The wife and I were headed up I85 reading the road signs and getting past hungry. I know I shouldn't have, but my wife looked over and said, "Come on, let's give them the benefit of the doubt." So I pulled into the Cracker Barrel in Gaffney, South Carolina, already halfway prepared to be disappointed and planning my "I told you so" speech for the ride home. We were met at the door by a smiling host who sat us quicker than you can say "y'all come back now." Ann, our waitress, was at the table before I even had the menu open. She grabbed our water and coffee order and took off like she had somewhere to be, which, as it turned out, was right back at our table. We both ordered breakfast, because there are some things in life you don't overthink. Now, I dearly love country fried steak. Somewhere in the Good Book there's probably a footnote that says it's acceptable for breakfast, lunch, and supper. I was already feeling pretty good about my decision when Ann reappeared, unannounced, with a plate of hot biscuits and apple butter. No upcharge, no "would you like to add that for $3.99," just biscuits like God and Dan Evans intended. I have not had that happen in years. One bite of that apple butter and I was suddenly 20 years younger, back when Cracker Barrel was new and my cholesterol was lower and the world seemed a little less complicated. It tasted just like I remembered, which almost never happens anymore unless you're misremembering. The breakfast showed up just as I was savoring the last bite of that biscuit, and it was flat-out good. Everything was hot, everything was right, and everything was on time. No mystery substitutions, no cold eggs, no "we're out of that today." Maybe--just maybe--Cracker Barrel has remembered what made them famous in the first place: hot coffee, good food, and the kind of small kindness, like surprise biscuits and apple butter, that makes a road-weary traveler feel human again. A great breakfast dining experience. There was a small wait at the time we arrived. The hostess was nice. The shop was full of items. I enjoy browsing through their store, especially around the holidays.  Our server was nice too. She was trying her best, and I appreciated that. The breakfast at Cracker Barrel is always good to me. My only complaint is that the infamous thick, crispy edges on the pancakes were lacking. There was still a very minor thin edge, but I wish I would've received those real Cracker Barrel crispy edges on the pancakes.  From the biscuits to the hash brown casserole, everything was quite delicious. We ate here this past Friday evening around 7 o'clock. We were seated promptly and waited on promptly. Our waiter's name was Quay. More about Quay at the end of my review. I ordered the grilled chicken salad, which showed up at our table without the cucumbers and the croutons. My husband ordered meatloaf, dumplings, and green beans and we both had water and of course biscuits. I ended up putting most of my salad in the biscuit basket because it wasn't not edible. My salad consisted of mostly hard, yellow pieces. My husband said his meatloaf, dumplings, and green beans were good while I was disappointed with my salad which looked like a house salad after I had to remove the bad lettuce. The biscuits were great! The table behind us had a problem with chicken tenders, and I guess the kitchen manager came out and spoke to them. The kitchen manager came to our table to apologize about the chicken soup, but we never ordered chicken soup so she had the wrong table. I felt at this point I should not say anything about my salad because she had a lot going on . It appears quite a few people were disappointed with their food that night. As I mentioned earlier , Quay was our server and he was spot on! What a nice young man with great manners and sincere politeness to us and every table he waited on. Very accommodating and he tried to make sure everything was perfect at your table and wanted you to have a nice evening. Quay was just the best! Wow. Wow. I am normally a godly woman but after my experience here I have a few things to say that may not be the most . . . umm . . . Friendly. Where to begin. Ah, a great place, the beginning. What I thought was going to be a normal pleasant night at Cracker Barrel, turned out to be a satire before my very eyes. As I walked into the restaurant I decided to go to the bathroom, but as I turned to grab toilet paper there was none, and not only in my stall but EVERY other stall as well. Thank the lord, my mother was with me and also decided to come into the bathroom, or I would never have gotten that toilet paper, which was lying on the baby station changer in the corner! After the bathroom situation we got to our seats fairly quickly, which was nice. Our waitress came and got our drink order, and then proceeded to take our food order. The only thing left to do was wait at that point, and WAIT is what we did indeed. With an order of fried pickles as an appetizer you think that would come in fifteen minutes tops, but NO. It took an hour for our appetizer to come to the table. Within this time out table only received one refill even though most of us had water, and those who had sweet tea started off with a drink that was not so sweet but as it received its one refill it became a drink that was quite the opposite. So sugary a tooth could fall out. When our meals finally had arrived 10 minutes after the appetizer, everyone at the table examined what was supposed to be food, but within a few seconds of looking I questioned if it was even that. I will start off with a description of my meal. I ordered chicken & dumplings with meatloaf, turnip greens, and