    Free popcorn!

Ever wanted to watch films in an outdoor setting, where you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the breeze under the moonlit night, and it's free? Look no further than the Courtyard Cinema held at the Ward Village Courtyard at the former IBM Building. Every month on the 2nd Thursday, from 6pm- 9pm, you can watch a free film shown that night. Check out the website at www.wardvillage.com for Courtyard Cinema schedule and film showing. Remember, even though it's free, you still have to register online by entering your name , email address, and how many people are going. Go to the Eventbrite website, or the Ward Village website to click on the RSVP button and it brings you to the Eventbrite page. Once you click the RSVP button, enter your information, and they get your request, an email is sent with your ticket. Print out the ticket, or add on via mobile to Apple Wallet or Google Play for your iPhone or Android device. You need to bring the ticket so they can scan you for entry, and they put a wristband around you so you have in/out privileges that night. Doors open at 6pm, movie starts somewhere between 6:45pm-7pm. Usually by 5:30pm, there's already a line of people waiting to get in, but no worries, you can arrive a litte after 6pm if you're not one of those types that want frow row seats or something. There's always a food truck in front near the entrance that rotates every month, and once you enter, grab a bag or two of free popcorn. Also, no worries here about trying to sneak in food and drinks, cause you're allowed to bring in your own goodies to munch on. Of course, you can always check out a variety of eateries out in the Ward Village area from Ward Center, South Shore Market, or Ward Entertainment Center. Bring a jacket and blanket for those cold, chilly days, and parking is so convenient, since you can park in any of the structures in the Ward Village area. Of course, no worries about restrooms either if you need to relieve yourself. So, if you don't have anything planned, come out and watch a film for your viewing enjoyment!

Tuesdays is the bargain day, all movies are $11 bux. I just went and saw the Japansese 3 hr flick, Kokuho....cinematic historical JP drama. Movie is long, but the seats that come with their own swinging tray and the ability to recline, with a leg rest, allows one to just sit back and relax....however, I am digressing. I was so relaxed after the movie ended and the credits rolled, I walked out and left my phone on the tray. 5 mins passed before I realized, walked back, and phone was gone. Checked with management and had been placed into safe keeping in the theater office. Two great employees, both males, probably in the early twenties assisted me,.....it was 3 pm -ish on 2/24/26, so mgr should be able to pin them down, and sent a massive " thank you" from this spaced out patron. The movie was fantastic, chairs comfy, the two employees.....priceless.

I do think it's worth it on Tuesday (because of the 11 dollar tickets). I went last Tuesday to see forbidden fruits, and unlike the last time I went (to see Black Phone 2) there weren't any flies, no stinky peepee smell, and my seat was not completely peeling off. It was still a little stinky, but I'd just wear a sweater/hoodie and pray there aren't any bed bugs coming home with you. I enjoyed myself! I'd still rather go to Kahala tho.

Place is AWESOME!!! I totally forgot about this location for events too! Shoots!…read more They can hold over 300 people sitting side by side for a screening, move or even music or dancing. But they can also rearrange a sitting arrangement so there is open areas for people to stand and mingle. Then they have the lounge area. That's our favorite! The couches are enormous and the set up is immaculate! They had floor walkers and escorts who helped everyone find seats or direct them where to go. That's as a good thing. Usually m, people have to figure out what to do or where to go at these events, no?! Lol. But this was a once in a lifetime experience for us and it was AWESOME! Of course my son didn't want to watch himself on screen, but, we all loved it! He did well. In fact, they ALL DID! Every single film was done excellent! I wish we could've stayed for the whole thing, but unfortunately we had to leave early because the kids had school the next day. So we left around 9pm. Maybe next time we'll have a better chance in watching our son on screen again. Soon! For sure... Ok that's about it! OH! And the restroom! Oh my... it's an experience to have. Lol! It's amazing! One door for ALL to enter. Then as you pass the main door, your in the lobby of the restroom. Like they have in fancy theaters or auditoriums or hotels. Yup! Only difference is, there's no seats or chairs to lounge on. There's a long marble counter top with about 5 individual sinks. Each side accessible for anyone to wash up. Mirrors along the wall. And then the MENS DOOR for their restroom is on the left and the WOMENS on the right. Ever the bathroom stalls were cozy. Toilet seats were nice and comfy, not those public restroom toilets. But the hotel kine. Just without the extra fancy buttons. It's definitely somewhere anyone should go and see. Especially when they host an event there. OK NOW IM DONE! Thanks for reading! This Courtyard is like a chameleon!…read more It becomes an outdoor ice Skating Rink in the Hawaiian "winter"; changes into a open-air movie theater on the second Thursday of the month when the weather is warmer; and converts to a concert venue on the third Wednesday of the month during the spring, summer, and autumn. At other times, people enjoy this space as a Yoga studio/art gallery. Ward Village makes really good use of this area. Chairs are set up for the movies and concerts. A gigantic tent is erected when the weather is suggesting rain. Otherwise, the audience enjoys gentle trade winds, silhouettes of palm trees, and views of fluffy clouds, gorgeous sunsets, and sometimes... the silvery moon. There's a water feature on the far side of the courtyard, so if the sound bothers you, sit nearer to the entrance and away from the wall. Most events are free - just look for the community events online and print out your tickets! If the event you're interested in is a Brunch, the fee will be posted an you'll get a chance to try specialties of local restaurants, using a ticket system. There's ample free parking nearby and a beautiful, clean restroom on the ground floor of the "IBM Building". The co-ed sinks are a great idea for efficient use of this facility! Check it out!!!

