By no fault of Cottage Vet Care, I've held off on writing a review due to the reason we had to visit Cottage in the first place. It was a difficult situation we weren't expecting. Given the delicate nature of it, their handling of the situation was very much appreciated. We weren't expecting to say goodbye to my boy that day, but their communication and approach to the entire process made what was already incredibly painful just a little bit easier to handle. They gave me as much time as they could before and after, and it meant a lot for a clinic that had never met us or my dog before that day to show that level of care. We will be taking our other dogs here for care after Cottage earned my trust in their capabilities and professionalism. read more

Pacific Grove keeps on delivering hidden gems. Our recent trip to Cottage Veterinary Care was a real treat. The office is located in a historic cottage in downtown Pacific Grove. There's convenient parking across the street in a city lot. They are still controlling the amount of people allowed into the waiting area (Covid protocol) by having you call ahead when you arrive. All of the staff were very friendly and clearly animal lovers. The Veterinarian was very thorough and mentioned that our cat likely had acromegaly, which (upon further investigation) seemed almost obvious, and no other vet had ever mentioned. This has been my vet for over a year. I first took my dog there when he had back problems last August (a dachshund mix is prone to these). They helped us fix that with meds and rest and he was his normal self again within weeks. Last Friday he suddenly had a huge abscess on his cheek. They squeezed him in his appointment ASAP, drained the abscess and scheduled him for surgery only 3 days later. He is home resting now. :) But the thing I really love about this vet is whenever we walk down the street they are on, my dog tries to run up the stairs! He absolutely loves them! My previous dogs at other vets would sit down and put the brakes on. They did not want to go. So obviously this vet office treats their animals with love and respect. We adopted a baby kitty at the end of September 2017 and we quickly realized that he was very sick with a stomach bug and a severe upper respiratory infection. Dr. Wilkins saw him several times over a couple of weeks and at his last re-check he had finally turned a corner and when Dr, Wilkins saw him, she exclaimed, "Macaron! Oh you're feeling so much better! I was so worried about you!" And she kissed him on the top of his little noggin. It almost made me cry. She truly cares about the well-being of her patients, and she understands what our fur-babies mean to us. He's fine now, and says "mew" instead of "blurp". Thank you Dr. Wilkins!!! read more

I love Cottage Vet! Dr Kim, Laurie and Katie are some of my favorite people in the world. They are so kind and caring and have seen me and my dogs through some hard times. They never make me feel like I'm crazy for thinking something is wrong and always make me feel understood and heard. They're always cheerful and take the time to listen. They sent a lovely card when my dog Boudreaux died in August and always make me feel like a good dog owner. Dr Kim is proactive and caught Addison's disease in my dog Moose very early so we could get treatment started. I'll never go to any other vet. read more

I'm writing a review for an absolute heartbreak that happened 5 years ago with this veterinary practice. It's taken me this long to write this review. I'm writing it in the hope it helps others. I took in my darling five-year-old playful cat for some skin allergy issues. While there, the vet suggested a tooth extraction. I agreed. After I picked her up from a Friday surgery, I could tell something was wrong by 9 pm that night. By Saturday, she was flat out on the floor gasping for breath. I rushed my beloved little girl to the Monterey emergency clinic across town. They placed her in an oxygen enclosure. After 30 hours and no improvement, the attending vet there suggested we should end her suffering. My heart was broken into a million pieces. I called Cottage Veterinary as soon as they were open. Dr. Wilkins seemed surprised but only offered a few ideas of what might have gone wrong. My cat's body had already been picked up for cremation, so no postmortem testing was possible. She did speak with the emergency vet, but in the long run, basically shrugged her shoulders and took no true responsibility for my cat's death. Perhaps it was the Convenia shot? Perhaps she didn't tolerate the anesthetic? No solid conclusion was made. In hindsight, it was malpractice. They charged me the full amount for the surgery. The front desk lady handed me the bill (although this loss is hardly about the money) - - I looked her in the eye and said "my healthy girl here on Friday is now dead - and you are handing me this bill?" The following week they sent me a boilerplate sympathy card. And that was it. No more communication from them. That was the end of my sweet cat Holly's life. I'm still devastated. I have believed all these years that if I had gone to a larger professional practice such as Monterey Animal Hospital, my cat would be with me today. Now, her ashes are in a little urn under flowers in my garden. If this vet suggests dental or extraction surgery, I deeply urge you to look elsewhere. read more

