My appointment was at 9am. He shows up at 8:54. I call him to tell you im on the freeway then asked him if he can go in through my side door to view the fence. He sounded annoyed and said he had 14 other appointments. He doesn't even try to go in through side door. leaves at 8:56 without even calling me. I show up to my house at 9:03 and call him no answer. You obviously don't want customers. I was gonna give you an entire job to replace my entire back fence but at this point I will call another fencing company. I had about $14,000 worth of fencing done around my property, which is on a hill. The required retaining boards were delivered, but the foreman started the fence without using them. I had to argue with him to get the retaining boards installed, which he finally did, but he failed to sink the boards into the soil, which has resulted soil sliding down under the fence into the neighbor's yard. It is too late to fix it without tearing out the fence. I had to supervise the job more than I liked, and some other issues slipped by. They have said they will come by and fix the other issues, but nothing so far. read more

Storm knocked down a huge portion of our fence right before we were to leave town. Spoke to Russ and he and his crew got a new fence put up quickly. Beautiful redwood will last the test of time. My review seems to mirror some of the other Yelper's reviews... I contacted Craig Fencing to get a quote for approximately 80' of side fencing as well as 2 RV gates that I wanted to have replaced. After a brief conversation with the woman (Mrs. Criag) on the phone to schedule the quote I told her that I was going to get 2 or 3 quotes for the fencing/gates and whoever came in with the best quality for the money would get the job. She immediately told me that they were not interested in competing with other fence contractors in the area and were no longer interested in bidding our job. Really?! With an attitude like that I have no idea how you are still in business. Do yourself a favor and don't call these clowns. We ended up hiring A&J Fencing for the job and they did a fabulous job! read more

Quote I received from them was 2x more than the other 4 quotes I received, all same spec's and materials. The other 4 quotes were all in the same ball park. Craig quoted $90/ft, all the others were around $40-$50 a foot. Why the difference? We're talking some redwood and a little cement. Oh and 12 weeks out, "but maybe we could fit you in earlier". Don't recommend this company unless you like to overpay for something as common as a fence and wait 3 months to get on their schedule. read more

Updated Review: After calling four times and waiting for a month, I finally received a call from Mr. Craig, telling me that someone will come fix the fence. He apologized for not calling sooner, and explained to me that he had a family member who has been ill. Someone did come and did fix the gap I complained about between the fence and the gate. Now there is no gap. The person who fixed the gate just added another panel of the fence over the existing one, so now the fence, unfortunately, is visually awkward. It did fix the problem with my toddlers, but still I wished this issue would not have happened to begin with. I adjusted my review from one star to three stars, because Mr. Craig did respond and fixed the problem. ----- (Previous review) I must agree with the previous reviewer. Craig called me back right away when I initially called to get an estimate. He showed up on the day that the work was done, to get a check from me. However, he never calls me back when my gate door started to not become flash to the fence, and also the gap between the fence and the gate started to widen within just a few month after we installed it. I called him every week, to ask him to come over and fix the problem. So far, he has not called me back. I have three toddlers, and with the gap of the fence and the gate door widening, I am very afraid of their arms getting caught to the gap. (They could squeeze their hands in if they choose to now.) I thought it would be wise for them to fix the problem now before it gets worse, because if anything happens to my children because of their poor workmanship, I will have to report the case to appropriate places. I don't know how much Craig understand the issue that I am having. I still hope he calls and deal with the problem, but I am not sure if that happens. read more

We just had a backyard fence built by Craig Fencing and I am pleased by their professional work and attention to detail. The job foreman asked many questions and made suggestions throughout the process of building the fence. I really appreciated this attention to detail about the design that I hadn't thought about. Russ was responsive with emails and clear about when they would start the work, how long and how payment would work. Russ checked in on the job to make sure things were going well with his team and to touch base with us. Russ recommended redwood stain for us to use to preserve the wood's color. Craig Fencing installed fences and gates in about year 2000. Fence to left side of house began leaning toward neighbor about 8 or so years later and pulled away from gate so gate wouldn't work properly. While having some work done at the house by my wife's contractor brother, he anchored fence to house so fence wouldn't lean and repaired the gate. Fast forward to June 2016. Rest of fence failing and leaning badly toward neighbor. Called Craig Fencing. They came out on June 1 and gave estimate to reinforce fence with additional support posts. My wife signed contract on June 6. Then received an email indicating they'd squeeze us in when working in Lamorinda Area within two months. Didn't hear from them for about 3 months so called them. Was then told that they were still at least 2 months out to fix the failing fence that they installed. Then was told that they didn't really want the job because it was too small and they didn't make any money on it. Now having to hire another fence company. I GUESS THEY DON'T WANT ANY REPEAT BUSINESS. WOW! Finally, around the time of original installation, we recommended Craig Fencing to friends in Lafayette. Their fence also failed. THINK TWICE BEFORE HIRING THEM. read more

