Ding Dong Sushi - Rainbow roll and salmon mango roll

Ding Dong Sushi

Upminster

This was recommended by a fellow foodie. As there is literally no sushi places I know of within a…read more10 mile radius of Romford that is considered decent enough to even attempt to try. The pricing is pretty fair. Most rolls range from £6-8 and there's an average of 6 pieces in each roll. It's much better than going all the way into central with the astronomical pricing. As of right now it is all takeaway. We called to order ahead and we arrived 20 minutes later and it was already ready for us! They pack them in with a generous heaping of prawn crackers so that's quite lovely! My friends get the volcano roll, they love it a lot and is their go to roll. I got the classic rainbow roll and a salmon mango roll. Both had 6 pieces. The rainbow roll was good, with the usual California roll, it was topped with 2 prawns, 2 tuna, and 2 salmon. The portions themselves are massive as I saw some photos on Google reviews. I was afraid it would just be all rice, but it's a fair balance! The mango in the salmon mango roll was very sweet and had generous chunks along with nice cuts of fresh salmon. Service as far as I can see is decent. We should have checked though as my friends only got one set of chopsticks and we didn't get tissues. So make sure to check/ask when you order out! TL;DR Rolls are good, price is fair. Definitely worth trying it!

Hoppers - Chili Cheese Dosa

I stopped by for lunch around 2pm on a Saturday -- the place was still packed, but I was able to…read moresnag a cosy seat at the window since I was dining by myself. In a related and very lovely gesture, the server brought me a complimentary mutton roll (with chilli ketchup) and said they usually send something on the house for solo diners :) The roll was delicious -- savoury mutton without a strong game-y flavour that went really nicely with the mildly spicy ketchup. I decided to have an order of the Lankan chicken kari paired with a hopper. I did not know what a hopper was before then (let alone seen one), so it was an interesting surprise when I was served this unevenly thick, bowl-shaped rice pancake. Fortunately, I did not go wrong with this choice, as the hopper was so delicious. The light rice-based flavour of the hopper paired so nicely with the rich, slightly spicy curry and the tender and savoury chicken, and I really liked the textural variety of the hopper itself (thicker, spongier base and thinner, crispier sides). The ratio of hopper to curry was not quite right, though, so I ended up ordering another roti to enjoy the remaining half of my curry and chicken. The roti was really delicious -- fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside -- and similarly paired super well in carrying the curry flavour. All in all, price point was pretty solid for the quality and amount of food. I thought the hopper was pricier than expected, but conversely the curry was less so -- so overall it all seemed quite reasonable. I would love the chance to come visit again and try more of their deliciously fragrant curry options next time.

My coworkers suggested we try Hoppers on a recent business trip. None of us had ever had Sri Lankan…read morefood, so we opted for the Group Menu. The server was a great help in guiding us through and helping us to order a good sample of items. The food was brought out a good pace. We had ti.e to eat each course and never felt overwhelmed. The food was delicious. There was no item we did not like. The items we ordered offered a balance of heat and cool.

Ruby - Peshwari naan

The restaurant looks like a transformed Tudor house where inside resembled a 19th century British Indian influence decor. It had lovely exposed beams and columns inside giving the place a bit of history and rusticness amongst his classy decor and fancy table layout. Service was very professional and well mannered. A Mango lassi This is off the menu but make sure you ask for it. Not the richest of mangos but still very refreshing and nice to have. A good thick consistency with a lovely fruity sweet yogurt flavour Prawn puri A delightful starter. The prawns were fresh and springy in a wonderfully tangy sweet mildly spiced curry. Matching with that was the lovely doughy and stretchy puri bread which did a great job at soaking the complex curry sauce as well as prolonging the flavours of the prawns and the fried bread as I moreishly chewed my way through it. Baigun I didn't expect this to end up being one of my favourite aubergine dishes of all times. It was incredible. The aubergine was roasted to perfection creating a lovely gooey buttery flesh. Then stuffed with spinach, cheese and herbs and baked to create an explosion of flavours, exaggerating all the silky and velvety textures. The cheese became the glue binding everything together as well as lifting its umami flavours. Served with a sweet tangy mild spiced chilli sauce to add a nice zing to it Shamee kebab A nice fragrant herby kebab, flattened out into patties. Sadly it lost a lot of moisture in the cooking process making it quite dense and dry. However the complex spices and flavours were still very much predominant and enjoyed. The fried egg lace was nice to have for texture but didn't really do much for flavour Ruby special Kacchi biriani Lovely rich and savoury spiced stewed beef, cooked into it's soft and took on all the complex flavours. Not the most succulent but tender enough and I enjoyed it throughly with the delicious mild vegetable curry which helped retain moisture in dish throughout. Seasoning was perfect and everything had depth. The boiled egg was very much welcomed adding a nice contrast in texture and a refreshing taste. Served on top of basmati rice which was cooked perfectly al dente and moist Sag ponir Where east meets west. Spinach cooked in a mild creamy sauce with cheddar cheese added. A great side to have especially when eating with rice or naan, keeping things moist whilst adding a nice touch of comfort with its creaminess. Flavours kept light to it was wasn't overtaking the flavours of the other dishes Ruby gosht A lovely mild and aromatic curry, rich in flavour with its sweet umami tomato flavours and tastebuds tickling spices. It was thick in consistency and embraced the lamb well, seeping its flavours into every chunk of it and in return took on its meaty flavours. The lamb was tender enough but slightly on the dry side. Luckily the lovely boiled egg gave the dish a break in its texture being much softer and lighter. An excellent curry Peshwari naan Not the fluffiness of naan but instead quite crisp chewy around the edges. Still it was nicely stuffed with coconut and almond paste giving it lovely rich sweet flavour and nuttiness which made it more likeable to slowly chew through the naan and enjoy the flavours. Went very well with the more savoury curries I think all Ruby lacks to make it the perfect experience is charm. As great as service was, it doesn't hurt for staff to smile a bit. In terms of food I can honestly say it is a lot better than most Indian restaurants in London. Some dishes may not be the most traditional way of cooking it, like using cheddar in the Sag Ponir but it works and all the dishes were aromatic and delicious. In my opinion this is the finest Indian restaurant you are ever going to get in Hertford.

Lots of waiters around so service is very good - no waiting for drink refills, paying your bill etc. Here is the classy bit - they now offer a free pick-up service using their new brightly coloured tuk-tuk. The vehicle is a genuine Indian Tuk Tuk made by a company called King and imported into the UK by Auto Rickshaws Europe. It has been converted to run on LPG and can seat 3 passengers in addition to the driver. The vehicle will be used as a free shuttle service for customers who live within Hertford. When making a booking customers can ask to be picked up in the Tuk Tuk. After your meal you can either be taken home or dropped off in the town. If you see the tuk-tuk driving around the town you can also give the driver a wave and he will give you a lift to Ruby.
