My partner and I came here to grab some fresh vegetables for our pet rabbit Cinnabun, and we also needed something to drink when we hit the road. This place is huge, with plenty of free parking on premise, and they even have a second floor where you can study etc. The staff here is friendly -- I asked one of them where the bathroom is, and she told me it was upstairs. There's a local coffee shop in there, and they have several self check out lanes as well as registers with staff. They were really busy today since it's move in weekend. Anything you imagine a grocery store having, they have. There's a bench on the side of the market if you opt to hang out, and there's also bike parking, which is really convenient. read more

Twice in the past few weeks I have gotten an item that was so far past the date of expiration it was inedible. The food is awful, the only redeeming quality is the kindness of the workers. I went here Friday. I got a drink at the check out. out of the cooler. The kid rang everything up told me my total and I swiped my card. He then told me that the drink I just paid for was leaking all over. Since there weren't anymore of that brand in the cooler, I asked if could just get something different. He said no. I then asked if he could refund it then. He said no. He said I'd have to go to customer service. I felt like HE should have had some customer service. I told him no. He said I could go get one elsewhere in the store. I asked him to do it since I didn't know where in the store there were more. He was gone roughly 3 minutes. He come back with some tall guy with a tattoo sleeve. Asking me where I got this drink. This 1.50 drink. I tell them again, right here in this cooler. Well turns out the employees that work there don't know where these drinks are. the drinks they expected me to look for. By this point, yes, I was mad. I said again, why can't I just get something else?? Then the unnamed guy with the tattoo sleeve tells me to get whatever I want. so I do. And I'm mad by this point so I'm rambling about why I'm mad. Why did he make me pay for a leaky drink? why didn't he let me have something else to start with. and I said , to myself, "This is f%$#ing ridiculous". We'll it said tattoo arm off and he got in my face telling me to get "the f&%$ out" and he kept saying "what are you going to do?" like he wanted me to fight with him. I just wanted my 1.50. Whoever he was, he's a hothead and wanted to try to intimidate me. I told him he shouldn't be cussing at customers and he told me that I said it first. I reminded him that I didn't work for county market. It's hella convenient, it's open 24/7, it houses a Caribou Coffee with free wi-fi, it has its own free parking lot, items are reasonably priced, there are always sales and coupons, they have a big liquor section... really now... what more could a college student ask for??? With the opening of a County Market at Stoughton, there really is no need for me to bum rides from friends to Market Place anymore, and I never need to worry about running out of milk or toilet paper. Plus, clubs and other organizations are always advertising/promoting here, so there's always someone giving away free food or random goodies =P read more

Oh, County Market, you are mediocre at best! Unfortunately I am out of luck being a student living in an apartment on campus without a car. I miss out on numerous luxuries such as going to a superior, more diversified grocery store that carries more than one brand (such as Meijer, *cough*). County Market is known for its VERY limited selection, just plain awful produce section (I recently purchased some healthy looking plums that were completely rotted through once I cut into them--FANTASTIC!), and a hilariously depressing discounted food section that is a breeding ground for fifty-five cent dented Flavorite brand canned food. Given that I unfortunately patronize this grocery store, I have a new-found appreciation for the more healthy and robust grocery stores, especially Dominck's and Jewel at home in the Chicagoland area. Only go to County Market if you can relate to the same unfortunate circumstances that I have. Otherwise, there is no reason to patronize this hell hole. If you're (unfortunately) from the Champaign-Urbana area, go to Meijer. read more

When my parents visited, they giggled as they asked me if we should stop by the "luxury grocery store" on campus. "What luxury grocery store," I thought as I racked my brain for anything remotely luxury about Chambana. They told me that this was their nickname for County Market because they sell low quality food at a premium price. Where the heck can you go wrong with a grocery store within walking distance of campus. Damnit, I'm jealous that my time RIGHT NEXT DOOR was spent next to an abandoned freaky building one year, a pile of rubble for a while, and then an empty field. The free-wifi was definitely helpful for the non-student/faculty without access to the UIUC network. The Caribou Coffee is another plus. This store continues to rip off the college students from out of town! I used to go in there until I realized they constantly have items in the ad ring up at normal price there. I used to spend soooo much time at the customer service desk getting price adjustments because i couldn't catch them all. They also never have any of the big savings items in the weekly ad on certain items that students would want. A 3lb bag of their frozen chicken breasts on sale this week is not carried in the store, but a more expensive per pound family style package of chicken breasts is always available. The students, a lot of them international, just don't realize these things, as they just want convenience. Also, I have found their produce is sometimes more expensive than at the county market across town. The management has been there for years and obviously do not care because I had been complaining over the years. Finally I got smart and ignored convenience to avoid continually getting ripped off and now shop at other grocery stores in town Quit! County Market's proximity to students' apartments is the reason why they can command a price premium. It looks nice, but it's just a rebranded Albertson's. The produce is fresh look, albeit expensive. The meats don't look that great, but sometimes I'd buy some chicken drumsticks/thigh. If you want high quality beef, UIUC meat lab or Old Time Meat shop can provide superior quality at the same or lower price. My only real complaint so far is: They sell rancid flaxseed oil. I bought a bottle of flaxseed oil, and it was suspiciously not refrigerated, but the bottle states that it's not expired yet. I brought it home, and the oil smelled like dead fish. Somehow I lost my receipt for that purchase, so there goes $10 in the trash. To summarize, it's good if you don't want to travel far, and that's about it. read more

