Doctor Hui is a very good cardiologist, intelligent, a lot of experience, cares about his patients. However, it is very difficult to get appointments whether you are a new patient or an existing patient, just FYI. There is at least one excellent physicians assistant, Connie, Wong, and also Excellent admin staff in the office to try and help with communications and back up. Dr. Hui says if it's an emergency, he will find a way to see me soon. Fortunately I haven't had emergencies to test this, but I have to believe it's true. I met Dr. Hui in 1997. He is still the best physician I have ever known in all of San Francisco. Brilliant thinker, skilled surgeon and highly intelligent. A super fast thinker and communicator. He is constantly learning, staying on top of data and trends. When my father and grandfather had heart issues, he gave expert analysis that saved and extended their lives. Fast forward a few decades, he revised an awful treatment plan I received from an uneducated physician. With his guidance and a quick trip to SimonMed for a calcium CT scan, I am feeling great and living well without meds! He is a true blessing to the medical field. Stay away from this unprofessional and rude front office staff. I received a Referral from my PCP for a cardiology follow-up HealthNet Video consultation and got a prelim phone call from a front office staff member named" Marisol". She proceeded to interrogate me about my medical histology and RX intake rudely for about a half an hour over the phone, when she knew full well that my medical history is well and thoroughly documented on the " Sutter MyHealth App" and has been forwarded by the ER Attending at St. Mary's Hospital at Nauseaum. This needless, insensitive, rude interrogation by incompetent staff members at Sutter Health needs to cease, especially during this Covid Pandemic, where real people with real health problems are at the mercy of physicians and staff who work from home and feel " separated " and immune from criticism and repercussions! I have recorded the phone conversation between the staff member and myself and mentioned that during the follow-up " incident" phone call with another person from Dr. Hui's Office named " Maria". She shrugged it off as " My Perception " and attempted to blame me for the " incident ". After I told her that I have recorded the Initial phone conversation with " Marisol" she hung up on me! For a patient who just got released from the ER with serious Proximal Vagal Afib and in cardiac distress, I was hoping for a more empathetic approach. But, I guess that is Just too much to ask from a poorly run outfit like Sutter and Dr. Hui's Office. Way to go, Sutter! Another reason to switch read more

While Sutter Health can be aggravating in constantly updating your medical history, if you focus on the quality of medical advice and services, Dr. Hui is the best. I have coronary heart disease and a leaky mitral valve that he quickly diagnosed and helped me understand what the battery of tests I took meant in terms of the severity of my condition and the options to treat it. We determined that I needed surgery to repair the mitral valve and he referred me to Dr. Glenn Egrie, a great cardiothoracic surgeon, and also helped me get a second opinion just to assure me we were doing the right thing. We also determined that I didn't need a bypass for one of my coronary arteries, which made my heart surgery less complicated. Dr. Hui is patient, listens well, and explains medically complex topics in very simple terms so you can clearly understand your situation. Many of the complaints in other reviews have to do with Sutter staff bureaucracy and should not reflect poorly on Dr. Hui. He is a great cardiologist and really knows his stuff. read more

I thought Dr. Hui and his staff were outstanding in every way: - Worked with me to get me in to see him quickly - He took the time to both understand what was going on and then to explain his preliminary diagnosis and next steps - I needed a number of additional tests done and his staff scheduled them immediately, even following up with me by phone (how often does one find a doctor with a pro-active staff?) Dr. Hui is the rare genius you will come across in medicine today. He thinks for himself, studies your individual case in advance of your meeting and goes back and studies it again till he gets it! I cannot say enough about Dr. Hui being an exceptional doctor now that I have been in the extremely broken and concerning world of medicine. Dr. Hui, in 2 meetings, solved my complicated condition which 5 other cardiologists passed over as they didn't take the time to really analyze my case. 3 of them were in his practice (!!) and 2 at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Everyone medical circumstances are unique and different - and here's mine: On November 3, 2009, God dispatched him to save my life at the CPMC Cath Lab by repairing a main artery that was 100% blocked. I was told that he was strategically and professionally medically relentless in surgery which generally lasts about 90 minutes that turned into a little over 3 hours. I was very happy after my two visits to Dr. Hui this year. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained the relevant cardiology to me in detail. The necessary stress test was scheduled quickly and without reluctance. After the test, he took time to go over the results with another CPMC doctor and made sure both doctors agreed on the interpretation in my presence. It turned out that I didn't have anything terribly wrong with me, so your experience may vary. One warning---Dr. Hui may come across as a bit rushed. It seems to be just a manner of speech/action, however. He is very quick to grasp things and seems to want to relay them to the patient at the same speed. He took the necessary time to go over my case during the first appointment and managed to remember the relevant details four months later. read more