I got a handful of estimates for fence building, and decided to use Craig Fencing since he was able to price match my lowest estimate and he also had an excellent rating in Checkbook magazine. The only time I met Russ Craig (owner) was only when he came over and gave me an estimate. Otherwise, we only conversed by email and phone. BTW, he is very difficult to get a hold of either way. (Notice there is no physical address, just a PO Box). The day of the work, only a crew of Mexicans arrived, but not him. I didn't even see him when it came time to inspect the work or pay the bill. They built 120' of fence using con common wood and pressure treated posts. If you do use this company, STAY AWAY FROM PRESSURE TREATED POSTS. They do not guarantee/warranty the work when the posts twist and bend and makes your fence unstable. The work was mediocre, considering it was a fence. They didn't add gravel to the posts holes to allow for drainage and the quality of wood selected was poor with knots that came out leaving holes and splintered boards. The gate hardware installed was of cheap quality too. When one of my Pressure Treated Post twisted and bent to the point where the nails separated from the top rail making the fence unstable, this company will not do anything to fix this, even though he knows this happens and everyone else in the industry knows this too. As a top rated company in Checkbook magazine, you would think that he would wait for the posts to dry and cure before installing them so you can see if they twist and bend before installing them. My neighbor got his fence done by A&J Fence and looking at the work, I should've got it done by them instead, and they were much less expensive too. Considering how expensive my estimate was without the price match, you would think that the quality of wood and work would be outstanding, but is wasn't. Unless you get a much lower estimate than all the other fence builders, which is doubtful, avoid Craig Fencing. There are other fence building that do better work for much less, and with better quality wood. read more

Last Fall I needed an 11 foot gate re-built on my side yard. Craig Fencing was recomended to me by my neighbor and the company that built my retaining wall. California Retaining Walls is Excellent BTW. Russ Craig came out, said his crew could handle the job in 1-2 days and said he would send a formal quote. Russ followed up w/ a quote, then went dark! After many emails/calls, I couldn't get this guy to actually put me on the schedule. It was always, "next week". What a joke! I decided to hire a real company (Chadlin Industries from Fairfield) to build a real gate -steel frame with redwood face. Awesome! Thanks for blowing me off Russ. Craig Fencing just installed a top quality new fence for me, and I'm extremely happy with it. The crew did a great job, and cleaned up everything as it was before they started. The fence boards are heartwood, so they have that nice reddish hue, and no white-ish stripes like I've seen on other fences. The owner Russ comes to do the estimate and then follows through on building the fence as promised. They removed the old concrete from the original posts, and added a concrete cap on every new post base, so water runs off and dirt doesn't build up around the bottom of the post, thereby improving longevity. They put a lot of effort into digging deep holes for each post. I got square lattice as a topper for the front fence and it adds architectural interest to the house. The cost is a little higher than other fence companies but it is well worth spending a little more to get high quality workmanship and materials that will last. read more

