So far I have had two colonoscopies and both with Dr. Coughlin and I highly recommend Dr. Coughlin. Both of these screenings went extremely well. My first visit to Dr. Coughlin was in 2004 as a referral from my PCP. My second screening was in 2012. Dr. Coughlin took the time to listen to me and my concerns along with explaining how the procedure is done and the expected results. My first screening required the old way of fasting and cleansing for two days. The current method is a one day process now. This is the worst part of the procedure, however if you are prepared and knowledgeable about the cleansing liquid and tricks to make it not so bad, the entire process is good. Still no fun with the cleansing liquid and no eating for 24 hours. Both of my colonoscopies went well and Dr. Coughlin explained the results and gave me a detailed report of his findings. Having been in the ultrasound medical field for 11 years, I have thought about doing the procedure without sedation just to see how all the equipment is used during the procedure. In talking to Dr. Coughlin and others in the field about doing the procedure without sedation, I understand why this is not a common practice. A colonsocopy is not something anyone looks forward to, however when you have an experienced and knowledgeable physician like Dr. Coughlin it makes something that we wish we didn't have to do into something that we do not dread. read more

Awesome Dr greatly improved my situation . THANK YOU

Dr. Richard (Dick) Coughlin, MD, FACS, specializes in colon and rectal surgery. If you are a Baby Boomer, you have been told a zillion times you need a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer. Dr. Coughlin makes this rather trying and unpleasant experience as simple as possible from the initial consultation to the actual procedure itself. In case you didn't know, you have to have an empty colon to be screened, and that is the worst part of a colonoscopy as you have to fast for 24 hours beforehand (OK, you can have Jello and clear liquids) and take some concoction that empties your colon. So none of that is much fun, but it is not as bad as you think. I have gone through two colonoscopies, and from experience I can tell you that Dr. Coughlin is a real pro. My first experience was with a doctor who wasn't as adept, and it was quite painful. I found out from Dr. Coughlin that I have a "tortuous" colon, which many people apparently also have. That makes it tougher to perform the procedure, but Dr. Coughlin was ready for that with a skilled hand and artfully administered pain killers. I hardly felt anything, unlike my first colonoscopy when I felt like the poor guy from the movie "Alien" that had the monster eat his way out of the guy's abdomen. Dr. Coughlin spent about 30 minutes examining my colon, which is great because pre-cancerous polyps can be quite small, and once you've invested all this time getting ready for the procedure, you want to make sure that the doctor is also going to be careful in finding things that might kill you. He gave me a detailed report of his findings and personally went over it with me afterwards. I recovered from the anesthesia (also administered by Dr. Coughlin) in just 15 minutes with no nausea or headaches. A colonsocopy is not something anyone looks forward to, but believe me, it makes all the difference in the world if you have a doctor as good as Dr. Coughlin. read more

Dr. Richard Coughlin is a brilliant proctologist--he and his staff will probe you coming or going! Earlier in the month of my scheduled colonoscopy, I had another medical procedure which did not go as well as that doctor and I had expected. When I rationally determined that the colonoscopy preparation might be detrimental to my slower-than-expected recovery, I was on the phone the next morning as Dr. Coughlin's office opened to cancel my procedure and give the staff the opportunity schedule someone into the time slot. I cannot stomach to return to Dr. Coughlin because he slapped a $100 cancellation fee on my bill when my "doctor's excuse" from my other physician was in my hand. read more

I saw Dr. Coughlin for an emergency issue - I am a patient of another doctor in the same office who was out of the office this particular day. Dr. Coughlin fit me into his schedule, actually seeing me during his lunch break. He is very kind and takes whatever time is necessary. The office is a little old and the staff is very busy most of the time (always friendly), but all in all, very worth it to see this doctor. They aren't affiliated with Stanford of San Jose Medical, which is nice. "Independent" doctors like these are becoming harder and harder to find. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Coughlin. In the initial meeting, he thoroughly explained the colonoscopy procedure, risks, benefits and possible diagnosis. I had some dietary questions which he readily answered. When he informed me that the procedure was usually performed under sedation, I asked if it was possible to avoid sedation so that I might drive myself home and have the remainder of the day as a productive day. He said "Sure! " So the next morning, I had a colonoscopy without sedation. During the procedure, when he thought I might feel some discomfort he warned me. I am really glad I avoided sedation as I was able to leave the facility immediately thereafter and had a great day! The nurse said only about 1 patient per month does it without sedation. crazy! Whether with or without sedation, Dr. Coughlin will do a great job for you. read more

Supposedly a good doctor, but I'll never know, since they never pick up the phone or call you back. I've probably called more than 10 times at various times of the day, and I pretty much have their voicemail message memorized. Their voicemail message is more concerned with telemarketers than trying to service current or potential patients. LOL. No problem. Plenty of other good doctors out there. read more

