Second to saying yes, hiring the Duchess of Denver was the best wedding decision we made! From…read morespending hours truly getting to know us, to having all the right connections, to gracefully navigating a weather pivot on our wedding day, Alex surpassed every expectation. My husband and I knew we wanted to create a unique, beautiful wedding experience that we, our family and friends would cherish and remember. We'd wanted elements of a traditional wedding weekend but one that felt fun and not like every other wedding we'd been to. We also knew that, as a busy engineer and lawyer, we had very little knowledge about what goes into a great wedding and very little time or desire to learn the intricacies of "the perfect wedding." Alex spent hours asking probing and fun questions. He really got to know our visions, desires and quirks. There were so many times when we said things like "we want a dinner the night before, but not a typical rehearsal reception with people standing around at hightop in a bland conference room." He absorbed all of it and turned it into a fabulous weekend. Alex's encyclopedic knowledge about James and Rebecca was invaluable when my work got super crazy a few months before the wedding. When I told Alex that I could do big decisions, but the little ones, like choosing ribbon color or envelopes for invitations, were hurting my brain, Alex stepped in and planned everything based on what he knew about us. Alex found us a breathtaking space in the Penrose Room at the Broadmoor, he coordinated flowers to match my colorful dress, helped pick perfect delicious meal stations that suited a variety of dietary needs, organized the music and stayed on top of the hotel until their 3,000 square foot Parker suite opened up. Alex interviewed and found the best make-up artist, designed hand calligraphed journals for our guests, and created guest bags that with fun and useful things. I could go on and on! Alex's management of every detail meant the weekend ran smoothly and everyone was happy! He created a bowling night for our out-of-town guests and wedding party, worked with the hotel make sure family members with friction had rooms far away from each other, stocked our bride and groom suite with snacks and champagne, moved us us through the precise schedule of photos, ceremony and reception, and organized a fun and delicious good-bye brunch. When a surprisingly rainy June meant our outdoor ceremony space was a mud-field, Alex pivoted and redesigned a large alcove in the reception space to be a cozy ceremony space. So many of our friends and family have said that ours was one of the best weddings they'd ever attended. Ok, ok, maybe they have to say that, but in this case, I think it's probably true! We would recommend Alex to any couple, especially successful professionals who want to create a first class, memorable experience (but might now have the first clue of how do to it).

Communication with the sales and planning team was poor, with hidden fees and add-ons that made planning stressful they will tell you one thing then do another. The day-of coordinator was rude and unprofessional, making inappropriate comments and failing to follow through on promises. The event captain and DJ were disorganized, mispronounced me- The BRIDE's name, and didn't announce key details like the dessert bar, glow sticks, or dance props. The food was cold and underwhelming, and the bathrooms and indoor areas were poorly maintained, with noticeable sewer smells and worn stairways. Overall, the venue, staff, and vendors associated with The Pines did not meet expectations at all. Aside from the pretty outdoor space and attentive bartenders, I cannot recommend this venue or any Wedgewood property.

During our initial interview with The Pines, I was very clear about these expectations, and their team assured us they could meet every one of them. Based on those assurances, we decided to book the venue. However, several months later, when it came time to plan the event, I learned that many of the elements I had discussed and confirmed prior to booking were suddenly "not possible." The salesperson who originally booked our event was no longer employed there, and I had to repeatedly ask why these promises could not be fulfilled. It felt as though the team had simply agreed to everything initially in order to make the sale. Eventually, after several conversations, The Pines did reverse course on some of these issues and were able to accommodate most of my requests. Unfortunately, the experience was marred by unprofessional behavior from our assigned wedding planner, who reportedly told my son and son-in-law that my daughter and I were "too intense" and that she "got stuck" working with us. That level of unprofessionalism is completely unacceptable and deeply disappointing, especially given the importance of the event and the significant investment we made. Would not recommend.

We selected the separate cabin in the meadow for our two day stay. Initial appearance was exciting but once we occupied unit we found how lacking it was. It is billed as small and intimate but we found the place "just" dirty and tried to overlook it. Clean towels and sheets were provided. Screen door did not fit so bugs, gnats, flies and moths inside. Had a King bed but for us the mattress was too soft. Very low toilet and small shower. Hot tub in room puts off odor and cycles throughout the day - meaning it comes on 2-3 times at night in a very quiet setting. Local water tasted and smelled terrible...so bring bottled water (some provided). Two FOLDING chairs provided for deck which needs upkeep badly. When we arrived we had no clue where to go for check in. - which door? 9am breakfast is too late for us and was ok. Visiting with other guests always a plus. The Elk in the meadow was a real plus too.

