensured we knew how to store the fruit. A bit expensive vs buying at the farmers market, but we enjoy this as a family activity (and one the teens still enjoy)!

I love Crane's U Pick and going supports a local business. I will admit to being biased as I am (at one time) a local. The first review felt they were disorganized which has not been my experience here at all. Even when busy, I found the opposite to be true. I like that they provide samples so that you can try the apples to see what variety you like. Then staff directs you to the area of the orchard to pick. Areas are labeled as well. In the fall they also have two corn mazes. It is an additional cost, but is not expensive. And again, corn maze!

Oh man, why the low rating?! We stopped by Crane's U Pick Orchard to pick some apples. First off, there's a few things you should know, if you're an apple newb like me: Not all apples are in season at the same time. The Honeycrisps won't be able to be picked at the same time as the Fujis. So, if you're after a certain type of apple, be sure to come when they are good for harvest. They let you sample the types of apples that are available for picking, BEFORE you pick them. Protip: Red Delicious are the suck. Cash/Check only. If you use their bags, it costs extra. When we went, we picked Janagold, Matsu and Ida Red apples. Janagold are great for eating raw AND for making applesauce (which I plan to do in a week or two), Matsu are like golden delicious (great for eating) and the Ida Red are great for pies. We got around 15lbs of apples for ourselves and lugged our haul to our car. This was one of the best parts of our trip and we had a great time. I never knew picking our own fruit could be so much fun!

We had a wonderful time visiting Cranes Orchards. I would absolutely recommend visiting. We were greeted by two very helpful and friendly ladies upon driving up, who helped us navigate to parking for the corn maze. We had a great time in the maze with our nieces and nephews. The kids had so much fun. Afterwards we went taste test the apples. The women helping explained each kind of apples they had that day, and she was very patient with the kids who asked some of the same questions over and over. I really appreciated her insight. We made the list of apple types we wanted and hit the orchard. We picked two of the four types and a nice man on a golf cart offered to give us a ride over to the other side of the orchard where the remaining two types of apples were located. It was a magical Autumn day and we created some wonderful memories. We will definitely come back!

We are obsessed with Crane's pie pantry so we thought we would go to the orchard this weekend for some fall fun.

For the drive thru safari, they have a variety of animals, from Alpacas to bears to camels to giraffes. You can purchase a bucket of feed for $9, but make sure you hold on to the bucket tight, because all of the animals are super strong! We ended up losing one of our buckets to the deer, haha! In the main farm area, they have some really cool play structures and tunnels that go underground and above ground. The kids had a blast crawling all over the place. Our favorites were the bird exhibit and the bear exhibit. The birds are not afraid of humans and will flock to you as soon as you enter their area. Im the bear section, we got to see the two brown bear brothers wrestle and "fight" over who got to sit in the pool. The brown bears were very interactive and would run with the children along the fence, back and forth. The biggest hit for our kids was the corn kernel area. It's essentially a giant pit filled with dried corn kernels. Our kids played in there for a good hour and didn't want to leave! It's also a great place to relax and cool down out of the heat. They have a bunch of animals that you can pet and hold if interested. For us, the safari was a great one time experience and likely wouldn't be something that we would drive through again, but the main play area is where we will definitely be going back to time and time again!

And it was fine! Better than fine because the blueberries were so good! I had no complaints. But now they've leveled up. Now it's not just good blueberries but good ambiance as well! They've converted another smaller building next to it as a storefront and it's chock full of blueberry based goodies like jams, jellies, baked goods, dips, mustards, beverages, etc. Way more to choose from! They also sell ice cream and added a play structure to help entertain the kiddos that get a little bored of picking (smart). The day of our visit it was around 100 degrees and humid so I was not up for picking myself. Instead I arrived ready to buy a box of pre-picked fruit in bulk like I had in the past. I walked into the cute new storefront, scanned the shelves, and panicked. There were no boxed berries to be seen! Was this no longer a thing?? U-pick only?? Why God why!? No need to panic, the really lovely woman at the counter explained to me. They just ran out because nobody wanted to pick in the heat (fair) and they had another load of blewbs (just processed and boxed) enroute and arriving at any moment, she just wasn't sure when exactly. Our time in town was limited so we decided we'd come back instead of waiting. She assured me there would be plenty available. And she was right! A couple of hours later we came back to find the coolers absolutely stocked full of 5lb boxes. I was fielding requests from the family back home to bring them some so in the end I bought 20 pounds worth. I also added a blueberry lemon coffee cake for good measure. Great visit! Wonderful changes! Lovely personnelle! And most importantly, the blueberries are still amazing. Next time I just hope it's cooler so I can get an ice cream cone that wasn't going to liquify the moment I stepped outside.
