A year ago or so, I got a new set of tires at the Costco Warehouse on Dimond here in Anchorage. A month ago, my front passenger-side tire developed a slow leak. I took the tire in and they let me know that the tire could not be repaired, but that they would honor their warranty and replace the tire. "But it will take a few weeks," I was told. We had our first snow three weeks ago now, and a few slippery mornings since. I felt very unsafe driving around on that dinky little Subaru Forester spare Subaru gives you. So I called the store manager and asked if anything could be done. She said she'd look into it and call me back. She called back and told me the Tire Center manager had located a tire at another dealership here in Anchorage and if I could pick it up, Costco would pay for the tire and mount it for me. I got the tire, took it to the Tire Center and in minutes, not only did the crew mount my tire, they took off a rear tire and put it up on the passenger-side so that the front two tires would have matching tread, and mounted the new tire on the rear. I have felt both extremely thankful and a whole lot more safe since then, and I really feel grateful to the Costco Dimond management and staff who helped me out of my bad situation. read more

Coming here can be hazardous to my wallet. This is the one place where if I see a ginormous box of chocolates or an industrial-sized bucket of ice cream, I will throw my money down without hesitation. This place is also crowded at all hours and this is the place where I would see local political figures like Tony Knowles and some other former mayors standing in line at the registers. What really makes this place so popular are their outstanding deals on meat, dairy products, and pre-made pizzas or meals like lasagnas, shepherd's pies, meatloafs, and appetizer trays in addition to the great deals you can get by grabbing lunch at the eatery up front. The combo pizza is my go-to if I want a large pizza at a cheap price. The hot dogs and their chicken bakes are among the best deals in town for the portions and very filling afterwards. However, the cheapest way to have lunch here is by eating every free sample given to you as you're walking around the store. I usually don't buy things in bulk but I can't pass up a good deal on a huge box of 17 Pepperoni Hot Pockets for work lunches at less than $10.00. This is also the one place I would consider buying electronics like a laptop or a flat-screen TV before going to Best Buy just to compare prices. I really wish they had a section for TV shows on DVD. With their prices on DVDs, this would be a good excuse for me to buy in bulk without having to wait for weekly specials to start at other stores every Tuesday. read more

This place is a danger zone for us. We always walk in with one or two items in mind and walk out with a gazillion other items that we might or might not need. Their products are excellent quality. I think I read somewhere that if some items don't fly out of the shelf, they would stop carrying that product. They often have tasting stations featuring different items. I'm a sucker for this because the food always taste so good. I can't remember there was ever a time I'm not happy with my purchase. Since you're buying in bulk, the price is cheaper. However, everything comes in large amount so keep in mind of purchasing perishable items if you're not going to use them right away. Unfortunately, the gas price is only slightly cheaper if not the same as other gas stations. The good thing is that Costco will send you a reward voucher if you spend over a certain amount for that year. They also have exceptional customer satisfaction policy. If you are not happy with your purchase, you can bring it back and they will refund the full amount. There was a story featuring on the radio that a customer brought back a dead Christmas tree after the holiday and they still returned her money. Don't be that customer! But that to show that Costco sure goes through great lengths to keep their customers happy. read more

Buy Buy Buy your crazy Americans!!! The more the better. I love the rotisserie chickens for 4.99$ and the combo pizza is super for lunch and only 1.99$/slice. Costco doesn't really help us out a lot because it's too much and food goes bad before you can eat everything. It makes us plump to try to eat everything before it goes bad. So save now on bulk groceries because you'll need it to pay the medical bills!! I can see how it helps families on a budget but be careful of all the processed food in your diet!! Speaking of medical bills I love their liquor section. Nothing like getting 8$ off a barrel of vodka!! Oh and a quick tip about their coupons, you only need to take one from the book because they mostly all have the same bar code so once it's scanned you get all of the discounts from the other coupons if you bought those items as well. Saves cutting time!! :o) They have pretty good deals on tires which are crazy expensive up here in Alaska. I'm always somewhat a fan of Costco's, and since this one was in AK and I'm from CA, I wanted to see if there were any regional brands and items in stock here not found in California. For the most part, I saw much of the same, but instead of where in Sunny Cali you see swimsuits and bikini's for the beach, there's warmer winter wear here in Alaska. Food-wise, pretty much the same. Gasoline was $3.15/gallon late Aug, which was on par (maybe a little higher) than in So Cal (last I paid was $2.99/gallon), but definitely cheaper gas here than any local gas stations, for cost savings. read more

Need bear spray? A robot vacuum? A lifetime supply of peanut-butter filled pretzels? Well, Costco is for you. This location is, well... a Costco, which means almost the same as any other Costco, with a few minor differences. The inventory at the Dimond location seems slightly inferior to others in the area, but that may depend on what you are looking for. The staff seems generally pleasant and willing to assist you. The whole Costco experience seems to depend on how crowded the store is when you go there. If it is not crowded, shopping can be an enjoyable experience. Oddly, around 7 PM seems to be a good time. If you choose poorly, your visit can feel like a cross between a COVID super-spreader convention and the Running of the Bulls. Regardless of when you visit, the parking is terrible. Like, one of the worst in town. Some items are significantly more expensive here than in Costcos in the Lower 48, so beware. I wish the Costco website / app had the ability to check stock at your local store as well. read more