I had the pleasure of coming across Dr. Coughlin as a result of an evaluation. I found him to be friendly, kind, and medically knowledgeable and experienced. Both he and his staff were attentive and abided by our scheduled appointment time. I would not hesitate to visit this doctor again or recommend him to a friend or family member. read more

I've seen him for many years - several colonoscopies & 2 other surgeries. Wouldn't have anyone else. I've had NO problems with staff or scheduling. He's caring, careful, thoughtful, perceptive, professional & a few other adjectives I can't remember. I've seen (& worked with) many doctors in my 70 years & only one comes near matching him. And he referred me to Dr. Coughlin. read more

I've been to Dr. Coughlin twice for colonoscopies, and the first time I was SCARED to even step foot in the office (not his fault)!! About 20 years ago I had a sigmoidoscopy, which is essentially half what a coloscopy is (only goes half way). That was done at a general practitioner office, no sedation, and had to be the most painful, uncomfortable thing I've even been through when conscious. In order to see, they have to pump in air. Think of the worst gas you've ever had and multiply it by 10. So when I reached the dreaded "you're 50, go get your rear checked out", I was NOT a happy camper and delayed it at least a year (not smart). I finally looked around and found Dr. Coughlin. He went through the whole procedure, listened to and understood my trepidation based on past experience. He said it would be under sedation, and I was all for that. I don't know how Dave H could do it without sedation since a coloscopy goes twice as far as a sigmoidoscopy, which to me sounds twice as bad (granted, what they used 20 years ago was about the diameter of a small redwood trunk compared with what they use now). I went in for the procedure (BTW, the prep sucks, but it is SO much better than it was 20 years ago--can you say several self-done enimas as part of the 24hr routine?!! They get it better every time I go). It consisted of me getting into the lovely and airy hospital gown. I changed, and while still in the changing area, they came in and put an IV in. They said they'd give me something to start relaxing me, then said in a few minutes they'd wheel me in and that I might or might not doze off. I laid there for a while, dozed on an off for a few minutes, and then started to get a little impatient. I finally asked a passing nurse when they were going to do it, and she said I was all done, and when I was feeling up to it, to go ahead and get dressed!! What?!!! That was incredible. I got the IV while lying on my side, and the next thing I know, I'm lying there on my side, all done, and ready to go!! Surgical procedures don't get any better than this!! So, the results: He found some polyps, removed and immediately examined them. All benign, and no follow up for 5 years. :) I went back for my 5 year and the only difference between the first and second time is that they don't sedate you until you are actually in the procedure room, which only meant that I got to see some of the stuff they were about to shove where the sun don't shine and then I was out. Results: clean and clear as a whistle. While the sigmoidoscopy was definitely a pain in the rear (pun intended), this was great. After my experience with the sigmoidoscopy, I had no problem asking my wife to drive me home afterwards; I was working an hour after that. Either Dr. Coughlin's technique and the equipment is vastly superior to my 20 year old sigmoidoscopy (which I'm sure is true--don't go to a tire repair shop to get your fuel injectors cleaned), or Dave H is either superman or has no feeling from his waist down. :) I say good for him to be able to do that. But for me, give me sedation! (seriously, was a good experience (and all of the above is actually true). If you want to smile about it (even funnier to read after you've gone through it), look up "Dave Barry colonoscopy" on the internet. Really funny read). read more

Dr. Coughlin is patient, asks pertinent questions and really listens to your answers. He was able to determine my problem by listening to my complaints and a physical exam. If I continue to have problems, he will do further testing. However, I followed his advice and have been feeling so much better. In spite of having a full office he made me feel as if he had nothing more important to do at that moment than to determine my problem and find the best way to solve it. read more

I had a very poor experience, yet I'd prefer not to post remarks as it may have been a corner-case experience (just a bad day). I'm just posting the rating in case it isn't a corner case. Regards, Guy read more

Dr. Coughlin is the best! I had a series of unfortunate events that led me to him and I was seen in a matter of a few days. The worst part of a colonoscopy is having to drink that nasty stuff; the procedure is a breeze. I will have the privilege of seeing him on an annual basis! Bottoms up! read more

I was referred for a minor procedure which required a couple of visits. His beside manner is fantastic! With a calm and light manner, he definitely puts you at ease. When doing the exam and subsequent procedures, as best I can tell, he's quick and efficient. HOWEVER, I didn't feel rushed or hurried even once. He was always happy to answer questions and go over any concerns. I had a problem come up at point point between visits and got a call back within the hour. Nice. The waiting room is a little dated and they're actually in a converted home (several doctors share the office), but I went at different times of the day and never had parking problems. Staff was friendly and professional (billing, appointments, etc. all handled pleasantly). Board certified and clearly experienced, I feel lucky to have found him. I could go on, but I think I've made my point. If you need someone in his specialty, he's an excellent choice. read more