County Market is a popular grocery store for students @UIUC because it is the only decent one that you can visit without the need for long bus rides or walks. It is situated near several apartment complexes, which makes it very convenient for many. However, that's about the only good thing about County Market. The selection of fresh produce is limited, although it covers the basics. A few things even have the organic variety, although at a heavy markup. Most fruit seems to be almost or already rotten, as well as some of the veggies. The meat market is probably the worst I have ever seen. What the hell is "yesterday's fresh beef"?! Who wants to buy that?, absolutely disgusting! Selection of prepackaged cuts of meat are abundant, and a butcher is present, although they are not great cuts of meat. Not all cuts may be stocked on a particular day as well, and for some reason, finding a whole chicken can be a gamble. If you're looking for fresh fish, go elsewhere. All the "fresh" seafood looks and smells like it's been out for quite some time. If you must buy seafood here, get frozen. I don't eat much if any packaged/processed/frozen foods, but there seems to be plenty of those here. You can also buy some basic kitchen items here as well. There is also a Redbox as this location. There is a Caribou Coffee inside, as well as a small cafe section, where you can buy some prepared food for lunch if you are so inclined (I haven't tried it). They have gelato too. There is also a study area on the second floor. The staff here seem to be a mixed bunch, some are quite friendly and nice, but others can be a bit rude. There are often issues with checking out, e.g. price charged is higher than marked, or self checkout thinks you need an ID to buy some grapes. Prices are overall higher than elsewhere, since you are paying for the convenience of a grocery store on campus. If you have a car, I strongly recommend taking a trip to Wal-Mart or Meijer for your groceries. You'll face a wider selection of foods, both fresh and processed, as well as cheaper prices. Overall, this is an acceptable place for students without a car, but a poor choice for those that do. read more

Junior year, me and County Market were best of friends. I spent a lot of time getting produce there, which was enough to get me through with the essentials (tons and tons of pasta and milk). While it was convenient, across the street from me, in fact.. It did leave some to be desired: 1. Deals, occasionally you'd strike gold with the Penny Pincher coupons, but outside of that, you are paying for convenience 2. Selection, to my surprise, they had shallots, but if you are looking for big containers of organic spinach, or a wide variety of FRESH (County Market hasn't always given me prime selection. Smelly kale anyone?) foods, you best be hitting up a farmer's market or getting on a car/bus elsewhere. Why 4 stars? Convenience, man. The free wifi was a godsend when my roommate took his router for the summer. Also, on those days when you need a boost, the rotisserie chicken and/or chicken strips were hot and ready for take out. First things first, I don't have a car. So I'm a captive audience for County Market, which is the closest store to my apartment. County Market has a good selection, and I rarely if ever have trouble finding things. It was funny how at the beginning of the school year certain items were just GONE, but I attribute that to people coming back and everyone needing soy sauce, ketchup, etc. However, I went there the other day and there was only one sort of tofu, which my friend informed me was not the best type. This is a small quibble, though, and I'm sure it happens in other stores. For me the only thing I don't like about County Market is the state of produce. Often times I've picked up fruit or veggies and they've been close to going bad or already there. Or I'll buy bananas and they'll be so green I can't eat them for a week. I don't mind going through fruits and veggies and finding good ones, but if there aren't any good that makes it a but difficult. County Market seems like a miniature grocery store from the outside, but it seems to have all of its bases covered. You can get pretty much anything from toothpaste to tortilla chips. We stocked my sister up on all of her pantry essentials last weekend. I didn't really look at the prices, because I wasn't the one paying, but they seemed to have a good selection of all brands, including their generic. 1. The bakery and deli looked nice, but I didn't note the brands of lunchmeat they carry. 2. There is a Caribou inside, which was good for me, because after about an hour of walking the aisles with another hour to go, I was ready for a Chai. 3. The butcher section offered "zero additive" meats, which was great, and also had a selection of made-in-house sausage and burger combinations. Plus, slab bacon. How do you say no to slab bacon? 4. The produce selection left a little to be desired, but I'm a produce snob. There's gotta be a whole foods or fresh market around somewhere where she can get that stuff. All in all, for general grocery items, dairy, and some meat, not bad. read more