The bride and groom had their own cabin in the meadow -- so romantic! What a charming place! My husband and I stayed in the Colorado Sun room, which had so many amenities: a kitchenette, private hot tub, double-sided fireplace, two-person shower, and even a sauna! The whole B&B had just a ton of history and character. The furnishings were all super comfortable, with a relaxed, rustic vibe. A few things needed some updating and fixing, though. There was no hot water from the kitchen sink of our room because the little under-sink water heater was broken. One of the baseboards had come lose in the bathroom and there was tons of mold on the drywall. The water up there is well water, and it was incredibly soft; hard to wash the shampoo out of your hair, and it tasted NASTY. Definitely consider bringing your own bottled drinking water if you're going to stay a few days. The breakfast part of the bed and breakfast was pretty good. Two of the staff came up each morning to cook and serve hearty potatoes, sausage, eggs, fruit salad, coffee, orange juice, etc. It wasn't particularly good, but it was nice to have a hot, served meal that wasn't pizza delivery. We ate breakfast outside, where the bees were a nuisance because they wanted all of our food. We had just a fantastic weekend up here! Definitely the best wedding I've ever been to. I would highly recommend Meadow Creek for events of all kinds, but especially if you want to rent out the whole place.

Unfortunately, from start to finish, our experience was extremely disappointing and stressful. Communication was poor from the very beginning. Over the course of planning our wedding, we were assigned five different day-of coordinators due to constant staff changes. Then, just three weeks before our wedding, we received an email stating that the venue had changed ownership yet again. We were introduced to Keisha, the new manager and point of contact, who assured us that things would be handled differently and that we'd be well taken care of. Sadly, that couldn't have been further from the truth. Only two weeks before our wedding, we were told that they couldn't locate our signed contract. When we checked the digital link where our contract had been stored, it showed that it had been deleted. We were then asked to sign a new contract -- but this new version included multiple price increases, including higher rental fees. Despite having several emails proving our original agreement, the venue insisted we sign the new contract. Even during that renegotiation process, Keisha repeatedly forgot to include key details we had already agreed upon. If it hadn't been for our day-of coordinator carefully reviewing the revised contract, several important elements would have been missed entirely. That kind of carelessness just added to the stress and uncertainty we were already facing. When my husband (then fiancé) spoke with Keisha by phone to calmly address these issues, she raised her voice and continuously spoke over him like a child throwing a temper tantrum- behavior that was unprofessional and completely unacceptable, especially just two weeks before our wedding. The entire ordeal caused tremendous stress in what should have been one of the happiest times of our lives. To make matters worse, they wanted to charge us an additional $800 -- $400 per hour -- simply to arrive early enough to get ready at the venue. As a result, we were rushed on the day of the wedding. My hair and makeup team struggled to finish in time, and my husband ended up helping set up just hours before guests arrived -- something no couple should have to experience on their wedding day. To be fair, our day-of coordinator, Brooke from Grace & Co., was absolutely wonderful. She went above and beyond to make the day run smoothly and was the only reason things came together at all. However, she does not work for Villa Parker -- she was contracted separately, and her professionalism stood in stark contrast to the venue's management. As a Colorado native, I had always dreamed of having my wedding at Villa Parker. It was once owned by a couple who truly cared about making each event magical, but sadly, under the new ownership, that warmth, integrity, and attention to detail are completely gone. Even after our wedding, when we returned to pick up our items, the project manager saw us and didn't even acknowledge us -- not a word, not a smile, nothing. It breaks my heart to say this, but I would strongly discourage anyone from booking Villa Parker under its current ownership. The venue itself may be beautiful, but the management and treatment of clients are deeply disappointing. I hope in time they rediscover the excellence and care that once made this venue so special.