Just adding to my last review. Craig Fencing replaced the fence along one of the two long sides of my property, plus 3 gates. The work was again excellent and the work crew was very pleasant and accommodating. The job required a lot more brush clearing on the neighbor's side than either I or Russ Craig had anticipated; they were cheerful and philosophical about it nonetheless. I was especially impressed by the fact that the crew carefully created a beautiful cut out around a largish tree limb, despite the fact that I'd told them I'd be okay with having it cut off if necessary. They were absolutely correct in their assessment; the tree would have looked awful if the limb had been cut , and instead, the tree and the fence look just gorgeous. We got our referral for Craig Fencing from our realtor who told us that she had used this contractor both for herself and recommended him to other clients. -we should have looked them up on YELP!! The owner, Roger Craig, came to do the bid him self, walked our property with my husband. measured and did all you'd expect him to do, including giving his verbal guarantee that the fence would meet all code requirements. When his crew arrived, only one person spoke English - the "supervisor" - Mr Craig did not show up but for a few minutes at the beginning of the day, ostensibly to give directions on how we wanted the fence built. Imagine our surprise when we went out to check on the progress later in the morning and found that the workers had no understanding that the fence was to be built to follow the contour of our terraced land and to block our view of our neighbor's yard. We tried unsuccessfully to reach Mr. Craig and finally my husband had to draw out the plans for the supervisor. The supervisor was finally able to understand what we wanted and made the corrections. However, the digging the workers did on the incorrect work resulted in much of our hillside being dig away, therefore they put in retaining boards instead of replacing the soil. this resulted in the fence height being out of code compliance by 24" on the back side of the fence. We had contracted for a 6' fence. With the added retaining wall they constructed the fence was 8' tall on the back and 6 feet in our side which was terraced - a clear code violation. We had also contracted with Craig Fence to replace a long flight of exterior stairs. The builders had no idea how to build stairs so that they were each the same height and came out correctly spaced at the fixed top and bottom landings. Again my husband had to show the workers how to do the math to make this come out correctly. . The builders almost got it right - after several tries on several steps. They still had to put in an additional 12x2 step directly on the cement landing so that the last step wasn't too low. They also did not level the steps and had to re-do the first few after I tested them and found them to be dangerous and a fall hazard. SLOPPY! Again - no Mr Craig. When the job was finished, Mr Craig walked our side of the fence and stairs and declared it fine. When we informed Mr Craig of the code violation he told us the code issue was "our problem" and would not remedy the situation that he had caused by not giving his workers instructions on the fence plan. I would not recommend Craig Fencing to anyone and am very sorry we did business with him. Buyer Beware! read more

My neighbor contracted Craig Fencing to install a new fence between our properties. Several weeks later, I returned home to find my front yard full of tree trimmings and fence debris, my back yard hose hooked up to my front yard water spout, tool belts and other equipment scattered around my property, and an electric cord plugged into my backyard power outlet. Needless to say, I was very surprised and upset as I had never spoken to any one from Craig Fencing. The next day, I returned home from work to find the fence finished but one of my gate posts had been shaved half way through and my terrace system had been broken to make way for the fence. My advice would be to stay away from Craig Fencing. Very unprofessional. read more

I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of customer service. I moved into a home a couple years ago that had a new, beautiful fence built by Craig Fencing. Within months we had problems with the gate. It would expand and shrink (in varying weather) to such a degree that it would fly open (when it shrank) or it became nearly impossible to close (very tight when it expanded). Finally the gate was so tight that closing it was damaging the wood. That's when I noticed that the gate was not hanging straight. I decided that I would call Craig Fencing to fix it - even if I had to pay for the fix myself (i.e. even if it was not covered by warranty) because they built such a beautiful fence and I wanted to maintain it to that standard. I contacted them by phone and email. On the positive side, they responded quickly to my email. They said that the problem of the gate not staying locked or getting too tight to close was not their fault because the previous owner had changed the lock. Okay, fair enough. However, they also insisted that they had hung the gate correctly -- so why isn't it hanging correctly now? (The previous owner did not do anything to adjust hanging of the gate.) Also, most surprising me, from a customer service perspective, is that they did not offer to help in any way - even for a fee. They just said (to paraphrase): "not our problem." All of our exchanges were by email and perhaps they are actually friendlier than they seemed. Emails, of course, lose all nuance and tone of voice. They came across as cold, arrogant and totally uninterested in my business. I expected much more personal and personable service from a company that boasts of being a family company in business for 40 years. They lost this potential customer. read more

Craig Fencing just finished putting up a fence for us around our backyard and we cannot imagine being more pleased with the quality of their work or the professional way in which they approached this job! Our yard is not particularly large - it is actually quite small - but our fencing needs were complicated by some longstanding property line issues. Mr. Craig (the owner) and his crew were both creative in helping us design the fence, and patient with us, as we came up with a resolution to the property line issues. Indeed, Mr. Craig made several visits to our home in advance of, and during, the construction of the fence. Even when he was not there, his crew was courteous, friendly, professional and hard-working. Moreover, the cost of the construction was reasonable and entirely consistent with the bid we received.
