This was a great place to stop. The food was great. I got the grilled salmon with fresh cut fries. My salmon was cooked perfectly and the fries were very good. I got chocolate pudding for my appetizer and it was amazing. It was very chocolaty and flavorful. My Dad got Reuben skins and they were amazing. The potato's were so good and I could eat them again any day of the week. For dessert I got chocolate Oreo milkshake and my sister got chocolate marshmallow. The service was friendly and fast. She was always checking to make sure we were ok, but not too often to be annoying. Cole slaw was very good. Freshly made. Turkey and waffles - real roasted turkey was moist and delicious and it was a nice light white gravy. The waffle had a very good taste. The fried cabbage and bacon is great!!! They make their own ice cream too. Salted caramel was a rich, deep flavored, creamy ice cream. So good. They also had Shoo Fly Pie (home made). One of the best I have ever had! And I have had a lot! Just on't quote me on it) you can seat where you like if the table is available. I spotted a corner booth and planted my hangry self ready to scarf some good food! Ordered well, you can see the pic. And the aftermath of my attack. Which only took 13 minutes. Food is freaking delicious! This lands this breakfast in top 3 of BEST breakfasts I've ever had. So, if you're traveling (please don't be a tourist, be a traveler) through these parts, and decide to stop in Lamar, Pa. Do yourself a favour, hit up this spot up! It is right across the overrated Golden Arches! If for whatever reason you find yourself marooned in Mill Hall Pennsylvania while being hungry there are truly only so many choices. You've got a McD's, a Subway (because they're freakin' everywhere including the new location opening in my garage next week), gas station food from the three truck stops all within a mile of each other and some shady looking biker bar attached to a hell hole looking motel and the Cottage Family Restaurant. Cottage looked like the only place to grab a decent sit down meal plus the reviews weren't horrible so we stopped there by default. The decor leaves a lot to be desired. Sort of a faux-chalet thing going on outside and inside things are small with lots of wood, hokey sayings on the wall and the booth we sat had a few rips on the seat. In terms of menu it's more or less what you would find at any diner. Wide selection where any itch can be scratched, nothing is done great but at least the prices are reasonable. Kids grilled cheese was acceptable although it had to have been the smallest one I've ever seen. Three adult pasta dishes all were decent although the sauce seemed nuked as it was unnaturally hot for a very long time. The overall service was decent except that we had no idea that you need to pay up front at the end which caused us to sit around for ten minutes while all of the servers talked, fooled around on their phones and rolled up utensils in napkins. Also noteworthy and not surprising is that we were the youngest people in the restaurant by easily a quarter century. Yes, it's that kind of place. Overall you could do worse I suppose by scrounging for food at the Pilot or T/A truck stops but just know that at best you're talking mid-range no frills diner food and at worst the Subway at the Pilot isn't looking too bad. read more

I knew when the cole slaw came out this was going to be a great meal. Most places use pre cut cabbage and carrots in their cole slaw but this was freshly shredded, honestly something I haven't had in a while. I got the chicken tenders dinner and I started holding out hope they might be homemade, too. They were indeed and the whole meal, with shoestring pie, was absolutely fabulous. While in town for work, I stopped here for a late lunch with some coworkers after we heard a recommendation from another coworker that it was a good spot. We were quickly greeted at the door and the place was busy so there was only an empty table in the very back corner. Our waitress was friendly and efficient but was very quiet. I had the lemon pepper shrimp skewers with corn and mashed potatoes. My coworkers ordered chicken salads and a BLT sandwich. We were all satisfied with our selections and had a good bit of food leftover due to the large portion sizes. This looked alright and we were falling asleep behind the wheel so, Cottage it is. Seat yourself, don't mind if I do. Friendly servers/hostesses, and very efficient. You can tell they've been doing this for awhile. I got a "Philly grill" which was a huge portion of chunks of hamburger, grilled onion and green pepper, scrambled egg, potato, and cheddar cheese. Served with your choice of white, wheat or rye. Giant portion. I ate till I burst and it looked like I didn't make a dent. Plus it was tasty. Didn't even need salt. J got two eggs, toast, potatoes, and bacon. Again the portion was ample and the bacon was crisp. No complaints from Mr. Picky. Two meals, two iced teas, plus tax- $18.19. So my concern is if this is indicative of how this restaurant cleans, what's going on in the kitchen?
