Allan's Snack Bar - Deep fried mars bars

My first dinner in the UK: fish and chips of course. My aunt who is a local, has been visiting…read moreAllan's for over 15 years and has sworn that their fish and chips is one of the best in the city. And, she was right. Looking at their menu, they have a variety of fish and chips options, rice dishes, toasties and more. I decided to go for the small fish supper (one fish, chips, mushy peas, and a pot of tea). All of our food came out fairly quickly. The place was rather busy so I was expecting to wait a little bit for the food, but not even 10 minutes later, the plates were in front of us. I added some vinegar and salt to my fish and chips and went to work. Damn, it was good! I was impressed. The batter was perfectly crispy and the fries were tangy from the vinegar. I loved every bite. While you're on the deep fried train, you need to try their deep fried mars bars. Wow. I'm not the biggest fan of mars bars, but deep fry it and pair it with some vanilla ice cream and now you're talking. Make sure to wear your stretchy pants here because you definitely will be feeling full after this meal. A local favourite that's a really great find for fish and chips if you're in the Paisley area.

Allan chose fish. It is very Italian and has the wonderful Scottish-Italian Chippy interior. Lots of wooden decor with the massive fryer sitting like a Stainless Steel Altar along one wall. It is a thing of beauty in a very lovely place. I like these guys. They were my local chippy when I lived in Paisley and I would wander down, get asked how things were going. I would talk to the owner about his golf game and the waitresses about their grandkids. Great place with great people. The large Italian owner with the booming voice would tell you about the Haddock, where he had got it that morning and the quality of it. Wonderful things. You did not mind that the haddock was cooked to order and that a trip to Allan's was a fifteen minute slice out of your day. However, in the last couple years, things have gone downhill a bit. When you have a reputation and most of your business comes from the lunchtime school trade, maybe you don't have to try as hard. Places around them have not gotten better, Allan's has just gotten a little worse. The fish is not as good and the quality of the chips is also a little less. I hope they turn it around but right now we go somewhere else.

I arrived at The Chippy Doon The Lane at the right time, around 5:45 p.m., on Tuesday 16 July 2019…read more The walk in to the entrance was through an alley between two buildings and had signage marking the restaurant was getting near, as I approached not another person did appear. The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.
