    Sunset sailing
    Kevin K.

First off, Captain Raphael is the nicest, most knowledgeable tour guide you can ask for. We were battling the weather with the clouds, but it cleared right before our time of pick up. He helped us aboard his beautiful sail boat and we took sail. As we were sailing out he was pointing out different areas of the island and letting us know the history and the present use of it all. He also told us about the wildlife and showed us some of the caves that we approached. With the sun setting we set out to sea to gain the whole view of the island and sunset that we were waiting for. Once the sail went up we were going with the motion of the ocean. Not only was it peaceful and suspenseful at the same time, he always kept us at ease, showing he had everything under control. With the waves he was able to provide any motion sickness pills that we gladly took, "just in case" lol. Everything about the boat and the knowledge he laced us up with was, remarkably! We talked about our family and our history of things we all like to do and it made it more personal. With that all said and done, not only did we see amazing views and got to ride the waves of the pacific, we gained a genuine friend that we definitely plan on seeing again with the kids. Thank you again Raphael for this experience!

Just did a sunset cruise with Christian and Raphael. We had an amazing time! They were so nice, had great communication and this really was the highlight of our anniversary trip. It was so relaxing being on the water, there was some clouds but we still had a great view. I brought some wine and they served it to us and made us a cheese plate. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique intimate experience.

We had the best time with Raphael, Tiffany, and Captain Christian. Tiffany made us the best charcuterie board and drinks! And Christian and Raphael gave us the best view of the sunset we could have asked for. 100/10

Very affordable boat charter in Catalina! It's $79 per person for a 5-6 hour trip, which is way cheaper than other stuff I've found, ranging from $300-400 for 2 hours. My boyfriend and I did the Open Adventure where we sailed to White's Landing, a secluded beach on Catalina, and then SUPed around the beach. We left the pier around 1pm and got back around 5:30. We had the whole boat to ourselves, not including Captain Ryan (who was awesome!) We went on a Thursday which is probably why there was no one else on the boat, if you choose to go on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday I doubt you would be able to get the boat to yourself, though. Captain Ryan was very friendly and fun to talk to! He is very knowledgeable about the island and told us funny stories and interesting facts about the island. We had a great time and definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to go for a nice sail around Catalina but doesn't want to pay the appalling boat charter prices.

We had a fantastic day with Ryan! A true island native with all of the answers to all of my questions...with a great sense of humor AND knowledge. We wouldn't hesitate to do this tour again next visit, for sure. Thank you, Ryan!

This was our first time on a sailboat and the boys loved it! Captain Steve and First Mate Ron maneuvered the Thesis sailboat in such an entertaining way that we all got to learn about the craft of sailing. My boys enjoyed Captain Steve's pearls of wisdom as he shared stories from his long life as a surfer and sailor. We got back pretty late and enjoyed the evening. The following is for my female friends: Don't wear a dress on this sail. Wear pants (it will get chilly on the Sunset Sail) and wear comfortable shoes because you will be transported onto the sailboat via dingy and this will be more manageable in sneakers. As far as bringing a meal to enjoy on board, we brought deli sandwiches and veggie tray to share. While we did have plenty of time to sit and eat, the rocking of the boat would have made drinking a glass of wine on board near impossible. Don't expect a smooth ride. This is a sailboat and our captain loves the waves.

Ryan set up this cozy romantic spot for us! He's the best!

This was the highlight of our trip! Me and my boyfriend booked this trip and captain Ryan made it so amazing, thank you Ryan! Ryan is the best captain so accommodating and genuine and really took good care of us. He gave us the ultimate experience and I wish there were more people like him! The boat ( thesis) was so cool! Ryan provided us with paddle boards and all the toys needed to have the best experience. His rates are so great. For the experience he provides he could charge hundreds more, he is a very fair, honest man and a true local which made the whole experience magical. All the spots he took us to were beautiful and he knew so much about the island and answered lots of questions we had along the way! Thank you for making my birthday special Ryan we will always come back to you! We brought our cooler and had some champagne and enjoyed the beautiful water and the boat!

We had a great time aboard the Thesis with Captain Ryan. He was very accommodating and we did everything we wanted to and more. The best way to see Catalina Island is looking at it from onboard the Thesis! Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Island. Not at all like other boat trips that are offered..this was like sailing with a friend.

There are two flying fish tours available on the whole island. This one I went on was $45 per person. That's $10 more than the other location. On our tour, we got the chance to see the our flying fish tour and I am sooooo glad we went on this one inside. Our captain was an awesome friendly guy named Lance. He was very knowledgeable and stopped our catamaran at the best places for us to watch the flying fish. They gave us strong flash lights that we can shine into the water to attract and see the fish. We ended up seeing sea lions, various sea creatures and a ton of the fishing fish. We also got to see the beautiful starry sky. It was a lot of fun and I definitely recommend. As for the other tour boat... it was funny seeing them zip quickly by. They don't even stop their tour to let you see the fish. They also didn't give out flash lights. They had a "main" light that would just scan the ocean. It was funny a pretty sight. We bought tickets at the Afishinado store. It was definitely worth the price. We also brought our own flash lights which I recommend.