On the plus side they are very nice and polite. BUT... This veterinary service has let me down repeatedly regarding my golden retrievers care. Since 1973 I have taken my Goldens to local vets in Monterey and the Peninsula. In the start of their business after several visits I liked Kim and felt Cottage Vet put their priority on the customer and their pet before questionable business practices for profit that could endanger the pet. In the last year I have had 3 appointments delayed or cancelled due to overbooking, delays, and an outbreak of covid in their office. Recently I needed routine vaccinations and a travel certificate for a trip to Canada. A couple of days before my appointment for shots and heart worm test they phoned me and cancelled. I did not have time to schedule with other vets in the area, (three weeks wait), along with a required complete physical, (over $300 additional). They could have arranged with other vets to help their customers receive needed care without referring them to emergency vets which are poor in our area and very expensive along with poor ratings. I have had several bad experiences from emergency vets in the past and have had to drive hundreds of miles to UC Davis in order to get proper care for my pet. Including a misdiagnosed report of cancer in his front leg which I was told needed to be removed. $6000 later at UC Davis I was told it was just a bruised bone and he was fine. Recently Cottage Vet were unable to diagnose a chronic problem with him coughing and sneezing and dismissed my question if it could be Covid. Well after many months of worry I sent his fecal matter to a University in PA and it turned out to be Covid. There is no specific treatment for Covid for dogs but at least I know what is wrong with him and that my conscious is clear. Today I received a phone call from Pet Meds that Cottage vet would not authorize a refill prescription for heart worm pills. This is after 11 years of monthly, never being a day late, giving him his heart guard. The heart guard company states that they do not need to be tested if they have not missed their monthly pill. The SPCA told me that some vets require testing every year and some don't require it. In our part of the country heart worms are very rare, and it is unnecessary to test if properly medicated monthly. I would highly recommend going to shot clinics for routine care and taking them to UC Davis for serious conditions. I dearly love my dogs and would do anything for them, but I do not like unnecessary tests and procedures which are very expensive and not needed. Richard Davis Pacific Grove CA read more

Cottage Vet currently cares for my 3 dogs and 3 cats. Dr. Jen & Dr. Val are both very gentle with the animals and it's obvious how much they care about animals. We've been using Dr. Jen since the practice opened and have appreciated the very personal approach she takes to each of our pets, sometimes resulting in evening calls to explain test results, etc, if she was not able to talk to us earlier in the day. It is really unfortunate that I have to give a bad review on this clinic. The vet was very kind and spent time talking with me about my dogs's liver issue. However, when we agreed that he would be re-tested for liver values ONLY to find out if he could even qualify for surgery, they did a complete blood panel which cost nearly $200 more on a teacher salary. We were not made aware of this, nor would they take responsibility for the error. The practice manager basically kicked us to the curb because we wanted them to at least take responsibility for the mistake. read more