Lo and behold, Tab Benoit (a terrific blues singer and guitarist) was performing Saturday night! Although it appeared sold out, we lucked into 6th row, just off center (on the aisle). At just under $70/ticket it was reasonable. Tab and his bandmates (drummer and bassist) put on a nonstop 90 minute show that really highlighted Tab's extraordinary guitar playing. He also crooned a few ballads in his signature raspy voice (though not enough in our opinion)! In terms of living/performing blues artists, Tab is among the elite. Checkout the 3 video snippets for a glimpse at his versatility. The quaint venue is amazing. At over 125 years old, t's officially listed as historic. And, despite being 50+ feet high, it is made almost entirely of red wood. That yields really warm acoustics that never harshly echo. A quick glance at the calendar and it appears there's something going on 5-6 days/week. Lots of free parking, though you might have to walk a bit, and likely uphill. They sell snacks and drinks at the venue (no bringing in your own). All purses do get checked. The concession prices are high ($6-8 for a single can of beer or a vodka-seltzer) but consistent/average for concert venues. Seats are reasonably comfortable (old movie-house-style, fold up/down, lightly padded) with a nifty cupholder on the back of the seat in front of you. Restrooms are off premises - yep, you gotta exit the auditorium and walk about 75 feet to a small structure that houses the men's/women's bathrooms. Your wrist band that you should have received upon entry, gets you back into the auditorium (don't exit without it)! Oh and maybe don't forget your ear protection - I brought some decent small ones from home and was glad I did, seeing how close we were. Upon exiting the venue it is a little dark along the various walkways to your car and your phone can light the path. Things are congested for about 15-20 minutes but it all moves slowly/surely because it's not massive like an arena or stadium. I can see why so many big names come here!

I played in wind ensembles and symphony orchestras as a youngster, but definitely fall in the category of amateur, at best. I do love a good night out at the performing arts, though. The orchestra this summer, led by Maestro Peter Oundjian, is exceptional. I can't remember a symphonic performance that was more intricately perfect in ensemble and intonation than the three I have heard this summer. That each individual performer could be put into a large group and perform as one in such an exceptional way is truly awe-inspiring. I'm going to hear the Dvorak tonight, and simply can't wait! For those who don't know, the Colorado Symphony is now fortuitous in being led by Maestro Oundjian, and under his leadership, I can only imagine that the sky is the limit! That said, there is something very special about driving into the Boulder country/mountains to this little auditorium in Chautauqua Park, with exceptional acoustics and an orchestra composed of some of the best musicians from around the country. What an absolute treat! While the Denver Center for the Performing Arts is a national treasure for us in Colorado, I promise you won't miss the traffic and parking fees of downtown Denver!

Located near…read morebeautiful Paonia, the ranch offers 4 cabins for a week long stay; cabins are a mile to a mile and a half from each other so you feel like all the ranch belongs to you. Each cabin comes with 2 horses and their tack. (You can get more for an additional price.) When the husband and I checked into the ranch and Arrowhead cabin, their ranch hand brought us a matching set of ponies and started to show us basic horse care. Once he realized I was an experienced horse person, he said for us to come get him if we needed any help. Other than the ranch hand coming back the next day to ask if I would trade my pony because they needed an easy horse for another family for Smitty, the ranch's pack horse who had not been ridden all summer but knew Smitty and I would be fine together, we had the ranch to ourselves. There are tons of trails to ride on, lakes to fish in, boats to paddle in, and 4 wheel roads to drive on (all inclusive). We did not see any of the other families the whole week. Now, if you are not such an isolationist as we are, you can go down to the main lodge for a visit with other families or the owners. The cabins are run by propane and slightly rustic. You have all the comforts of home except a TV and telephone which is what we wanted for our vacation escape. We did go into town to get fresh peaches and other food but basically spent an incredible week catching up with each other and pretending Arrowhead was our private cabin. From reading the guest book, families come year after year even leaving some personal items such as games and sports equipment doing the same thing we did, pretending this was their private get away. The only reason G R Bar gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because they advertise the great fishing in their lakes. Since we were there at the end of the season, most fish had been fished out and eaten. This made the husband a bit cranky as he is a catch and release man. Other than that, I cannot even begin to tell you how fabulous the G R Bar Ranch is for a family vacation. And once you go, you become their family and receive a Christmas card every year.

It is literally off the beaten path (you should have 4 wheel drive) and not one of those places where there are ten cabins next to each other and you wave to one another from your individual fire pits in the evening. No, this is the real deal! You are alone, you have no neighbors, and there is endless abundant nature to explore. I loved my early morning cup of coffee on the front porch. The air smells so good and just listening to the little sounds around me, the rustle of the leaves, the small animals and birds, was so soothing. It is rustic (everything runs on propane), but you will have everything you need in one of the most beautiful places there are. I was actually worried about my teenage son on a recent visit (there is no "free wifi" and cell reception is spotty or nonexistent), but he loved it! This is a wonderful place for families to connect the old fashioned way - play a board game, hike, fish, go horseback riding, or just relax. I have heard they also have great hunting for those so inclined. My family and I will definitely be back for another visit, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful place to anyone looking for a very special vacation spot. Five stars!!