Before meeting Dr. Hui, I was diagnosis with a 100% blocked LAD through an angiogram and was a good candidate for heart medication. About a year after, I was referred to Dr. Hui by my cardiologist who was leaving to go across the east bay to continue her practice. My first meeting with Dr. Hui was impressionable because he took the time to look through my medical history beforehand. Dr. Hui also showed me for the first time, the video of the angiogram that was performed a year ago. While viewing the video, Dr. Hui explained and pointed out the blocked area and the collateral veins that was supplying the help to the LAD. He asked me questions and told me what he saw on the video and spelled out for me the situation and recommendation. Dr. Hui was not rushing me to make a hurried decision for a stent intervention but that he wanted me to think about and talk over with my wife what our next steps should be. But that decision would be up to me. He was open to the fact that I could call him at any time for questions and that still holds true now. My decision to go forward for an angioplasty procedure weighed in also on the fact that we ran into one of my co-workers who 5 years ago had the same procedure by Dr. Hui. He spoke highly of Dr. Hui as I am now. In January, I had a angioplasty procedure which required 3 stents. The incline hills that was once before a breathing challenge while exercising has now ceased because of the recommendation of Dr. Hui. I highly recommend Dr. Hui if you are looking for a good cardiologist who is personable, caring and thorough. read more

Dr. Hui saved my husband's life. He was calm, confident, brilliant and acted as fast as possible to see that my husband got the surgery he needed as quick as possible. My only regret is that we didn't see him earlier. He continues to be a source of health, wellness and information for our family. In that way he continues to save our lives! I have been going go Dr. Hui for many years now, and I've seen a decline in the quality of his care. I started with him because of how many excellent reviews Yelp had on him, as you can see. He was very concerned at first, and did a decent job at being thorough and issuing the appropriate diagnostics and tests for my condition. Over the last few years, the office has felt like it's become a factory. Dr. Hui is still quite popular, I believe he is a lead figure in the cardiology dept and gets a lot of recognition. However, care has taken a turn for the more perfunctory. He is quite busy and breezed through my charts, ordered yearly tests (in this case, echocardiogram), and bounced. When I received the results, the report described recommendations based on the test assuming I had an ENTIRELY different heart condition than the one I actually have... as in, there is no issue about what disease I have, rather this was a profoundly negligent error on the doctor's part. This isn't like going to your primary doctor for a casual checkup, this was a YEARLY heart condition check up. But what really made me decide I need a new cardiologist is that I asked if Dr. Hui could follow up with me about the results or I would even be willing to schedule an additional appointment to come in so he could explain the results to me. I was told that it is their office policy for a nurse to follow up with the test results and that Dr. Hui does not do that as standard policy. Standard policy??? For anyone with a heart condition who knows the importance of information that is contained in an echocardiogram, that probably gives you pause. I have a great respect for Dr. Hui for having looked after me over the last few years and always doing what he earnestly thinks is right, but I think the office's shift to this idea of getting people through the conveyor belts of their office is very negligent. If you have a condition and you're only going to a cardiologist once a year or so, your heart deserves better care and attention. Feel free to try Dr. Hui, but if your experience feels the same as mine, don't settle this kind of perfunctory care. I have recommendations I could give to you, but it would be poor manners for me to list them out here, so you can just do more searching or message me if you wish. Update 1/2015: Ever since I posted this review, I now regularly get messages from yelpers who tell me they have had a similar experience and ask me for my recommendations. I'm sad to know that many other people have had to deal with poor treatment at this office as well, but I am happy to see people aren't willing to put up with it. I am giving a 1-star, not because of Dr. Hui. Dr. Hui and his assistants and/or technicians, Paul, Kathy, Karen and Jamie are all nice, kind, sweet and helpful! They are all wonderful people! I am giving a 1-star because of the 2 EXTREMELY RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL receptionists in the front desk!! They both have very bad attitudes and have no smiles at all!!! The first time when I went to make an appointment because of my palpitation, this older Caucasian female receptionist asked me "have you or any of your family been here before?" And I answered "no, I haven't, but my mom had in the past." Then, she started saying: "Well, Dr. Hui is fully booked and all his assistants are at lunch or a meeting" so she doesn't know his schedule! She said "you better go to the ER and we cannot schedule for you just because your mother has been here before!" That the most stupidest thing a front desk receptionist can say to a patient!! That's TOTALLY NOT even what I meant!! I just wanted to know if I can see Dr. Hui ASAP since my heart been beating so fast recently and she's the ONE who ASKED me that question in the beginning. That's why I am just answering her question back!! She needs TONS of customer service training!!! Yesterday I went to the office to put on a 24-hour holter monitoring machine. So this morning I have to go back to the office to take off the little machine and also need to do an echo, which is an ultrasound for the heart. When I first stepped into the office, this younger Asian female receptionist who wears glasses asked me what my name is and I provided my name and she thought I have an appointment to see a certain dr, maybe because I have the same name as another patient. Then I answered her back "no, I am here to take off the 24-hour holter monitoring machine and echo." Then she said " ok, have a sit!" After a couple of minutes, she asked me to go up to the front desk. She confirmed if I am this patient by confirming my address and phone number in a very loud voice, almost all other patients can hear!!!! Does she know what HIPAA means? Then she asked me why I didn't mention "echo" earlier in an EXTREMELY RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL TONE of voice!!!! She said I have to tell her exactly what my appointment is for!! I remembered I did, maybe my voice was kind of soft so she didn't hear me. PLUS even if I didn't or I forgot to mention it, she asked me what's my name is and I provided both my first and last name to her, so if she can pay more attention and if she wasn't so LAZY, all my record and information are under my name on the computer and it should show or mention what my appointment is for without me telling her, which the computer is RIGHT in front of her!!! This receptionist is EXTREMELY RUDE, MEAN, LAZY and DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She needs a lot more CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING than the other receptionist!! I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this office!! If it's not because of these 2 DISRESPECTFUL receptionists, I would have given a 5-star to Dr. Hui and these other wonderful nice people in the back! These 2 disrespectful receptionists are causing a huge trouble to the office by scaring all the patients away because they are the first 2 people in the front that all patients will see first before seeing any doctors, assistants and technicians in the back! Most importantly, most or all of the patients who come to this office because they have a heart problem or not feeling too well and this is not the right way of how they should treat patients who are not feeling well!! read more