corn. The chicken and dumplings ended up being fine, but the meatloaf tasted like there was never even meat, and the turnip greens should have stayed in the can I KNOW they came out of. If you told me the corn was from my high school cafeteria, I would believe you. Moving on to the meals of the others at my table. To start off, the eggs were still runny and the sausage was still red - the last thing I want is for my food to infect me. Moving from undercooked to untouched, which is what the food was in the time we waited for it, with the meals being cold and crusted over. Thank goodness, the end. As our meal was being wrapped up, the waitresses beside us were clearly gossiping on the situation at hand as they cleaned the tables. The manager came up to our table and *laughs* made an apology, that if you blinked you would miss. With everything that has been said I would like to apologize to our waitress for the stress of this unfortunate situation, and I hope she only grows from here. To sum up, if this was a once In lifetime circumstance, or another day in that Crackerbarrels restaurant I will never know, but I know this that I must warn those who ever our considering coming here, stay sweet P.S. should have went to swig read more

Updated review - we tried again. Wait staff was pleasant and the rude weirdo that was working as a host(ess?) wasn't there. Food was brought out quick but not very warm (how does that happen?). Chicken was kind of greasy like it had been sitting under a warmer for a while (oh, that's how that happens). Waitress poured a pitcher of water on a customer beside us. Update on visit to Cracker Barrel in GaffneyS.C. : Yesterday my daughter and one grandson and myself had lunch.This placed was completely packed and very likely near the legal people capacity allowed! Nevertheless; this store was completely stocked! Even though customers were grabbing and purchasing items like they would at a fire sale! Store associates were restocking the shelves right behind them. I found it amazing that this store had so much reserve stock in their backroom! I took a peek back there and saw that it was fully loaded with merchandise. These folks are fully prepared for the already occurring holiday rush! Very impressive: My Kudos to you! I found it equally impressive that they actually had enough people to achieve all of this! We had a really great lunch and the lady who tended to us was Super! After we dined; I stopped our waitress and gave her Twenty dollar tip! She thought that I wanted her to to get me some change. I told her Merry Christmas this is for you! Great job lady! I avoid restaurants that require a tip by the percentage of the bill or the number of people served in a party. I like to determine if my server is on their game ; or not! Regardless; the very least tip that I'll leave is 10 percent of the total. I prefer to award excellent service wit a tip in the range of 30 or 40 percent. It's important to remember that the service people who attend to us make considerably less than minimum wage and survive on tips! I've personally witnessed a group of four to six eat at various restaurants, get great attention to their needs and wants; get up to leave and leave a two dollar tip on their table. Twice I've seen a waitress pick two bucks and look so sad thinking their best wasn't good enough to be rewarded . I've twice gotten up from my seat and handed each girl a five dollar bill out of my own pocket and told that I had observed their work and that had done a fantastic job! It really gets under my skin when Cheap- Skates do that! It angers me! If you can afford to dine out; you can afford to leave an adequate tip! I went last night for dinner. I ordered the fried chicken with the bone. My server, Amalani, was pleasant. My chicken tasted good but was not up to temperature. My baked potato & carrots were good. I got the beignet to go for my birthday dessert to go. I got home & they gave me maple syrup. Any other Cracker Barrel they give me a pecan caramel sauce. I called & they said it's like a syrup. Service has really improved at Crack Barrel. Service used to be horrible at Cracker Barrel in terms of long waits. About six months, several stores in the area started using tablets and there has been an amazing improvement in wait times and service. From what I can tell, not across the board yet but working in that direction. That said, our Florida Vacation kind of got messed up by Hurricane Matthew and we ended up leaving Central Florida two days early and detouring through Alabama to get back to the Carolina's. The storm forced evacuees to move as much as 200 miles inland to get out of the way of the storm. We were almost back to the North Carolina and it was raining and we decided to stop for dinner. Cracker Barrel was not out first or second choice but the other two restaurants had 40 minute waits and with that, we could have almost been home. We walked into Cracker Barrel and they were very busy but when I wife walked up to the hostess station, we were immediately seated. Apparently this was one of the stores that had moved to the tablets. Our server was there in a few minutes and took our beverage order and presented us with our menu's. I chose the Prime Rib French Dip with Fries on the side. Since my wife had decided she did not want a full meal and had been wanting to try the Apple Dumpling, she got to go ahead and try that. Both of us enjoyed our meals with the downside being the fries were very much under cooked. Interesting even occurred after we got our check. I just glanced at it to calculate the tip. My wife went up to pay at the front while I looked around the store. She's walking away from the counter when the woman behind the counter started calling out to her to come back. My wife is hard or hearing so I asked the cashier what she needed. She said my wife had left without paying for the Apple Dumpling. I pointed out that she had paid the amount on the check and the cashier pointed out the Apple Dumpling had been left off. Maybe if I had checked the check closer I would have caught it but I did not. In any case, this was a just and due debt and we were not trying to shortchange the store so I went ahead and paid the balance. No big deal but I wonder how the cashier knew that the Apple Dumpling had been omitted on our bill. Interesting paradox and probably tied to the use of tablets as well. read more

