I have been a patient at BCSS in since October 2017. I did extensive research regarding providers and services for transgender surgeries. I found BCSS highly recommended, reputable and well regarded in the transgender community, medical profession and one of the best practices in the world. I am going to have one of the most complicated surgeries, I wanted the best. After my consult with Dr. Safir, I wanted him to do my surgeries. He is one of the kindest and compassionate doctors I have ever met. His knowledge and experience made me feel at ease. This was one of the biggest decisions I have ever made in my life. I felt confident and positive about choosing Dr. Safir as my surgeon. He has been there for me every step of the way. I live on the opposite coast and he gave me his cellphone number so I could text or call him if I needed him. He is calm when I am scared or anxious and that is exactly what I need. In addition, the nurses that I reach out to responded immediately if I am in an emergency or within 24 hours for non-emergency question. They have been very reliable and dependable in my time of need. If you are seeking the best services, be prepared to wait. Plan ahead, start the process and keep up with the process. Do your part. Get the documents they need and ask for in a timely manner to keep the process going. I waited to get my consult, I waited to get my appointment, I waited to get my surgery and it was all worth every wait! These surgeries are specialized and if you want the best, you will wait. Wendy has been my champion. She does her best to provide me with the best schedule that aligns my timeframe with Dr. Safir's schedule. She is very considerate of my travels, my job and my surgical needs. The facility is clean and well kept. My surgical team and anesthesiologists were absolutely wonderful. The team addressed my needs so I had the best experience possible. Every person I have interacted with at this office have been courteous and welcoming. They have been a part of my journey and I can't imagine going through this process without my team of experts helping me every step of the way. I highly recommend this practice to anyone considering transgender surgery and I highly recommend Dr. Safir as he is the best doctor I could have ever imagined. I look forward to my upcoming procedure and next chapter of my journey. I know above all that I am in good hands...the best of hands. Update: I returned to this center December 2019 for my planned surgery with Dr. Safir. The center made some updates to team and facility. The new team members are amazing. They are all very kind and supportive. The two new PAs, Alex and Gigi are awesome. They assist with post surgery care and respond quickly to emails or phone calls when needed. DO NOT GO HERE When it's all said and done, I will have wasted two years of my life arguing about insurance and needed letters - All along I had the correct insurance. The office staff are beyond negligent and misinformed. I cannot begin to describe the deep regret I have wasting so much time with this establishment. They take zero responsibility and will withhold treatment when you get upset about their negligence. I wish I could have the time back. After I posted my original complaints the practice manager at Crane, Michael, reached out and offered a phone call. My partner and I spoke with him for a solid hour, detailing everything and hearing good responses. Michael told us Dr. Jun would give me a call and it sounded like things were headed in the right direction. Over 2 weeks later there was no follow up to this, so I sent an email to Michael, which went unanswered. Then a week after that email I sent another follow up asking for a long term dilation schedule (they give you no instructions after 3 months) if there wasn't going to be the promised follow up. Michael responded simply by giving appointment times. I was shocked, after speaking for an hour it was if our entire conversation had not happened. I stated as such, and he accused me of not liking Dr. Jun's "style" and basically made it so I had to come in to get a dilation schedule moving forward. I opted to only see Dr. Jun's PA Alex for the appointment, the long term PTSD from Dr. Jun's treatment of me has made it impossible for me to see him. I tremble at the very idea of Dr. Jun seeing me naked ever again with how condescendingly rude he was to me at my most vulnerable moments with no remorse, and how he continued the same behavior. The appointment was hard. I was crying throughout most of it, its hard to have to beg for basic medical needs from an organization that was supposed to be there for me. It turns out the stitches on my labia minora failed (and as a result I have almost no labia minora) and I have hard scar tissue at the entrance of my canal. The only solution to this is further surgery, now with an unfamiliar surgeon down the road that I have to find, and it scares the hell out of me. No matter how hyped a surgeon might be, no matter how good you think their results might be, how you are treated matters. Especially for something as sensitive as genital surgeries. Do yourself a favor for your mental and physical health and look elsewhere for care, Dr. Jun is just not worth it. I still have not heard a word from him since 3 weeks post op, despite his being CC'd on nearly every email with the practice and Michael. A little compassion makes all the difference when it comes to gender affirming care, and its a quality Dr. Jun lacks. I regret this surgery with every part of my being. read more

