As an older (female) white belt, they customized their instruction to meet my needs: challenge but not overwhelm. My priority was to train safely but also have fun. The BJJ HIIT trainings at lunch and evenings are awesome workouts, they put you in scenarios (for example 50 seconds left, start in half guard, top guy is down on points and needs to pass or sub to win) and run through that for several rounds with different partners, 10 second breaks. I typically burn 500-600 calories in the 50 minute class.

Went to Mick Doyle's for a free first class based off the recommendation of a current member…read more On the advice of an employee, the hubs and I took both the beginner and intermediate boxing classes. The beginner class was more of a warmup that focused on footwork and technique and the intermediate class moved into hitting and bag work. While the trainers and workout was fantastic, about 45 minutes of the two hours was taken up by the trainer talking (no movement during this time) and one-on-one work with the first trainer. The one-on-one time was great, however, if you were not working with the trainer you were just standing around. It seems this time would be more beneficial if people were paired up to continue training while waiting for their turn with the trainer. If you are looking for a workout, you may want to just attend the beginner class. If you are looking to become more efficient and trained in boxing, both classes are probably needed. The intermediate class (at least during our visit) is just a continuation of the first class and cannot stand on its own. While the extended time was a let down, as newbies we definitely needed the break. If we were to continue on, this would probably be an issue if all classes have this amount of down time. Tikan Ju-Jitsu is a local dojo which holds classes at three locations (Southwest and Maple YMCA, and Lifetime Fitness). I started taken Ju-Jitsu with my stepdaughter, who ended up deciding it wasn't for her but I ended up staying. As an adult doing this for the first time, I can't say that my body was ready to fly through the air, but the sensei has always been very patient in showing things to me multiple times and is wonderful and explaining and demonstrating different moves and how they relate to real life situations and can be expanded upon based on your level. Classes are an hour long, and typically start with 10-15 minutes of stretching and warmup, followed by skill practice. A lot of time is spent reviewing basics, and then breaking into smaller groups based on experience. You learn strikes, kicks, rolls, breakfalls (how to safely fall), locks and breaks, and more. The class is heavily interactive and there isn't a lot of down time. It's great exercise and a lot of fun and If highly recommend giving it a try!