Sad Days for this Gaffney location. Food was cold upon its arrival to the table eggs were sparse and apparently there's a shortage of cheese and at least at the Cracker Barrel. Biscuits were ice cold as everything else was two thumbs down to my $30 breakfast for two! I have raised my one star review to a two star review as they reached out to me and I appreciate the concern. I will See what happens and consider trying the restaurant again to get another review that will be truthful as always and hopefully much better. Thank you again for reaching out to me! Most Cracker Barrels are located immediately off the Interstate which makes them supremely easy to access if you're driving something bigger than a regular car. This one is a few turns off the highway and so that may be something you should take into consideration if you're driving an RV or a trailer. Located next to the Gaffney Outlet Mall, this is the perfect spot to stop and carb up before or after your shop. And just like every other CB I've been to, it's the same shop of trinkets and such, the same menu, and the same formula food. Which isn't bad . If you know what you like, then CB is the place for you. 15 minutes from parking lot to breakfast for me today. Uncle Hershel's Favorite with a grilled pork chop (I think the ham, bacon and the sausage is too salty) with hashbrown casserole, two poached eggs, grits and gravy. Waiting here for our food for over an hour. They were out of French toast, but would not substitute a pancake. This place is just ok for me. I do love cracker barrel but everytime I come here I noticed a order is messed up! We came on a friday around 11am so they really weren't that busy. We got sat and waited about 8-10 mins before anyone greeted us! We gave our order when finally someone came and got our drink order. My husband asked what the veggie of the day was and the server said he didn't know because he literally just walked in the door. What?? I guess that's why we waited so long to be greeted. Why sit us in a section with no server? I ordered the catfish dinner (spicy grilled). When our food came out, it was fried! Someone in our group ordered hash browns and didn't get it. The food runner that served our food knew about this and didn't tell anyone. My food never came out and neither did the hash browns. It was only until our server came up and gave us drink refills we had to tell him. He came out quickly with the hashbrowns but he said my food was going to be another 4 mins. We already waited about 8 mins before he came up to us. By the time I got my food everyone was already done eating. Last time I came here I ordered dumplings and they said they were out of it. What can I say, if you've been in one Cracker Barrel you've pretty much been in them all. Stopped in on a cross-country drive with my daughter and her boyfriend. We beat the lunch rush on a Saturday and were seated promptly. Food is relatively inexpensive and consistent. I got a cheese hashbrown casserole dish (the waitress told me upfront it's small) plus fried okra. I'm used to them bringing jams with the biscuits and cornbread but we had to ask or them. Also, they brought the breads with our meals this time instead of bringing them first. Definitely prefer the biscuits to the cornbread, which can be dry and crumbly at times. Location is a little tricky off the highway, but just follow the signs. read more

My friend and I went to the restaurant despite the (at the time) 3 star review. However, we received service that was less than 3 stars. The only redeeming quality about the restaurant was the hostess. She alone receives a 5 star rating. The rest of the experience deserves a 1 star rating. The waitress had no interest in her job and blatantly lied about not having products in stock. She also argued with us about the menu (we simply asked for what was literally printed on the menu) and she did not write down the milk allergy when she was told about it. She simply gave off an air of not caring and that she was above it all. She was not hospitable at all. The check out service was simply slow and awkward ending the night in not a good way. Unfortunately we had hoped to find that the reviews had been slightly dishonest but, having experienced the restaurant, they are completely accurate. Oh, and they were out of roast beef at dinner time. The customer service is better at Wendy's. Best go there over this place. read more