OVERALL SATISTFACTION: 10 of 10. 5 of 5 stars, Na ka…read moreoi...simply da bes! Keeping in mind that 1. I love live music, theater and big screen films. And 2. I haven't resided in the islands since the mid-90s. With that said, I have been here for several shows and I purposely flown in for some and other were just the lowest of consolation prizes for having to fly away from loved ones due to my job taking me to another "twist my arm" experience = Stay on Oahu. I joke of course, but in earnest, growing up with the lights of Broadway and hundreds of concert venues nearby, I take my theater experiences very seriously and the Hawaii Theater meets any and every want/need one could dream of. For me it exceeds most. Please allow me to define... MY EXPERIENCES: I have been to a Christmas show, on my birthday, featuring Amy Hanaiali'i and, the much beloved and missed, Willie K (R.I.P.), which included a wonderful meet and greet. On another visit to HNL I just happened to be around for a Beach Boys show and was fortunate enough to get a ticket for it. And most recently, I flew in for a showing of The Princess Bride which featured a meet and greet of Cary Elwes. AT THE TOP: The President of the Hawaii Theater, Gregory Dunn is super humble, very polite and amazingly professional in every aspect. Best of all, he gets involved in the pre-show activities be it guiding folks to where they need to be or ensuring we understand the process of a meet and greet. Ya gotta love when there is no job below those in charge. He sets an example that many could benefit from if their eyes are truly open. SECURITY: If you have been to downtown Honolulu, you know it hasn't been a place that gets touted around the globe for it's cleanliness or safety. HPD has had their hands full over the years. Stores may have closed and some issues still exist, but overall I feel that the area has been improving greatly and adding to the return of a safer feeling neighborhood is the Hawaii Theater's security team. Yes, they are the most amazing group of people that one could want to see at an event. These guys are the, literally, the muscle that keeps things in order and flowing, from bag checks to ensuring reentry folks have wristbands. They operate like a finely tuned engine. As a concert goer that has been to well over 500 shows globally, I recognize these folks as the best. I will even go as far as to say that actually recognize some of them since my last visit a couole years back, which means that the team is sticking together. With that stated, not once have I had any safety concerns with these guys on duty... and still downtown can be questionable at times. STAFF OF THE THEATER: From the box office staff to those assigned to scan your tickets and give out VIP wristbands, these folks know how to keep the lines moving. Once inside there are strategically placed individuals, as one would expect. Folks there to give you direction to restrooms or concessions and then you have the ushers, those folks who are much more than a uniformed someone with a flashlight who is unfamiliar with the venue layout. These folks are amazing, they will get you to your seat in a timely, professional manner. Last but not least, are the bartenders... the fashionable, handlebar mustachioed bartender I met a few shows back was here again... and I always find him to be a terrific conversationalist (when time allots), incredibly professional and truly represents the venue as best as any one could. Put all these compliments together under one roof and you get one of the best theater experiences you could hope to ever find. You should come to downtown and find out for yourself... and you'll be a repeat offender, like me, (END NOTE: I fly in from the mainland for touring shows I could easily opt to catch on the mainland, and for a cheaper overall hit to the wallet. The Hawaii Theater, as defined above, is truly the deciding factor).

Walking into the Hawai'i Theatre, you're instantly transported into another era. An era of soft…read moreelegance and timeless artistry. From the moment you pass through the doors, you're surrounded by a blend of old-world elegance and Hawaiian warmth. Built in 1922, the theatre has hosted everything from silent films and Broadway plays to concerts and Hula performances. Today it seats about 1,400 guests, offering an intimate experience where every seat feels close to the stage. The acoustics are excellent, the seats are comfortable, and the staff and volunteers are friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. There's also a small bar and lounge with high-tops, perfect for enjoying a drink and conversation before the show. Inside the theater, you see tall, fluted Corinthian-style columns that are richly detailed. The curved arch overhead is decorated with mosaic-style tiles in warm tones, and I absolutely LOVE the lush deep red velvet curtains that frame the stage. They add so much warmth and elegance. Having attended many shows throughout the years, I've always been mesmerized by the mural above the stage and decided to do some Googling while waiting for the show to begin. I learned it's Lionel Walden's Glorification of the Drama. The painting depicts a grand procession of mythic figures -- a golden-robed muse in her chariot, attendants, musicians, a lion handler -- all celebrating the power of theater. The central figure, often interpreted as the Personification of Drama, leads the way. Knowing that part of the mural was once lost to water damage and later painstakingly restored makes it even more meaningful. Parking is easy at the municipal garage on Bethel Street, just a block away. The short walk is now well-lit, a welcome improvement from years past when it was dark and sketchy. Entertaining audiences for over 100 years, the Hawaii Theater is a recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Attending a show here, you're not just watching a performance, you're also living and breathing a beautiful piece of Hawaii's historic culture.