Dr. Hui is an amazing physician who saved my mom's life. We were referred to Dr. Hui by my mother's primary care physician because we were looking for a cardiologist who speaks fluent Cantonese. She had a thorough initial cardiac workup that was unremarkable. I feel fortunate we established the relationship at that time; a short while later, my mom had a major heart attack. When we went to the ER, it was helpful that she was already patient of Dr. Hui, as her information was in the system and it seemed all the nurses, technicians and residents held him in high regard. My mom was diagnosed with a several blocked arteries and Dr. Hui ended up inserting 3 stents. On more than one occasion, one of the medical staff would say "Don't worry, your mom is in good hands. If I needed a catheterization, I would go to Dr. Hui. He's the best." He was also able to explain everything in Cantonese with native fluency to my mom so she felt very reassured. Dr. Hui also prescribed a post-op cardiac rehab program at CPMC, which was excellent and got my mom exercising regularly in a gym for the first time in her life. I would also highlight that he is able to attract an excellent medical team to work with him. The nurses, technicians, physician assistants and schedulers are all top notch (and some of them also are fluent in Cantonese). As an added bonus, he's very funny and witty. If there is any downside to being his patient, I would say that he's a very busy guy and it's sometimes a challenge to reschedule appointments if needed. Also the front desk seems thinly staffed and many times there is a long hold time to speak to someone. read more

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, I was taken to the CPMC Emergency Room with severe chest pains. An EKG showed that I was having a heart attack. Very fortunately for me, Dr. Peter Hui was called in to help me. He did a catheterization to diagnose an arterial narrowing and, later that same day, inserted a stent into the artery to open it. His quick diagnosis and his assurance throughout the process made me as comfortable and relaxed as possible under the circumstances. During my hospitalization, Dr. Hui's team of physicians and nurses kept me informed about the treatments I was receiving so that I understood what was occurring. Now, three weeks later, I am feeling much better and am cautiously approaching normal activity. I was very fortunate that Dr. Hui was available to fix the problem, help me through the emergency, and continue to help me on my path to full recovery. His professionalism and true concern for his patients are quite apparent and I recommend him without reservation. read more

NOTE: This review is not for the actual doctor, as I never got the chance to have an appointment with him. This review is about the troubles I experienced when attempting to schedule an appointment. My PCP referred me to Dr. Hui's office in August. I called them to schedule an appointment after my doctor sent the referral in. They said that Dr. Hui likes to review new patient's records and that they would reach out to me to schedule an appointment as soon as he had done that. I didn't hear back from them for the entire month of September, so I called back in early October to try to schedule an appointment again. They told me the exact same thing, and I mentioned that I had been told this already in August but still hadn't heard back from them. They apologized and said they would review my record and then reach out to schedule an appointment. Two weeks went by and I didn't hear anything, so I called again (last week) and got the same response. I explained that they had already told me this twice, and they apologized and said they'd get back to me the same day. I still haven't heard anything and it's been a week. I have reached out to my PCP to ask for a referral to a different cardiologist. read more