This is really bizarre seeing anyone say anything bad about Dr. Crane. When I got my surgery he notified me all the risks and we had many consultations. He made me feel comfortable and I went through with the surgery. I was worried a week or two after my surgery, I sent Dr. Crane a text message on a weekend and responded right away and told me to send pictures. I sent pictures and he let me know what I was going through was normal and he was right. I am very proud and finally feel comfortable in my own body thanks to Dr. Crane. He is the best Transgender Surgeon in the world for a reason. read more

Ive been trying to get a hold of someone in the office for my surgery date a week now and have yet to even hear a soul. They do not care about you. If you do not constantly call and keep up they have no qualms abandoning your case entirely. I have been waiting for a surgery date for over a week now. Absolutely ridiculous. I had ALT phalloplasty with Dr Crane in Feb 2015. I've worked closely with 3 different surgeons from this office throughout my process of 6 surgeries and appreciated the care and respect I was shown by each. If you are looking for gender confirmation surgeries, I can't recommend this office enough. The staff is friendly & helpful, the surgeons are top-notch and they will do whatever it takes to make sure you are happy with your results. I think it's important people understand how difficult these surgeries are. It is a process. A process that takes its toll on us emotionally and physically. These are some of the most skilled & compassionate surgeons in the world, but complications will happen. What I found to be most important in choosing my surgeon is whether the surgeon was willing to go through this long process with me, listen to me and work to make sure I was happy with the results. I was able to clearly communicate my needs for having post op nipple sensation while also honoring my non-binary body identity. I had my GRS with DR. Thomas Satterwhite. It's been the biggest mistake I've ever done. Awful results, excruciating pain and recovery time and negligent behavior from this doctor. He isn't capable to own any responsibility of his practice, I had two corrective surgeries after my procedure with him. I had letters from doctors in the same field such as Marci Bowers, Gary Alter, Alexander Sinclair staying how detrimental was this surgery to my body and its functionality. And how this doctor didn't new what he was doing due the results and outcome of my genital area. Of course this doctor hasn't replied to any of my emails. I made the huge mistake to trust a newcomer, for a shorter waiting surgery date. Don't make the same mistake I did. I regret it every single day of my life. Ask transgender Heath services in sf how satisfactory is been this doctor with patients/clients. I personally know at least 12 patients from this doctor that aren't satisfied with the results and for one reason or another the genital area doesn't look like anything like an average vagina. I've struggled with deciding whether or not to write this review for quite some time, but the chaos I experienced leading up to receiving my care honestly calls for this. I was first referred to Brownstein and Crane Surgical Services by my Primary Care Physician in August 2017 for a bilateral double mastectomy with male reconstruction. I was finally provided a callback following my referral by my doctor after a month's wait, in September 2017. I was at work, and unfortunately missed this call, however when I called back the next day during their business hours, I was informed that due to me missing my phonecall and not calling back in a timely fashion, that I was therefore unable to confirm the consultation date they were going to provide me that day, and I will have to be provided with a new one. Understandable. I asked when my consult would have been; they said April 2018. I asked when my consult would be now that I called; December 2018. Over a year, simply for a consultation. I begged the receptionist/Scheduler/Whomever to please add me to whatever wait list they had, as my ribcage was (and still is) deformed from binding, and this was a surgery that I needed as soon as possible. Come December 2017, I was given a call back, and was provided a consult with Doctor Satterwhite in February 2018. My consultation went fine, Doctor Satterwhite seemed trustworthy and very knowledgeable about what he was doing, and I was also assured that not only were his results for cases like mine consistently