What a fun experience!…read more This was my first time renting a motorboat and pedal boat from Catalina. The process was smooth and instructions were clear. My friends and I did 1 hour for both activities, but I highly recommend doing 2 hours for the motorboat. For the pedal boat, you're only allowed to stay in the area where all the boats are so if you're looking to go further, rent a kayak or motorboat. You're allowed to go further out with the motorboat and with one hour, we were able to explore a bit of both sides of the island. If you'd like to explore further, definitely add more hours.

After our hour was up and we pulled into the dock, the male staff member on the dock looked directly at us and yelled "chinita" several times to make sure we heard him. To make matters worse, when telling me to drop off my life jacket, he slammed his hand against the bin and aggressively yelled at me to throw it in there. Shouting racial descriptors repeatedly at paying customers and acting physically aggressive is threatening and completely unacceptable. It made us feel incredibly unsafe and we don't intend to bring our business here again. I'd look into alternative rental options on the island instead like Wet Spot Rentals by the boat terminal, unless you appreciate being harassed for being a person of color.

The rides are around $35-40 and the only way to see these famous fish which literally Hop and skip above the waves in the early evening as the sky falls. Flying fish tour!!!…read more I was so against doing this at first. My friend talked me into it since our kayaking tour was canceled due to high wind =(. I am so glad we went though. There are two flying fish tours available on the whole island. This one I went on was $45 per person. That's $10 more than the other location. On our tour, we got the chance to see the our flying fish tour and I am sooooo glad we went on this one inside. Our captain was an awesome friendly guy named Lance. He was very knowledgeable and stopped our catamaran at the best places for us to watch the flying fish. They gave us strong flash lights that we can shine into the water to attract and see the fish. We ended up seeing sea lions, various sea creatures and a ton of the fishing fish. We also got to see the beautiful starry sky. It was a lot of fun and I definitely recommend. As for the other tour boat... it was funny seeing them zip quickly by. They don't even stop their tour to let you see the fish. They also didn't give out flash lights. They had a "main" light that would just scan the ocean. It was funny a pretty sight. We bought tickets at the Afishinado store. It was definitely worth the price. We also brought our own flash lights which I recommend.

There are two main places to snorkel on Catalina, here, and Casino Point…read more Lover's Cove is a lot calmer and peaceful compared to Casino Point. The first time we came to Catalina, we came to Lover's Cove per brother's recommendation who had lived on Catalina for a summer. We really enjoyed our time! It was the end of October, and the water was surprisingly on the warmer side (though still cold after being in it for awhile...), and we even saw a sea turtle! I guess that is fairly uncommon.. my brother said the waters must have been especially warmer that year. There are a lot of fish here, lovely orange Garibaldi, and some other guys! You don't have to swim too far out to see them, which is nice for me because I don't really like swimming. I know how to swim, but once it starts to get deep (there's a part that kind of drops off), I start to get nervous. It's right in this area where you can see the fish, so I swim around, see the fish, and then swim back to where I can put my feet down and feel solid ground again. The second time we came back to Catalina for hubby's bday, in June. We wanted to see the second snorkeling spot. Casino Point is crazy (to me) .. it's just behind the Casino, there's asphalt, and then a bunch of stairs. I literally set up my beach chair on the asphalt, and watched my husband descend the stairs, and there were a bunch of snorkelers who looked seasoned, and people in actual dive gear. The ocean this time (end of June) was very choppy and freezing cold as well. The stairs were all wet from the waves crashing against it. I was afraid my hubby would get swept away! He claims to have been fine, but it's certainly not for the faint-hearted. He said it was pretty awesome, in that you're pretty much right there, with all the fish, almost instantly. I was not confident enough to get into the water here, plus, freezing cold okay? So we head back to Lover's Cove. I get enough guts to gradually acclimate to the freezing (to me) cold water, and plunge my head under to see the fish. Yay, fish! And then after doing that a couple more times, the fish to cold ratio started to balance out and I was starting to get really cold.. so we got out. It is indeed rocky (though they are round rocks), so bring water shoes if you have them or plan to get a deep tissue massage! We set out our chairs which we borrowed from our hotel on the rocks, so that was nice to have a place to sit versus last time when we put the towel on the rocks and could feel the rocks through the towel. Really love how this place is easy access to nature's lovely creatures, even for a rather out of shape person like me who does not enjoy swimming!

It was great until the rope ripped that was connecting the boat to the parasail for the group after me. The winds picked up, it started pouring rain, and as they were driving the boat in the water, we watched the parasail start descending straight down into the water. I was having a conversation with another passenger right before it happened, wondering what the spot was on the rope. We thought it was a marker for the captain's knowledge, clearly that's where it was ripping. We had to race to the couple and pull them out of the water, thankfully they were not seriously hurt and they offered them a refund but after witnessing that, I will never be parasailing again.

Afishinados Gallery is a small gallery in Avalon, CA that hosts many local artists. No photography…read moreinside, so I absolutely wanted to respect the gallery. But I can say, truly stunning one of a kind pieces, great value. The store clerk inside gave amazing service, selection, and insight to how many artists they carried, history, etc. There were a few local shops in town, but Afishinados Gallery was the best. Highly recommend coming in when you're on the island!