This time I have to say that I got it right - spot on. I had the exceptional good fortune to be accepted as a new patient by Dr. Peter Y. M. Hui and his excellent staff. When I first met Dr. Hui, I knew that I had not only found the best hospital but also, by the Grace of God, the person that I could trust to save my life. Very rarely do results meet expectations, but in this case, the results were all that I could have expected and much more. I am writing on behalf of my mother who has been a patient of Dr. Hui's since early 2011. Dr. Hui is a highly professional and compassionate cardiologist. He was very clear and deliberate in explaining her diagnosis. He took the time to ensure that she understood the issues. When she had her stents inserted- he peformed the complex procedure with precision. His staff is very welcoming and attempts to accomodate all reasonable scheduling needs. My mother is very happy with her decision to have Dr Hui take care of her. read more

My father speaks limited english and went to see Dr. Hui mainly because he speaks chinese and he thought it would be easier to communicate. He was very disappointed with his experience with Dr. Hui over a 2-3 year period. One time, Dr. Hui prescribed meds to reduce blood pressure apparently because of a slightly elevated blood pressure reading during one office visit. My father's GP checked his records and said he did not need to take blood pressure meds as he had no history of high blood pressure. Dr. Hui wrote a prescription for 10 refills of the blood pressure medication and never bothered to follow up. On the advice of his GP, my father did not take the blood pressure reducing meds. On another occasion, Dr. Hui and/or his pacemaker staff changed multiple parameters in my father's pacemaker without first letting him know or for any apparent reason. Within hours after they changed the pacemaker parameters my father started feeling ill and short of breath. Since my father had not had any symptoms for months prior to when his pacemaker parameters were altered, it seemed likely his symptoms were caused by those changes. After being unable to contact Dr. Hui by phone, I sent Dr. Hui and his associates a letter requesting they change my father's pacemaker settings back which they first declined to do, claiming the changes they made could not cause his symptoms. Finally, they had a device tech from the pacemaker manufacturer change the parameters back and my father's symptoms immediately resolved. Afterward, Dr. Hui and his associates sent my father a certified letter stating that they no longer wanted him as a patient due to "my interference". Of course, he would not have returned to Dr. Hui after that experience anyway. My father currently is seen at the UCSF cardiology faculty practice and electrophysiology clinic and has never had any problems there despite some occasional language difficulties. read more

My experience with Dr. Hui has been nothing but great. He and his office staff have always been professional, kind and competent. By way of example, he performed an angiogram that went flawlessly, and his assistant followed up immediately the next day to schedule an appointment and other tests. While I have felt with other doctors that I carry the burden of following up and, at times, even hounding the doc, Dr. Hui and his staff have been the ones to initiate follow-ups and stay in contact -- always with efficiency and professionalism. read more

Dr. Hui has been my cardiologist for several years. He has monitored my mitral valve problem with patience and commitment. I am amazed that, with the demands made on these highly skilled doctors, he has devoted so much time to helping me. I had a simple valve repair and since then I have had issues with the rest of the heart and he's been there for me 100%. He fits me in as soon as he can, makes sure my questions are answered, and follows up with me by phone. He is an excellent technician and is very much respected by the hospital staff, which is so reassuring. He has the nearly impossible job of juggling office appointments, procedures (many of them last minute emergencies), hospital visits, etc. His staff is outstanding and has been extremely supportive through my many visits. I have actually found that his bedside manner has improved substantially since I started with him. He cares and does not back down from the difficult cases. I've been seeing Dr. Hui since 2001 for a condition called aortic stenosis. He is by far the most competent, diligent and concise physician I've ever had. He always answers all of my questions in a clear manner and never tries rushing me out of the office. I too had an angiogram a few months ago and the procedure went flawlessly. The only negative I'll mention is the tendency to push one off onto his physician's assistant. She is good but I selected Dr. Hui for his expertise and sometimes have to demand to see him. However, that's a small price to pay for his expertise. read more

When my 89 year mom complained of increasing pain on her left side of her body, we contacted her primary doctor immediately. Her primary care doctor treated her for a stomach ailment and ordered blood testing, chest X-Ray and EKG. According to her primary care doctor, no anomalies were noted. As the week progressed, the discomfort was increasing in intensity. We again visited her primary care doctor who then referred her to a 'specialist' who diagnosed her as suffering from muscle pain, possible inflicted during a fall that she failed to mention to the family. Another X-Ray was ordered. Again, no anomalies were found. A week later, the pain to her left side of her body was increasing to an intolerable level. We immediately rushed her to CPMC's Emergency Room where a blood test and EKG was performed. Within an hour, it was confirmed that my mom has suffered a heart attack! Dr. Peter Hui, a cardiologist at the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco, explained to us that two arteries were 99% blocked and that he will insert a stint to open the blockage. Within a very short time span, Dr Hui and his team successfully implanted the stint. After the procedure, Dr. Hui showed us the before and after images of the treated area. Dr Hui kept us informed at all times, he listened to our concerns with great attention and was very professional at all times. Dr Hui possesses the skills to interpret the test results and to take the corrective immediately.
