I went in for lunch and decided on a michelada and ceviche. The expectation was far from what I thought it would be. Omg I can't say it loud enough how much I've grown to love this small family owned spot! I was set to get a fruit bowl next door during my lunch and noticed their Special sign and decided to give it a try. Well I'm so glad my stomach had a change otherwise I couldn't post a review about this Hidden Gem!! This place is family owned( no, not my family I'm just a foodie customer), super friendly mom, dad and son. They cater more to sea food menu but I am currently in love with their enchilada special as well as that homemade salsa that is fantastic. I mean it's so spicy but I can't help dumping the entire thing on my plate. I have seen others eating seafood plates and shrimp cocktails.. their food looked to be hearty and plentiful to me work the price. SO good!!! We both had Tortas. The meat was so flavorful and good, and the tortas had beans on them which really pulled it together and made it like a comfort food. They have so many options. Usually I don't like Jamaica but theirs is sooo good. This place easily became one of our spots because the food is cheap and the service is amazing. The woman up front was such a sweetheart and she makes you feel right at home. The place itself is small and doesn't look like it gets much business which is sad because they definitely deserve it. If your coming to a Mariscos restaurant- order Mariscos! This place is just a little diamond in the ruff as most hole in the wall places are. We ordered a fish burrito & the whole fried fish plate. The most delicious succulent fish fried & seasoned to perfection. And on top of it all was the most tastiest little bowl of fish soup- with nice size meaty fish. Ugh this was the worst mariscos I've ever had in all my 24 years in San Diego. The rice was like cous cous texture, the beans fell flat (I hate dark brown smooshy beans) and the fish tacos were absolute shit. They tasted super fishy, I'm not even sure what the toppings were. It was slimy. The salsa was watery and the chips were cheap. They were playing uncomfortably loud Norteño music in the restaurant and it was obnoxious! I don't know why I decided to try this place out for the first time now I feel like shit and like I need to wash my mouth out. Disgusting! Give me back my $10. read more

My buddy and I wanted some mariscos and always wanted to try this place out because its been there for a while. We see the 99 cent fish or shrimp taco and for 99 cents sign. I order a small campechana, 2 fish tacos, and a shrimp taco. My busy gets 3 fish tacos and 1 shrimp. I thought the campechana was decent, not the greatest, but decent. The tacos were greasy and the fish and shrimp has too much breading. We pay and the guy rings up a big ol' bill for the tacos. We told him isn't it 99 cents he said you got the bigger more expensive tacos. If we knew that we wouldn't have ordered those bread tacos. They didn't even look that big. Bottom line is this place sells mediocre food for outlandish prices. I would never eat here again! I would rather go to Mariscos German on Hoilster street. One star for Costa Azul! read more

I've always driven by but have never tried this place before. I've read the reviews and was anticipating the same result from those that gave low ratings. I had ordered a fish burrito. The batter was crispy and the serving size was good. The burrito came with lechuga but wasn't used as a means of filling the burrito up completely. There were several filets of fish in my burrito and the sauce provided just the right amount of flavor to tie everything in. I was really satisfied with my meal. Having dined in I was served a platter of tortilla chips and a small bowl of salsa. The chips were crispy and the salsa had both flavor and bearable heat. The decor at this time is a tacky turquoise color, but I can dig it. It's simple and the jukebox has been playing some nice tunes. There aren't that many seating available, but I dined in at 1830 so I had plenty to choose from. The shop owners were nice and attentive. Service was very prompt. I am willing to come back to try something else and see if the negative reviews hold some merit, but for now I am pleased with my experience. read more

Went here for dinner. We had a coupon for buy one carne asada fries, get one free from the local paper. I don't know where to begin. We dined in. It's a small place that has about 4 tables or so. The carne asada fries didn't take too long to cook. As soon as the guy comes out with our food, I was drooling. As soon as I took a bite, it filled my mouth with flavor. I added the hot salsa & boy that really kicked in the spicy in the food. The fries were crispy, not soggy & the carne asada meat was tender & flavorful. Guacamole & the white Mexican cheese was added to the fries as well. Service was great by the guy working there since it was just me, my daughter & hubby at the place. This is my definite go to place for great carne asada fries. I will be back to try more on their menu. This place is a must try if you are in the South Bay. read more

Nothing personal, but the fish tacos at Costa Azul Mariscos were pretty lame. I've had better Fish Tacos from those traveling "Roach Coaches" you see around San Diego. Let me put it to you like this...I'm not a fan of Rubio's Fish Tacos, but I think their tacos are far better than the ones served at Costa Azul Mariscos. This is a tough review for me to write as I hate making extreme negative comments about a business. However I had such horrible meal that I feel obligated to warn others who may have tastes that are more accustomed to quality mexican food. in fact, I would give this restaurant a worse rating but 1 is the lowest allowed. The eat-in accomodations are limited, austere and the over all appearance of the restaurant is not particulary clean. Additionally, the restaurant appears to be half of a larger space that was very poorly and unprofessionally divided by an unfinished, hand built/installed separating wall. Since I was a bit hesitant about eating here I thought I'd play it safe and ordered cheese enchiladas and fish tacos. Or at least I thought I was and I was explicit in making sure it was understood that I wanted nothing cooked in lard. The cook assured me that he would use only melted butter. After eating only a few bites of each item i tossed the whole thing in the trash as I was unable to finish it. The tortillas used for both the enchiladas and tacos were absolutely soaked in butter from being "warmed" on the grill. The fish had a thin but very greasy crust and seemed as if they might have been deep-fried (in lard?). To top it all off, literally, the cheese in the enchiladas must have been the cheapest cheese available and had horrible and greasy taste to it. In fact I had such a horrible after taste that I immediately brushed my teeth, gargled with mouthwash and nearly vomited during the process. read more

Okay I love this place! Their salsa is the bomb. When we show up they already know they need to be ready to bring more. I love their tostadas and that's mainly what we go for. The food was underseasoned the carne asada was cut so small you could hardly taste it and what you did taste was fatty.