My husband went to Dr. Coughlin and had to have a surgery done. They scheduled it really fast and then when surgery was done he was on his way. A year later his same spot is bleeding when I called to schedule an appt they said he is no longer allowed back. After his surgery was a crazy time in life new babies and there bill fell through and off to collections. My husband paid collections. But now they won't help him and are sending him off to find someone else to take care of there error. So if I were you avoid this place. Life happens and people make mistakes especially when there are new family member involved. read more

This guy knows his shit. (Sorry couldn't resist.) He was professional. Descriptive about what he was doing. I was under a lot of work stress and messed up the date of my colonscopy. I had taken the medicine and he still stayed late and squeezed me into see him. I could tell he was tired but still performed the procedure. Great service if you ask me. He also gets that diet is the best form of prevention. All of his hand outs emphasize the healthy life style. I will see him for future check ups. read more

I have had two colonoscopies with Dr Coughlin and am scheduled for a third next week. I find Dr Coughlin a very thorough, caring and easy to talk with. The office visit is to go over your history and to answer questons. His office staff takes care of setting up the appointment at the hospital. Rose scheduled the procedure day and carefully went over all the preration that is necessary. She was very thorough and made sure I understood the procedure and what I needed to do. She was absolutely great. This is not a plesant procedure, to say the least, but with Dr. Coughlin you will have excellent care. read more

I wish I could give him a million stars! I'm 48, but am trying to rule out some symptoms that I think are related to MS. He was so nice, listened to what I had to say, did not act like I was crazy at all. We discussed what I wanted as far as medication, & I told him I had a bad experience with a colonoscopy 25 years ago, & I wanted to be completely out. I had no desire yo watch anything, remember anything, just wake me when it's over, & that's exactly what happened, & I woke up feeling great! I'm not always in the best condition coming out of anesthesia, but I felt 100% after the procedure. It turns out that it was a good thing I had this done, because he found way to many polyps for someone my age, & had I waited until 50, they may have turned cancerous. He removed & biopsied all but one, that he couldn't get via colonoscopy. I was really impressed that rather than just schedule me to surgery, he's referring me to one of the only Dr's in the country who can remove these types of polyps via colonoscopy, which is much preferred. He also told me that there is something hereditary going on because of the number of polyps I have, & that if I have siblings they should have colonoscopies done right away, because mine had been growing for several years. This could be life saving, if my siblings weren't so stubborn, but oh well. I'm also going to take him up on his recommendation that me & my kids have some genetic testing done. Someone talked about the prep, yeah that one is minus a million stars, lol, but it's obviously not the Dr's fault. I think there are some older reviews that talked about a pill, but they don't do that anymore, as it has been found to cause kidney issues. So if you've had surgery, you probably had to by this over the counter fizzy stuff (I can't remember what it's called) & nothing to eat or drink after midnight, right? Yeah, not this. This is a prescription with 2 bottles you have to drink. My procedure was at 3:30 on a Friday, but from when I woke up on Thursday morning I had to start the clear liquid thing. When my kids found out I wasn't going to get my latte for 2 days in a row, they called their Uncle & ran away for 2 days, lol. So I drink the vile stuff at 7pm, it did not take long to work, problem is, I threw the whole thing up. I called the Dr on call, I had to go get a bottle of the fizzy stuff & drink that that night, & still drink the 2nd bottle on Friday. He gave me some tips for that, & fortunately I had prescription anti nausea medicine that I took beforehand, & I made it through. One of the things that helped me make it through was figuring I wouldn't have to do this for at least 5 years, but after what he found, nope, 6 months & then every year for the rest of my life. So when your suffering through your prep, it could always be worse, lol. read more

I have had care from Dr. Coughlin four times now and all have been excellent experiences. Three of my visits were routine colonoscopies and one was a bit more urgent, to deal with some bleeding due to cancer radiation therapy. In every case, Dr. Coughlin was more than just professional, he was open, friendly and easy to get answers from. I could not recommend him more highly (my wife has gone to him twice, based on my rec.). Like everything medical, you have to be your own advocate and follow up to be sure things are going properly with paperwork and the like. read more

After successfully avoiding a colonoscopy for 10 years, it was finally time to do it. I was referred to Dr. Coughlin by my new physician. He knew I was hesitant to have one done and assured me that Dr. Coughlin was excellent. After reading Dave's review, I also asked about doing the procedure without sedation. Dr. Coughlin replied "sure, I do a lot of them." He explained that I would feel some discomfort and cramping, but that he could warn me when we were coming to a turn. So, I scheduled the procedure and had the colonoscopy done without being sedated. Yes, it was uncomfortable and there was one turn that was worse than all of the rest, but all in all it was not as bad as I had imagined it was going to be. I attribute this to Dr. Coughlin's skillfulness. He did a great job of warning when the turns we're coming and the entire process went well. I was back to work in no time and felt great afterwards. Thanks Dr. Coughlin - you are the best! read more
