I spent three nights at the Residence Inn Memphis Downtown, and I must say, this property left me…read morewith mixed feelings. Let's start with my arrival, because getting INTO the hotel was an experience of its own. LOL. The lobby doors were locked, so I pressed the buzzer. No response. Thinking I might have approached the wrong entrance, I walked around to the Starbucks entrance. LOCKED TOO! Eventually, I managed to get inside. Once I made it in, things started looking up. The building has some beautiful architectural character, and both the bellhop and front desk representative were extremely personable and welcoming. Now, let's talk about my ROOM! I stayed in a loft on the sixth floor, and I absolutely LOVED the layout. The space was impressive, thoughtfully designed, and made excellent use of every square foot. Definitely one of the highlights of my stay. HOWEVER, there was one issue I simply couldn't ignore. THE SMELL! There was a persistent, unidentifiable odor throughout the sixth floor and inside my room. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Was it mildew? Mold? Or perhaps another guest cooking up an international feast that had the entire floor smelling like their kitchen? WHO KNOWS! Whatever it was, it wasn't pleasant. I eventually got used to it, but every time I stepped off the elevator or returned to my room, there it was again. And then there's BREAKFAST. BABY, WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! I've stayed at my fair share of Residence Inn properties, and this was easily the worst breakfast experience I've had at one. First, the breakfast area was extremely small and constantly congested. Trying to navigate the space while everyone was attempting to grab breakfast was an experience in itself. The selection was limited, and the food lacked flavor. Honestly, some of it was borderline inedible. The only saving graces were the prepackaged items and the waffles I made myself using the waffle maker. At least I could count on those! LOL. For a property carrying the Marriott name, I expected a little more, especially considering my experiences at other Residence Inn locations. Overall, I genuinely liked the property. The architecture, welcoming staff, and impressive loft were definite highlights. However, the unpleasant odor, disappointing breakfast, and difficulty accessing the building certainly took away from what could have been a much better experience. Would I stay here again? Possibly. But I'd definitely have some questions about that sixth floor before booking another room. And next time, I might just plan on getting breakfast somewhere else!

At only using 4,500 Hyatt points to stay, the Hyatt Place Memphis/Wolfchase Galleria ended up being…read morea real value for points used. My wife and I were continuing our road trip through the upper Midwest near the Mississippi River, and I had reserved a stay at this Memphis location of Hyatt Place, near the East side of town. This was convenient since we were planning to go to Louisville the next morning. We got to the hotel around 6 pm, finding easy free parking in the big surface lot, and our room was ready. The hotel has 126 rooms with 6 floors. It seems that the double queen rooms are more readily available when using points. This room also had a couch as well. The room had a small wet bar with mini fridge and coffee maker (which I used the hot water feature to make tea). Everything in the room worked well. The hotel has a small bar/restaurant called the Placery which we did not use. We did use the complementary breakfast, however, and it was the best one we had during our trip. It was the typical Hyatt Place set-up of the other places that we visited, with the same items. But everything was constantly filled and actually looked pleasing to the eye. The four hot items were french toast sticks, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, and pork sausage...all in large quantities. They also had tortillas and plenty of salsa. The only small negative was that was no fresh waffle maker or pancakes. But for me, having the ability to create your own breakfast burrito made up for it.

Their WIFI works well, breakfast is reasonable. 1) They service your room every other day, and they do not tell you that when you check in. You have to sign a bunch of paperwork upon check-in. They have a gated parking lot which was nice. Especially having a pet to have to take on potty breaks. The parking lot and pet relief areas were well lit. The room was decent. The set-up was a bit weird. The sink was out in the front of the room as you walk in, and then the bathroom (toilet and shower) were a boxed room in the center of the room. The door to the bathroom was on the side of the bedroom and you had to keep the door shut if you wanted to watch television. You had to walk around the bathroom wall and across the room to wash your hands and use the sink. It was extremely odd. You would think at least that the door would be on the opposite side and lead out to the separate sink. The hotel was busy and the volume of people was loud. People leaving and slamming doors all night long kept me up and had my dog on high alert all night. It was not the best night of sleep. Their breakfast was fantastic though. They offered pancakes, waffles, instant oatmeal, eggs, potatoes, bicuits and gravy, yogurt and some other pastry type items. There is an indoor pool and I even saw ping pong although I did not travel down to look in that room. The fitness center was small but nice and looked clean.

I called the hotel directly, spoke to a staff member (Puvi or Pruvi), and was told I had to cancel through Expedia, which I did immediately. Despite canceling in good faith and never using the room, the hotel refused the refund. Worse, the front desk staff was evasive, refused to give his name at first, and then asked for my name so he could "report me" -- even though he already had my info and I was respectful the entire time. I've filed formal complaints with both Choice Hotels and Expedia. This experience was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. I would not recommend this location based on how poorly I was treated while trying to handle a simple cancellation properly and politely.

The place was safe, convenient to the interstate and an outlet mall, and a very good price. With all fees, it was $71.50 for a week night stay. This is best for someone who just needs to stay a night, two at most, and don't plan to stay in their room a lot. As for parking, the lot would be fine if everyone just had sedans. When I arrived there, a lot of people were overcompensating with huge pickups. So I ended up parking in a neighboring lot until a spot opened up. By the morning, there were plenty of open spots. One other thing I will mention as a negative is that the doors are a bit loud if you're a light sleeper. So keep that in mind when you're trying to make a decision. I will say that a was surprised that they actually had a continental style breakfast. It wasn't a whole lot - cereal and some bite sized cakes, but most places at this price point have at most stale coffee. Staff there seemed nice, no problems there. TLDR; it's an okay and safe place to grab a few hrs of sleep. Just keep your expectations low
