New concepts, numbers, the alphabet, etc - and of course, lots of songs - they cover it all. - Activities: art, yoga, "science lab", and Music Together - these have been great for our littles ones. - It's also nice to feel a part of the community, even though we're not Jewish. Many of the families are from different cultures/backgrounds. And it's kind of fun to hear your child pick up bits of Hebrew. The only real drawback is that October can be challenging with so many Jewish holidays (not all of them observed by other NYC schools). But we still love sending our baby and our preschooler to KK.

Here's the short version of why PKA is GREAT! - Great leadership - Josie and Quinn are awesome! They're always available for feedback and/or concerns, they love the kids, and run a tight ship (rules, curriculum, etc.) that works. - The teachers - Both locations have amazing teachers who are loving, kind, great teachers, and help our Gabriel and other kids LEARN. - The extras - they'll bring in Brian who plays guitar and the kids sing along, take field trips, do yoga (really), send photos to the parents, balance art/reading/play time/napping, etc. - They CARE! I'm new to this. First kid, etc. On several occasions I'd ask Josie or Quinn or the teachers for suggestions, tips, etc. and they would always solid, caring advice with encouragement. - I can RELAX - leaving your kid with somebody else is scary. You can't help but worry...is he okay? Are the teachers watching him? Taking care of him? Teaching him? I TRUST that he's okay and that he's being taken care of as if he's the child of Quinn, Josie, and/or any of the teachers. I KNOW he's safe, having fun, and learning. That means a whole bunch!!

Our child started in the 3's program and was passed over for kindergarten during early and regular admissions -- along with six other kids from the same class who had been there just as long. Spots went to outside families new to the school, some of whom did not meet the criteria the admissions materials describe as required. Make of that what you will. There was no communication during the process, being left in the dark while those seats were quietly filled from outside. The teachers were nice and the early education itself was a fine experience. But if you are choosing this school because you want your child growing up here through eighth grade, understand that is not a promise they actually keep.

Up until the 2022-2023 school year, Chickpeas was a parent-run cooperative preschool for 40 years. There is a social-justice focus to the preschool curriculum. But, you need to ask whether the teachers go too far with 3 and 4 year olds when your child tells you they are "scared of policemen because they kill people", with no further context. The school created their own Covid policies that went above and beyond CDC recommendations and DoH policies because that is what the teachers were comfortable with. They continue to hold very strict policies after the rest of the world has decided it's time to relax them. This is fine until the school was closed for the equivalent of almost 2 months for Covid cases. The lead teacher/executive director has been lead teacher at the school for a few years and taught there for several more. She has deeply ingrained issues with people she sees as privileged. I don't understand why she continues to work in the field she does, given the fact that small children have parents that teachers need to interact with. She has difficulty regulating her emotions when things don't go her way and the stresses of Covid have not helped. She refuses to acknowledge different perspectives and instead sees them as attacks. She has shared damaging and fabricated stories about interactions with parents. The list goes on. Both the lead teacher and one of the other teachers resigned last year. This should have been a good opportunity to hire new people and give the school new life, but the majority of parents didn't want to do the necessary work to find new teachers. There was mediation, and then the 2 teachers changed their minds and decided to stay. This was a mistake. The school has a contract with the DOE for UPK and this 2022-2023 school year it has new 3K funding, thanks to the stewardship of a few involved parents.

However, the only complaints I have on the gym itself, is that: 1: there is only 1 flat, incline, and decline bench press, which creates a problem (especially on the flat bench press) with everyone trying to use it. 2: the amount of chlorine in the pool is very high, although it is understandable due to the nature and the amount of people that go there. 3: This only applies to this one older lady who monitors the weightlifting area occasionally, but I consistently see her peering disgustedly at the young men as they talk to each other or work out, and she'll sometimes interrupt or intrude upon somone mid set to yell at them about some minuscule thing. Although I don't really see her anymore.

Their website didn't work when trying to register due to a past YMCA registration I had in the system from over a decade ago. And forget about cancelling - it's like trying to get someone at the DMV to respond to you. It's taken 3+ phone calls and 5 unanswered emails from me and I'm about to call my credit card company Agree with the other people that the sauna is not hot either. If I didn't need pool access for awhile due to physical limitations, there's absolutely no way this is worth the value of $99 a month versus going to blink fitness.

(As well as the other 2 lovely ladies at this location, Miss Jennifer, Miss Imani) These ladies kept a rowdy bunch of toddlers safe, and stimulated, and offered as far as I could see limitless patience, and a gentle touch . The space itself was fine. I've seen better, I've seen worse. I recall it was painted during our tenure , unfortunately I think it was painted during the week and I recall wondering why they would expose the kids to that , rather than do it over a weekend. There was a good amount of effort put into communication with parents, photos during the day, newsletters, reports on the child's behavior and growth. The board was initially kind enough to approve a prorated monthly fee for me, as we needed to remove our son regularly each month . The cons: and unfortunately is a big one to most families I know, there were two significant rate increases in the 17 months we attended . I had read before enrolling something of this nature and asked specifically about before commiting. Not three months later I was informed the rates were increasing . A year later I received what I think was the exact same letter, with a relatively massive increase , nearly $250 a month. Once you have settled into a home, no parent wants to disrupt that cadence in a child's life and I believe this is something very clearly understood at Bumblebees. The aggressive increases in fees, and what felt like an unusual number of days where the center was closed , Christian holidays, Jewish holidays, national holidays, and "professional development days" ultimately led to a premature leave for us . And some very conflicting feelings about the experience at Bumblebees in general.
