"What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula?" - Timon, The Lion King…read more One of my favorite local runs! My only "Hawaiian" type of outfit is a wrap I bought years ago from the Bahamas. If it weren't for this race, I probably would have worn it twice. Now I can say I wore it at least 4 times now. Lol. As the years progress, the amount of participants increase. The course they have choose for the 5K is along walkways which are split into two way traffic areas, and still shared by pedestrians. They should make the walkways one way thus giving runners more space, and kick out the pedestrians. lol. For 2016, I believe they changed the route a bit, and even added a 10K. I remember last year, there was this lady looking for her son. I guess he was taken the night before. She was on the side asking runners if anyone has seen a little boy; it was quite the downer. Anyway, it's a fun, easy run for the whole family, and they always provide cute medals. Anything Hawaiian themed means you'll have a good time. :) TIPS -- It is alway hot, so be prepared and wear sunscreen. -- Parking can be a little tricky, so come early -- If you cannot pick up your gear at the day before at Road Runner Sports, you can pick it up on the day of the race. Shirt sizes may vary at that point. -- A timer is provided -- No gear check -- There is a "virtual" version of this race. You pay the fees, run/walk at your own leisure, and your medal and shirt will be mailed to you. -- Long Beach also has a Aloha Run! If you are that desperate, you can go to Long Beach. lol.

I don't know what compelled me to signup for this...but it felt pretty fucking awesome afterwards...now I have an addiction. This was an extremely well organized event. All the staff was friendly and very well informed. The beautiful scenic course along the San Diego Bay and Convention Center was very well organized. The Naked Cafe provided a nice breakfast at the end with eggs, sausage, whole wheat pancakes, fruit. Other freebies included Popchips, Zico Coconut Water, and Michelob Light Beer...sure beats the usual crap bagels at half-marathons! For you single guys, there are A LOT of hot girls everywhere here, and they are ripped! No skinny-fat anorexic Downtwon girls...100% pure USDA lean muscle girls. All ages...I had never seen so many Hot Moms in one area. For you ladies, same thing. Its a Man Buffet out there for you...just pick the race, age, height, and size, there is something for everyone. CHUN P VS 78 Men in the 30-34 age group: SWIM: 31st out of 78 ...and I didn't drown! :) BIKE: 42nd out of 78 RUN: 46nd out of 78 OVERALL: 46th out of 78...but 432nd out of 1200+...yeah, not impressive. I can't complain. Definitely looking forward to next years event. To those 1st timers. Don't slack on your swim training. Get plenty of time in the ocean. I did all my swimming at 24hr fitness... big mistake! My time suffered due to the current and not being able to see the buoys. I got off course a few times. The bike and run was cake! Both courses were flat and fast. Good luck!

The course and course support along with the motivational signs were great. My favorite sign? WTF? Where's the Finish? The course itself is beautiful and FLAT! With the exception of a couple of bridges, this one was awesomely flat and fast. I shaved 7 minutes of my time from Carlsbad just a month before. PR baby! I recommend it as a fast race to enjoy with 1800 other women runners. And the shirts this year were super cute and the medal? BLING!!!!

The course was relatively flat, with the exception of running up and over a bridge a few times. The starting point for the 2014 race was at Liberty Station. It takes you out and around Harbor Island. Then, you swing back and run around Shelter Island, before heading back to Liberty Station. I was so amazed by the energy and support from the other women. And from the folks watching the event? AWESOME! Great support from organizations, schools and spectators all around. Let's not forget about the medal and the glass of champagne waiting for you at the finish. Way cool! There were plenty of parking spots available for the race day event. Also, after the run, there are a number of restaurants you and your friends and family can dine at, so you can recoup the 1000+ calories you burnt off running. Two words: Coldstone Milkshake. Just sayin'. The only negative in my eyes was the expo. It wasn't anything to be impressed over. This was surprising since Competitor is the same group that does the Rock 'n Roll series, which is huge. Huge! This expo? Not so huge. Finding parking for the expo was a pain in the rear, with all the construction going on along Harbor Drive. Also, you would have had to pay for parking because the expo was located right on the Broadway Pier, west of downtown. Hopefully, next year, they'll pick a better and more accessible spot for the expo. The running shirt and the reusable bag were excellent quality, at least. Overall, this is a great race for any woman who wants to do their first half marathon in San Diego. I plan on doing this again next year. Definitely a 4 1/2 star event.

I have run this challenging race from 2007-2013 and returned again in 2019. I took a hiatus from this race in order to run other races. It has always remained a well organized race throughout the years! They always have plenty of portapotties. *Race course* The course has remained the same in all of the years that I've run it. The course is very scenic and hilly, so make sure to do your hill training! If you don't, you will suffer especially at about mile 5.5 while running up the monster hill at Torrey Pines. After you get to the top, it's mostly a downhill run to the finish at the La Jolla cove. Be sure to save something for that last climb up Prospect! *Shuttles* I've always opted for parking at the dirt parking lot at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and taking a post race shuttle back to my car after the race. The shuttles load near the corner of Coast Blvd and Ocean St. You do have the option of parking in downtown La Jolla and taking a pre-race shuttle to the starting line. I might try that option one year. *Post-race goodies* Their finisher medals have improved quite a bit since when I first ran this race. The beer garden also has beer from Ballast Point, one of favorites when I used to drink beer.

Del Mar Racetrack is a must when visiting San Diego and is such a fun experience. My friends and I usually take the Amtrak train from Orange County to Del Mar station, they have shuttles to take you from the train to the venue for free which is nice. Dress to impress as well, they have a dress code but not too many people follow it. Some people go all out with suits, dresses and fancy dress wear. Tickets are affordable and they have a variety of ticket packages to choose from, we usually sit in GA area. As for the venue itself, its beautiful from the outside and the track is well maintained. If you look from the balcony, you can see the ocean! It's pretty confusing in my opinion to navigate each floor and where to find food concessions. They need to upgrade the building and rennovate the interior. The food here isn't too good but Tanner's Prime Burgers is a must. Betting is also confusing so I would recommend looking up a Youtube vid or ask some people around the stadium on how to do it. When in doubt, hammer Fresu, Rispoli, Berrios or Hernandez!