It has a good selection of produce, meats, and bakery goods that can save you a trip to marketplace. County Market is known for being inexpensive, but there is a point where quality becomes more important. After my last two visits to the new CM on campus, I have hit that point. My most recent experience is what has made me realize I should not shop for produce here: after coming home with grapes, blueberries, and carrots from the produce section, I learned that all three had one issue or another. The grapes had been placed in the wrong area, so I ended up with seeded instead of seedless. Upon opening the carrots, I experienced a strong stench of fermentation--this is most likely attributed to being in heat. Lastly, the blueberries have become moldy. One can argue that blame should be placed on the transport service, but I have never had problems at Schnucks. I have had to throw away $4 blueberries, $2 carrots, and I'm very disappointed in my grapes. I'm at a $6 disadvantage, so in fact I saved nothing by shopping here. When I went to CM the other day to return the carrots (at this point they had fermented to a point that was nauseating, and I wanted to make customer service aware of this fact), I was greeted by a young man who was singing and acting, well, kind of obnoxious. I interrupted him, gently, with my request to have the carrots refunded. As I did not have my receipt, he said I could swap. I told him that I would open up the next bag in front of him to see if it smells similar. As we walked to produce, he went into the warehouse area without returning, so I walked back to CS and did so in front of another representative who agreed that these, too, smelled off. Some less important but equally annoying stuff went on as he asked another employee to smell, but eventually I got my money back. At any rate, the overall experience was disappointing to say the least. A previous experience also indicates a lack of commitment to quality customer service. About a month ago, I decided to do my grocery shopping there. I had a full load of groceries that would have been more appropriate for someone to help me with (especially since a significant portion was produce). There were employees available, but they were standing around and chatting. This became a chaotic experience as a woman who oversaw self-checkout was "helping" me by being extremely rude and pushy. I might come in here for a sandwich or pre-packaged items, but I am NEVER coming here for normal grocery shopping again. read more

County Market is open 24/7 and they have all the essential groceries such as meats, fruits, cooking & baking ingredients, frozen foods, etc. They even have warm and fresh rotisserie chicken for about 7 or 8 bucks; it's good for at least three meals! It is pretty awesome if you want a variety, or to take a chance on something new. However, even if you are like me and you like both pizza and beer, you don't need to try Pizza Beer. 24/7 grocery on campus? How could this get lower than 5 stars!? The prices aren't spectacular, but certainly lower than I was expecting. I have shopped here fairly extensively since it opened, as I live in the immediate vicinity. I would say on average the prices are ~10% higher than Meijer and Walmart, but of course for the many students on campus who do not have a car (including myself), this is easily justified. The selection in the place is pretty phenomenal for the size. It has a medium-sized deli, a fairly large sized meat selection including some pretty decent fish (remember, we're in central Illinois here. The bar for decent fish is pretty low.), and the rest of the store is jam-packed. They make really good use of the space. The alcohol selection is very extensive, and the prices are certainly lower than anything in the immediate vicinity ("Discount" Liquor, Piccadilly). The Caribou Coffee is just OK, there are much better choices a few blocks away on Green (Starbucks, Dunkin'), or by the Psychology Building on Daniels (Espresso Royale). The free wifi is very nice, and the study area stays open 24/7 along with the rest of the grocery store. Apparently there is even a small clinic now in the place somewhere? It must be upstairs as I have never seen it. TL;DR: Great selection, decent prices for the location. Open 24/7. read more

A Campustown fixture. Located on 4th/Springfield with entrances in the front and the back side of the building. The parking lot is on the north side. The lot is clean and well maintained. The grocery store is set up for easy shopping. The veggies and fruit seem a little higher price and could be fresher. The deli counter is well stocked and the clerks are helpful and take the time to be of assistance. However, there are times you have to locate a clerk. There is salad bar and take out counter. The store offers a nice coffee bar. The check outs are self serve or with a cashier. Overall, an OK place to shop. read more

I was trying to find a birthday cake for my niece, a student at U of I, and I called on a Sunday night and the bakery people were gone, but store manager went out of his way to help me place an order for pick up the next day. He actually called the bakery manager at home to ensure they could do as I needed and spent all the time I needed on the phone. The price seemed fair and I felt confident that all would go well.