The best place to shop and get cheap bite to eat. The store is always busy, but its clean and organized. The weekend is the busiest and have all the sample vendors on every aisle. I cannot, for the life of me, fathom why Costco doesn't open a third location in the Anchorage area. Not only do the products come in bulk, so do the crowds! Sometimes it's just not worth it. Alaskans love Costco and that is evident at almost all hours of the day. It is pretty rare (even on weekdays) to not feel a little claustrophobic in this warehouse. (There is some irony there, I realize...) But I sound like I'm complaining! I come here at least once a month because 1) I pay for a membership but more importantly 2) the deals are great and I hate grocery shopping. May as well knock out as much of it at once as possible. The produce is generally excellent (though I have had some dodgy bananas before). I'm always happy with the variety of veggies in stock. The only reason to shop anywhere else is if you need smaller amounts of things, which is what I did when I lived alone. Costco for the basics, Carrs for the perishables. Now I pretty much get everything there, including the tires on my car, the photo on my passport and the laptop in my home office. I may not like the crowds but shout-out to all the free samples stations. You make the experience a little more manageable. (Especially when there's something with melty cheese on it. We shop here 2-3 times a month, and we've been members for 20+ years. We love it. We've never had a negative experience with the store, products, nor employees. I've been to Costco in So. Cal, Oregon, etc.... same prices which is a huge deal for Alaska! If you shop on the weekend during the day, as with all other Costco I've been to, expect a crowd and the need for patience. Obviously, going weeknights between 6-8pm is ideal if you want to avoid congestion and lines. read more

Excellent place for getting gas, it is also located close to the highway that goes to the Kenai Peninsula. I was glad to see that my Costco card from another state worked here just fine. When I first moved here, about five years ago, I was STUNNED by the prices at Fred Meyers and Carrs... it pained me to go to the grocery store. I'd been to Sam's Clubs before. You get a lot of cheap stuff cheaply - I wasn't really interested. You can get the same (or nearly the same) prices buying normal amounts of cheap junk at Wal-Mart. When my ma-in-law brought me to Costco, I had an epiphany. At Costco, you can get a lot of NICE stuff cheaply. I only shop for two, so for some perishable items I have to shop elsewhere, but I really love my Costco! Also, we have the exec membership that earns 2% back on purchases (not gas, too bad) - it MORE than covers the cost of membership. Yup, I'm lovin' my Costco. read more

IT'S A TRAP. A glorious, bulk-buying, tantalizing trap! I may come to Costco to buy in bulk for things I use frequently but there's always something else that catches my eye and somehow ends up in my cart. There's a selection of standard items but there are usually a variety of seasonal items as well. Let's talk food because I'm obsessed with food. There's the affordable cafe. Nothing fancy but it's inexpensive to get a giant pretzel, frozen yogurt, or ginormous fountain drink. And sometimes that's exactly what I want. If you can't handle the gargantuan food offerings, there are often free samples throughout the store. They make for a good snack. Or if you stop at every station, you could probably make a meal of it. Think of it as Costco's version of complimentary tapas. Parking & the crowds definitely aren't my favorite, especially around the holidays. But after navigating the hoards, I get to go home and bask in the glory of my bulk purchases. read more

On November 30th there was a 7.0 earthquake in the Anchorage area, and we went to multiple places searching for water. Most stores had either sold out or had completely jacked up their prices. From trying to find a parking spot, limited cart return locations, and waiting in checkout lines, I only try to make a once-a-year trip to avoid the stress. I like Costco for the simple fact that I can buy baby formula, diapers and wipes cheaper than anywhere else. Oh that and GALLONS of Pine-sol. You can usually find everything you need, if not, ask a checker. Don't forget, if you want to take home a nom nom pizza and you're paying with a credit card be sure to pay for it in the cattle drive lines. They don't take cards at the food court. If you don't mind buying elsewhere to avoid the lines at Costco, it may be a good idea if you hate shopping, like me. Hey, do you need bulk in everything? This is the place to go then. Everything from cheap clothing, tissue, perishables, animal food, is housed in this giant warehouse. Every now and then I'll spring $1.50 for a hot dog. I come mostly to get dogfood at $30 for 25 lbs is a decent deal, especially since it is natural and filler free. Bathrooms are always gross, so I would not go here if I can help it. read more