I had to take my kitty to the veterinarian for a well kitty visit. My kitty is not exactly 100% veterinarian or strange people friendly. Kitty and I had a heart-to-heart talk I explained to him that he just had to go see the veterinarian. It was COVID; it's been a long time and Kitty never had been to the doctor. He was a semi-feral kitty when he rescued us; four years ago. We got kitty in the carrier and took him down to cottage veterinarian care. We were greeted at the door, still during Covid, and Kitty went inside to see the veterinarian all by himself. I was so proud. We found out Kitty had lots a little things that could use a tuneup but nothing really that could not be fixed. He just haven't had maintenance for a while it wasn't his, fault it was ours. He's doing great and looking forward to going back to cottage veterinarian care to get follow-up a well kitty visit. Five star experience for a nervous parent of a wonderful kitty. For the safety of all pets in the aea, I hope that one day this veterinarian's office closes it's doors! YES I dilike this place that much!!!! We took our puppy here after we adopted him for his first wellness check. I wanted to make sure he was happy and healthy. I also wanted to ask their advice on flea meds, and heartworm med. While we were there it made me really uncomfortable that they did all of the check up in their backroom away from me. Also they kept trying to push Revolution on us when we said that its wasn't what we were looking for and we wanted to us the heartworm medicine that is recommended for herding dogs (because they may or may not have a have gene called the MDR-1 gene). The vet said that was fine and if we needed a prescription than she would write it. I told her that we'll revisit this topic in a month after my puppy was neutered. One month later.... I notice that my pup's gums are a little pale and that his eyes are kind of red, so my husband calls them to see if we could come in for that and the prescription for the heart worm meds. They pretty much tell him the YOU HAVE TO COME IN TODAY, YOUR PUPPY MIGHT HAVE HEARTWORM WE NEED TO TEST HIM NOW AND HE WILL DIE IF WE DON'T SEE HIM TODAY!! So of course.. we're there! While at the office we wait forever to see the vet, but no biggie because this was very last minute. When we finally get to the back, the vet tech glances at his gums and says they look a little pale but , not dickly pale.. umm okay? What is that suppose to mean? Then we ask about heartworms, to which she replied that my puppy was too young to get the test anyways so we can't give him the test.. WTF???? We ask for the prescription of Interceptor and they tell us it's not heartworm meds, and push Revolution AGAIN!!! ughhhhh....... In the end they made it pretty impossible for us to get the Interceptor, didn't give us any concrete answers to our questions, gave my pup and booster shot without asking us! UGH I dislike this place!! AND the topper!!! The vet barely spoke two words to us and would only talk to us through the vet tech from her back office! Needless to say.. we took his file and found somewhere else!!! read more

I screwed up. I know better. I should have gone to a specialist when my dog needed a benign tumor excised from his eyelid. But I let Cottage Vet do it instead. I didn't do my due diligence because honestly, someone in my immediate family is going through metastatic cancer and I just wanted my little dog to be fixed up as soon as possible. We needed him, he is our greatest source of comfort and support right now. So I didn't ask the hard questions, I just trusted them. Later when his eye was tearing and running constantly they just said it was normal and gave me some eye drops to put in. Finally I took him to the specialist and she diagnosed him with trichiasis- the Cottage Vet surgeon had sewn his eyelid back together inside out, so that his eyelashes were growing against his eyeball. The specialist said that this was a super rare complication. However when I got Dr. Kim, the owner of Cottage Vet, on the phone, she said this was a very common complication of their surgery. I asked Dr. Kim how many of these surgeries her surgeon had done and she sidestepped the question. I don't actually know how experienced Cottage Vet is in this surgery, and what their success rate is, but Dr. Kim said this type of failure is 'common'. And she seems totally fine with that. So I had to pay the specialist to fix the trichiasis, my dog had to undergo anesthesia a second time, he's got a scarred cornea, and I am out thousands of dollars. That I don't have because of the cancer treatment my family member has needed. I am sharing this so that maybe I can save you the money and pain. read more

If you want a bright, airy, and charming location with great vets to take your pet to, this is the place to go! The staff here is beyond friendly. My pets have seen both Dr Jen and Dr Val and both seem very competent and helpful, and I'd totally recommend them to anyone searching for a vet. A really cool thing that they do here, that I haven't seen at many other vets, is that after they examine your animal and discuss options for what needs to be done next, they stop for a second and prepare an estimate of what all these options are probably going to cost. It gives you a chance to better understand what the treatments are, there are no surprises, and it enables you to make decisions based on what will work best for your situation. We love our dog as if he were our child. We carefully chose Cottage Veterinary due to its location and the Yelp reviews, and we were not disappointed! Dr. Jen and her staff are super duper friendly and take their time in examining our pooch. While he won't ever be excited or happy to be at the vet, they make him as comfortable as possible with their ample chicken treats and soothing ways. As the previous poster noted, they give you multiple options in your pet's treatment and are never pushy in terms of ordering unnecessary tests or suggesting costly treatments, as we have experienced with other vets. Their fees are more than reasonable in terms of the personal treatment and attention they give to you. The office itself is cute as a button - it's a renovated little victorian with a garden view which lends to its comfy, stylish but yet so homey interior. We couldn't imagine trusting our little one to another vet. read more