I'm so glad I did because while we were signing the wavers, people were coming up asking about rentals and they were sold out of everything for the day. The online reservation process was quick and easy. Rentals are for a minimum of 2 hours and you have to choose your date and block your arrival time. After arriving, we had a short wait to get into our rentals. Their process was very efficient. The only downside is that they are located in the busy marina with the boats/yachts. My daughter was so excited about her kayak that she wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings, she didn't notice that a yacht was leaving the marina and headed right for her. It came so very close to plowing her down. Just watch your surroundings and you'll be just fine. Overall, everyone had an absolute blast. My daughter was absolutely shocked when a seal swam right up to her Kayak, poked his head out, made some noises, then playfully splashed water on her. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Highly Recommended!

There is also a "Circuit" ride share that will take you around the island for $2 per person. Coming in by tender from a cruise ship is great. The docking area is in town and so close to everything. I exited the tender and walked along the waterfront where I passed a few children's playgrounds with a pirate theme. Then on to where the golf carts are rented. I walked to the pier (Green Pier) where there are bathrooms and many small shops all hoping for the tourist business. They carry the typical port souvenirs. After a long walk on this short pier I got to the end where there is many people fishing with poles and the little set ups they will sell you for a few dollars and the bait too. There are plenty of benches to sit and watch the boat come in and out of the harbour. There is a small beach area that has lots of pretty colored little rocks along the shoreline. The walk to the round Casino Building is pretty much the end of the road before a mountainside resort. I passed by some waterfront restaurants that were even crowded on a cloudy day. My walk back to the tender was quick and the ride back to the cruise ship was also pretty nice and calm.

We booked a tour once to see bisons but didn't get to see animals cause it was raining. The tours we went by ourselves were much better! We saw many wild animals including bisons! The interior vineyard is so beautiful. The trips were very enjoyable but a bit of too much sun for me. Wear sunscreen and a hat to prevent sun exposure! Keep in mind that it takes 20 years to be able to buy a real car on island. Only one golf cart is allowed per residence. There are no spaces for real cars and more golf carts in Avalon. Our family and friends live here so they have a real car to take us to interiors. Yes you will need a real car to do that! Avalon has enough restaurants and bars to hang out. Casino is also a movie theater to show older movies on certain weekend evenings. They offer tours of this historic casino too. They host NYE gala every year. Beach club is great for summer times. Museum is small but still worth taking a tour. Too bad the spa has closed down, we used to go there all the time. This island has so much to offer. It's the best place for a lot of fun just a ferry ride away!

I didn't want to do the traditional grimy old experience, I wanted something that represented what meant most to my friend. Somehow by the grace of God I stumbled upon Captain Ralphs website through a review I had found in a google search. There was only 2 reviews on yelp from 4 years ago and I wasn't even sure if he was still in business but I decided to give him a call. This past weekend was single handedly 3 of the best days of my entire life as well as everyone in the bachelor party. From the moment we met Captain Ralph at 8am on Friday I knew this trip was going to be different. We all gathered on board and set sail and he had a mandatory meeting where he wanted to specifically ask each of us what he could do to make this a memorable experience. He explained to us about his culture and family and got to know about each of our histories and families as well. This charismatic floating Filipino blended in with my group of friends beyond belief. He was so hilarious and so familiar it felt like we had known him for years. Upon arriving to Catalina, Ralph knew everyone! The harbor patrol, the boat taxis, the local spots and natives, and now us. We had such an incredible time exploring Avalon but truly the best experiences of the weekend were on The Mabuhay. I thought at this point that Ralph was just an extraordinarily hospitable host who knew a lot of people but on day 2 to my surprise, on our way to two harbors he proved to be an exceptional tour guide and just the type of friend who encourages the best out of you. He took us to a fishing spot and we were catching fish like crazy and he was just cheering us on! He then took us to a cliff jumping spot and to a sea cave and again was just rooting us on and taking pictures. This is the type of person you want around. He just makes you feel so welcomed and supported. He taught us how to set up our fishing hooks, how to cut the bait, and beyond that he even cooked our fish! I hate fish but this was one of the best meals I've ever had, and overall the best day of my life and that is saying a lot. We all felt like kids again and I have never laughed as hard as I did this weekend. This experience was life changing. If you like camping, this is for you. If you like adventure, this is for you! If you just like sight seeing and great conversation, this is for you! But if you want to know what it's like to truly bond with the people you love then you need to book this experience with no one other than Captain Ralph. The whole trip I was thinking of who else and when else I could book this experience again, looking for any excuse that I could think of because it was just that great. We had the most fantastic trip, and Ralph and his family were a big part of making it the best time ever! We can't wait to go back again!