Costco is an amazing company! Their customer service is always top notch. But today at the Dimond store they went above and beyond my expectations. I went to fill a prescription for my elder dog who is terminal. I had run out of his heart pills and had to refill them. When I brought the prescription 15 minutes before they closed, they were very accommodating & filled the script. My husband and I were in Alaska for vacation this past July and was told to seek out Costco in Anchorage for supplies (i.e. water, fruits, nuts, road trip sort of food). Apparently this Costco is the largest in the Northwest. If you're from out of state, it's mind blowing to see what Alaskans need... first, the store is double the size of any Costco we have ever been to in CA. For example, there's an entire isle dedicated to dog food. Everything is double the size. The vitamin palettes are twice a much...absolutely incredible. You will find commercial fishing nets, sets of cardboard ice boxes for packing salmon, game, etc.. If you're not adverse to Costco food, shopping here is pretty cost effective considering how expensive eating out is in Alaska...with very little options. The Costco food court serves the usual menu BUT in Alaska, they ALSO have a generous size of chili! OMG!!! It has got to be one of the best chili I have ever had for the value. I can only imagine how divine it would be on a cold Alaskan day. Definitely check this place out if you're in Anchorage! read more

Costco as a whole is fine. I was a Sams customer so obviously Costco is not my first choice. However Sams tire club apparently wasn't that great either. What upsets me most, tho, is that I just recently went there to get my tires changed over. They told me there was something wrong with one of my tires (which are 1-2 years old with excellent tread left) and tried to sell me 4 new tires. I said no thanks and walked away. Took my tires to Matt's Auto, who said one tire was questionable (from Sams having taken it off/putting it on the last time) but the tire did go on the rim and seal appropriately. I'll have to watch for a leak or to see if it does go flat but at least I didn't waste any money on tires I may not have had to buy. read more

Disappointed. Left my car at the tire shop on standby, in case they had extra space to squeeze me in. Called to check and was told they couldn't get it done and to come pick up car. When I arrived, 45 minutes before scheduled to closing time, the bays were ALL empty and they were done cleaning up. Outstanding service by outside worker! I had the privilege to meet Joseph tonight and he was very helpful. Not only did he load 10 cases of water in my SUV but he noticed that on of my cases was missing bottles of water. He promptly asked another young man, i did not catch his name, to exchange it for me while he continued to load my vehicle. Afterwards, while talking he said if I need anything at any time to just ask for him and he would be willing to help! Trust me I will ask for Joseph again because he not only was helpful but polite. read more

This Costco is an average of three stars, been shopping at both anchorage locations for much of my life and this is the gist on this one, both general tendencies and smaller experiences of both good and bad: Pros: - A decent majority of food is less expensive than average Alaskan prices - dimond Costco generally has more gluten free options than the debarr location (demographics) - I've used the eyewear section about 6-8 times in 15 the years and they have been super helpful both for replacement glasses and very minor repairs. (Only consistent positive interaction with non managers) Cons: - very poor management of vegetables/perishables. I know most of the problem is the nature of alaska shipping/trucking but the fact they leave so much there that is past it's sell by/best by date it's pretty bad. I only buy carrots and potatoes (maybe onions or celery... maybe) at Costco now, everything else goes bad too fast. - tire service is terrible. Prices? Possibly in some cases below average (not guaranteed though) but it's not more convenient to get them even during tire swap season and the service is really really poor. Like fire 75% of the tire service employees poor. Go somewhere else. - employee interactions: speed at checkout, questions about products or locations, photos, even picking up pizzas, are all basically dependent on how much an employee hates their life that day. Managers are usually helpful and at least polite but everyone else is day to day. Could be fast/slow or rude/polite or any mix of them just depends. So try and be nice to them so they don't hate their life so much and it works out better for the other customers. - since Sams club closed this place is always packed. Packed to the brim. Don't go on holidays, near holidays, don't go at beginning or end of the month or middle of the month. Don't go on Saturday or Sunday. Basically figure out a way to take an early lunch on a Tuesday so if you have a normal monthly shopping list (~$250 to $350 of items) you can make it out in under an hour. Most of my time is usually spent waiting for someone to get out of the way. It isn't really Costco's fault but it #1 reason I wait till the very end of the day or go first thing in the morning. Pro tip: A good strategy is to get behind a rough looking dude who is there to shop for a small business (look for the massive cart, checking watch, not on his phone, between ages 25-45, any older than that and it's probably an old person from Homer who wants to shop around all day) and just charge through the moms and geriatrics. Overall I still go because it helps my budget for food but I try not to talk to any employees and do all I can to avoid the extra large crowds. Because there is always a crowd. read more

Among their many great products under their private Kirkland Signature brand is one that I think deserves special mention, and that's Kirkland Signature's Microwave Popping Corn. I am a huge Costco fan but their tire department must be run by people who have little or no interest in customer satisfaction. It could be just bad management or lack of management but their tire department is really lousy. This morning I got to Costco before they opened and stood in line for two hours only to be told that all slots were full for the day. Had I known that I would not make it through the line I would not have waited. I assumed that management would cut off the line when the number waiting exceeded their capacity but they did not. They wasted hundreds of hours of people's valuable time. If Costco needs help designing a system that works I am available. read more
