For almost 30 years I've been hoping to stay at the Couples Resort..and this year I was finally able to make it happen.
I'd heard so many wonderful things from family and friends who've visited the resort, or who heard secondhand themselves how much it had to offer.
Well, that was then...
Things seem to have changed.
My husband and I were disappointed with the whole experience.
I knew from many reviews that rooms needed updating, but it turns out that was the least of our concerns.
On the plus side, the wait staff are pleasant and really go out of their way to make dinner service and other areas, enjoyable. Bringing our own wine was a nice option. And the meals were generally quite tasty. Albeit, there's not many options for vegans. We weren't happy that we couldn't eat the non vegan soup on night 2, for instance. Meaning we weren't entitled to 5 courses, as was described. A vegan option for every course should be provided. Especially at the $$ we paid.
Breakfast was delivered fresh and on time to our room.
What didn't we like?
Well, for one, there's so many extra charges. For parking (where else could we leave the car??), coffee Keurig in the room, non alcoholic drinks at dinner, and for some toiletries. I've never stayed at a resort that's charges for in room coffee! We were delivered small vegan breakfasts and advised we'd be charged for simple sides like toast and home fries. People, there's only 2 meals included a day. Can we at least get a full serving?
The games room. Given it's winter and there'd be less outdoor amenities like a pool, we were excited about the idea of a games room. Well, wow, does this room need updating and maintenance. Ping pong paddles are all torn up, half the darts were broken, the games tables are dirty and warped...and the whole room desperately needs a cleaning. We still managed to spend time in this spot and make do with what they offered.
Our junior suite was pretty nice, and comfortable. The lake view was lovely. No real complaints expect the hallways need to be cleaner. My husband actually went out and swept up the mess by the wood pile. And the tv system is slow and challenging to navigate.
We were at the resort over New Year's Eve. We knew there wouldn't be a full blown party available. But a few seasonal decorations would have been nice in the dining room. And lively live entertainment. (The duo on Saturday December 30 was terrific, though.) It just felt like any other night...
I think this was once a glorious getaway. Hopefully that can be restored. Or else, they should market it for what it really seems to be - a casual, rustic 3 star country lodge. Definitely NOT a 5 star luxury resort. read more