Yahooo! I've found my vet place! I'm super excited to share the find. I have a bazillion year-old terrier mix whose breath was GNARLY! i mean, he'd be in a different room and his breath was fumigating the entire house and you could smell it while in another room. Well, i took him to Cottage Vet today and first impression: LOVED the cute place! Clean, airy, and modern-cottage'y looking. It actually smells GOOD when you walk in and you'd never know there are animals in there because it's so clean. Second, the receptionist (Heathyr) is the friendliest and kindest EVER. Third, the assistant always had a smile on her face despite her poor nostrils flaring from the stench. And last but not least, the doctor was friendly, upfront, honest, down to earth, thorough and KIND, even whilst holding her breath from the dumpster-quality air emanating from my poor dog's mouth. The doctor quickly and rather urgently suggested extraction of his teeth due to major infection and rotted teeth (we adopted him, so we had no idea). After giving me the estimate, and my agreeing to it, she went to work. I now have a normal smelling dog laying by my feet, still recuperating and toothless, but already seeming happier and healthier. Prices are very fair and competitive, staff is superb, and doctors are GREAT. Very happy with the service and will be bringing my other dogs here! read more

I can not speak highly enough about this place! The office is adorable and the care is exceptional. From the first visit it feels like you stepped back in time when small town vets really cared more about their patients then their wallets. We've been taking our little 14 year cavapom here for just over a year. Our little guy is older and has a history of seizures so it was important to us to find just the right vet for him. We've already had a couple emergency visits and they are always able to get us in right away, even on a rainy Saturday morning! They always offer a conservative treatment option in addition to the more costly or aggressive options and let us decide how we want to proceed. For the first time in years we have his seizures under control (just by changing his feeding schedule!) and could not be happier with the care he receives. Loved the vet, who got down on the floor with my furry child, Abby to check out her itchy skin and look her over. Abby loved everyone there too! The vet started NOT by standing at a computer and jacking up the bill, by adding prescription meds and a list of other costly needs that start ringing up loads of $$$$$. Instead, she acutally recommeneded I try a few home remedy items like flax seed oil, and benedryl, before we consider prescription meds and shots. It's so refershing to find someone who actually is mindful of not taking advantage of my love for my pet through my pocketbook. I always felt so taken advantage of at my prior vets office. I cannot say enough great things about Dr.Kim and her crew. Our dog runs up the stairs to see them, even though he knows he's probably gonna get a thermometer up the bum. (All the treats probably help) He also got sick over a weekend, and we had to take him to the Emergency vet hospital because they weren't open on Sundays, well the next day we called and instead of saying to bring him in and take a look, they said he's on meds and doing fine, awesome, only bring him in if it gets worse. I was happy that they were open on a Saturday. The vet that is down the road from me is closed on the weekends and I do not like the other places that were available- mainly emergency clinics. Nikon had been playing with his friends and took a wrong step off and tore his dewclaw. I was able to clean and bandage him up. I gave CVC a call and spoke to Devyn, who talked to Dr. Welch to see if they could squeeze Nikon in. They said no problem and to come on down. They were friendly and had me in and out in about 20 minutes. I filled out the necessary paperwork and Dr. Welch gave Nikon a physical look over. The whole procedure was quick and he got a cute pink bandage in the end. I like how Dr. Welch only recommended antibiotics if there was more swelling or excessive leaking from the wound. She mentioned that because the area was cleaned prior and that I got him in relatively quick, there was not an immediate need for meds. The cost of the procedure was reasonable, compared to the last place I went to for Nikon's dewclaw. read more