phenomenal and symmetrical, that their office would be able to schedule me around my school schedule so I would not miss too many days. I then waited 8 weeks to receive my surgery date, which was scheduled for October 2018. Definitely not within the time frame I requested, smack in the middle of my college semester, but still doable. Fast forward to September 2018. I was called by their scheduler, who informed me that my letter of support provided by my therapist was invalid, as it did not follow their guidelines and 'had expired', and they were going to give me until the end of September to remedy the situation. I had provided this document months in advance. I scrambled to find a therapist to write me a new letter within their specifications, and was able to do this within several weeks. Situation after situation like this continued, such as; not faxing my doctor the correct documentation they needed him to sign, not providing my insurance proper documentation to cover my surgery, and at one point had sent my insurance a request for a completely different patient's surgery on accident. Finally, I received a letter in the mail at the very end of September 2018, less than a month before my surgery; I was informed that Doctor Satterwhite was announcing his departure from BCSS, and his final day in practice there would be October 16th, 2018. He had scheduled my surgery for October 18th, 2018, effectively cancelling my surgery as, once I called BCSS, they were unable to find another surgeon to fill my date. Eventually, after I called BCSS copious amounts of times, I was finally able to locate contact information for Align Surgical Services, Doctor Satterwhite's new practice. Unfortunately, his receptionist bore the brunt of my anger and frustration as I actually screamed my message for her to deliver to Doctor Satterwhite (that I did not appreciate being left in this situation at such short notice, and just how unprofessional I thought this was), but to my knowledge my message was delivered to him. I am unsure if it was a result of my complaining, or more likely many other of his patients calling as well, but Doctor Satterwhite remained on staff at BCSS for an additional two weeks, and was able to complete my surgery on the date scheduled. I thought this would be the end of my nightmare, but it unfortunately was not.One of my incisions was not stitched closed properly, despite me mentioning during my follow up to have my bandages removed that it seemed to be open. I was informed that this was normal, and not to worry about it. I ended up developing a severe infection in this site, which lasted almost a month, and has permanently affected the appearance and sense of feeling of my scar and skin in that area. Overall, even discounting the affect the infection had on the appearance of my scars, the results were... adequate at best. I can certainly live with the results (as I have no other choice to), but they are certainly not the phenomenal results I was promised, and definitely not worth the absolute nightmare I had to endure to get this final result. read more

Dr. Chen is absolutely incredible. He was my surgeon for a RFF phalloplasty in November and I couldn't be happier with my results. Not only is he a world renowned reconstructive urologist he also has impeccable bedside manner. I'm going back for Part II in November of 2017 for testicular implants and a semi-rigid rod. read more

Crane Center staff treats patients terribly and they do not take responsibility for mistakes that hurt patients. My best friend/housemate went to them because they were in-network with insurance. The office staff was rude and unhelpful when they were asked clarifying questions about the process when a surgical date was scheduled. My BFF kept having to reiterate the questions about what to expect in terms of preop (we were trying to plan for appointments and labs) because staff would not give a straight answer and acted annoyed at having to answer any questions. Surgery is a big deal to some of us, and my friend was trying to do everything right! Finally, they answered that they would not give the preop instructions or lab orders any sooner than 30 days prior to the surgery. So we waited three months. When it was 4 weeks out from surgery, BFF contacted Crane Center to ask for the preop packet, since it had not been sent yet as promised. That's when they told us that the surgery wasn't on the calendar. They later said the surgery was canceled but have given no explanation as to why. They didn't even bother to contact my friend at all when it was canceled. We paid a deposit for dog boarding, etc.and planned out most of this year, including tentative plans for other procedures, based on the date Crane gave my friend. It looks like Crane Center knows that they have the market cornered in Central Texas, and so they feel entitled to exploit trans patients to collect the consultation fees and never actually provide the care they offer. This has been an extremely dehumanizing experience for my friend. read more
