The builder was another problem entirely ultimately resulting in me having to cancel the project. Serge was the only part that made the entire ordeal less nightmarish. He was professional, great communication, and an absolute pleasure to work with. On his initial walkthrough, he free-hand sketched 90% of the blueprints with exact measurements. I was amazed. In the spring of 2017, my wife and I undertook the project of a complete renovation of our 1923,…read morecolonial including a 2 story add-on addition to the first floor kitchen; install of 1st and 2nd floor bathrooms; complete rewiring of original electric; basement refinishing; restoration of original and install of new floors; removing wall between dining room and kitchen; incorporation of enclosed porch into rest of house; installation of central air; construction of new deck off of kitchen. We chose Brian from 4 different architects based on his portfolio as well as his general demeanor in dealing with people. He gave us several design options when we told him our wish list and worked closely with us in the lead-up to the actual construction; tweaking the designs to accommodate our ideas and presenting us with alternative ideas to help us realize better design options. Brian's familiarity with Teaneck, NJ building codes was very important to our project as my wife and I had heard from other contractors and architects that Teaneck is a lot more stringent than other townships. We found this to be true during subsequent inspections during the 6-month course of construction as well as post-construction application for Certificate of Occupancy. Brian was with us every step of the way, helping us resolve unforeseen issues (HVAC) as well as providing various drawings required by the township at various stages leading up to the CO. We can whole-heartedly recommend Callahan Architecture for the quality of the work as well as quality of Brian's character.

After taking the initial payment, there was no meaningful delivery. I did not receive a single professional, usable artifact. Communication was inconsistent to nonexistent, with weeks and even months of silence. He stated he only works Saturdays and often said "my phone will start ringing," which clearly impacted delivery. In one exchange he became defensive and dismissive, which was unprofessional. If someone cannot manage time and communication, the outcome suffers--exactly what happened here. I had to terminate the engagement, losing time and money, and received no follow-up or accountability. I ignored my initial instincts and regret it. Think carefully before hiring.

Marissa and her design team put together a detailed plan, including virtual design plans where we were able to see all their ideas and designs. The team presented us with various layouts for all the different areas of the house, and after selecting our preferred options the team went to work finding great furniture options for each room. We were presented multiple options for each piece of furniture and visuals to help us see how everything looked together. After making our selections, the team did a great job of keeping us updated on the status of all of our items. They arranged to have our items delivered to their warehouse to minimize the deliveries to our house, which worked out great. Once the majority of our items arrived, we scheduled a moving day where the team was on hand to make sure everything was delivered and placed exactly where it was supposed to go (and they made sure no items were damaged). Marissa and team did an amazing job transforming our new house into our home! The layouts and décor they put together for our home are amazing!