I was dubious at first with this place. Cracker Barrel's can be hit or miss. Usually, it's a solid single with a fighting chance for a double (baseball y'all). Sometimes you bunt a fly ball for strike three, sometimes you get a shoot-the-gap triple. Rarely are you hitting slammies out of the park or getting hit by a pitch. That's fine with me. We got here at 11:15 on a Saturday. It was busy but not slammed. I let a lot of things slide in life. I'm a very easy going guy. When I'm amped up, I'm at a 7, and when I'm dragging ass, I'm at a 5: very even keeled. I do have some pet peeves that send me from a 5 right up the charts to a 7. I experienced one of those here. My family of four got here and we put our name in for six. My parents were meeting us: ETA 15 minutes. The hostess said she would take my name but I would need to check-in when all of the party is present. She asked if everyone was present and I, doing my WWJD thang, and said "no". She said it would then be a 10 minute wait after checking in. What to do? Do I approach in five minutes and say our complete party is here so we get a head start? What if she calls our name in five minutes and we are still short? Do I wait the requested 15 minutes to check-in, and then wait 15 more for a table? 1) I don't like this policy. I know why it is in place, but I don't like it. 2) as hungry as I am, "I can't lie". I split the difference and waited about 7.5 minutes before entering my name for the raffle: Grand Prize- a no expenses paid trip to a corner table with all the fixins' you can stand. We were seated almost exactly as the fold walked in the door. Existential crisis averted. We had to wait a while for the gal to serve us but she was spot on after that. Very friendly. Since my parents were paying I decide to go all out with the smokehouse breakfast and a side of three pancakes. The pancakes were a little under par but passable. Yes, this review claimed about five sentences of restaurant germane info. But how many times can you say the same thing about a 2000 chain restaurant? Added hash brown casserole as substitute, asked for plastic utensils and was told in the bag. Ask for napkins, told in the bag. Left the store and when we pulled everything out to eat...no plastic ware, no napkins! No real pleased with this store at all and no plans to return. There's usually a long wait for this location, but they got us in quickly! The food was pretty good. I got the chicken friend chicken which was a little burned, but my eggs, fried apples, grits, and biscuit that came with the meal was amazing. We also got the fresh fruit parfaits because we love them from here! They always do it with the fresh fruit of the day, so sometimes the flavor is a surprise. We usually stop at a Cracker Barrel on our long road trips. The one this weekend was no exception. As we made our way to the host/hostess station, we noticed NONE of the patrons were wearing masks. The staff all had masks, but no one else did. The thought of waiting 25-30 minutes in this giant virus incubator caused us to leave in search of another restaurant. Just 10 minutes down the road was another Cracker Barrel where everyone was wearing a mask. We had a wonderful meal there without the worry we had at this location. We stopped at this location while traveling to NC from GA. We had a limited amount of time, and we were able to get in and out in less than an hour! Worst food at a Cracker Barrel. EVER. The baby carrots were watery, mushy and nearly tasteless, the chicken and dumplings shared the lack of seasons along with small portion size, or let's put it this way a correct amount of undercooked dumplings, runny watery gravy and almost no chicken. The highlight of the meal was the hash brown casserole and it was also not cooked properly. The tiny biscuits were ok but the corn muffins looked like misshapen hockey pucks. Coffee tasted like they ran the grounds twice, yes you could read through it. While I will dine at Cracker Barrel again I will not eat at this location ever again. On a side note we did tell our cashier about our experience in response to her question " how was everything " her suggestion "why didn't you get them to bring you more" ARE YOU SERIOUS! Why in heavens name would I get MORE bad food and crappy coffee. The service was flawless despite the fact we waited quite some time for our food. I came to pick my dinner up tonight, I didn't mind the wait they were quite busy, what I did mind was my food. I ordered the Friday fish special, I only live about a mile from the restaurant, my fish was cold, heavily breaded, and my baked potato was brown and cold as well. My dinner consisted of two delicious biscuits and cold slaw. I wondered if it's because my dinner was take out, or had it been sitting for a long time in the kitchen after been cooked. The young man inquired twice to see if it was ready. I'm not saying I won't eat there again but it will be a long time. I really, really hate ordering to-go food and getting all the way home and my order not being correct. Especially when I did an online order. There was no miscommunication from doing a phone order. You just need to be competent enough to read the paper and make sure it's all in the bag. It really isn't that difficult of a task but here I am without all of my food. I also really love getting a half full plate (will attach photo-yes it is a kids meal-a pathetic one) missing half the food and the drink and I am trying to figure out why I was charged $6 for maybe $1 worth of food. It's Cracker Barrel, what do you want? Well, I'll tell you what you should want, Campfire Chicken! That's what! By far, I mean by 500 miles far, the best thing they've ever introduced on the menu (that I just so happened to witness). $8.99 for 1/2 a chicken roasted to perfection (though a bit heavy on the salt), an ear of corn, 4 sticks of carrots, 2 potatoes, and some tomatoes and onions. If this is some healthy campaign they're launching, it's a home run. Hostess said, let me wipe that water, grabbed the nastiest rag I've ever seen and went to town. I said the the table wasn't cleaned. She apparently believed that rag with no cleaner did the job.
