The classical Christian approach utilized at GCA not only challenges our children, but has molded them into so much more than what we bargained for. We've noticed changes in character, maturity, discipline as well as a dramatic change their work ethic as well. The work load at GCA is heavy and extremely challenging, but also well balanced and geared toward equipping a child's mind to becoming not only successful as an adult, but impacting the world through the eyes of God's Word. No school I know of employs such a curriculum quite like GCA. We are very thankful to God to be able to send our children there. Their staff is on par with excellence.

Both of our children have loved coming to school at St. Hilda's each day. Beginners offers a beautiful introduction to school, with a warmth and groundedness in early childhood development--each day, there are new activities to try and things to learn, whether building towers and train tracks, growing plants in the greenhouse, cooking season treats, making water creatures and marble paintings, learning yoga poses, singing songs, and so much more. The introduction to school in Beginners is a wonderful one--the teachers are warm and kind, and foster a love of learning. With each grade, the school expands, and Nursery, JK, SK, and 1st grade, are met with science, art, language classes, the greenhouse, PE, and the playdeck. The curriculum is really integrated - students practice letters and numbers across social studies and foreign language classes as well as in their homeroom work time; when they study world cultures in their classrooms they simultaneously learn games played around the world in PE; their science classes connect with concepts in math worktime; and their art projects often coincide with world cultures and school celebrations. Our boys have loved learning each year about the solar system and outer space, the brain and the body, and the foundations of science, and the nearly 30 countries where French is spoken. It's impressive and thoughtful, and indicative of how St. Hilda's approaches so much of the school--with careful consideration, expertise, and a wonderful implementation. The faculty at St. Hilda's are truly remarkable. Teachers come to school with enthusiasm and joy, and it shows in their creativity in the classroom. Our children have learned so much from each teacher, from art to science to PE, because of the excitement and attentiveness of their teachers. It is an extraordinarily warm environment with an incredibly rigorous intellectual process undergirding how the school approaches each age of development and academic unit. The school is, from top-to-bottom, incredibly thoughtful about the education and experience of the children and their families. One more thing that we wouldn't have recognized until we were in it - St. Hilda's is a school for children, and also a school that values families. Events typically start in the evenings so parents with a range of responsibilities can, by and large, attend. One of the first things the Head of School often says is a thank you to the parents for taking time out of their days and family life to be there. It's small, but we've noticed how deep it runs. The school values the families as people, and families matter here. Activities and other events are similar, and the communication is aimed at making life easier for busy parents. It's perhaps a small thing, but indicative of the approach of the school, and it's created another part of a wonderful experience. In short, St. Hilda's is a truly special place. It has academic excellence combined with a warm and loving atmosphere. It has world-class teachers with deep expertise who have a true love of learning and the children they teach. And it has a wonderful community of people who value kindness, dedication, and the joy of learning.

We get frequent feedback about his progress, with lots of practical suggestions about how we can support him. I feel like the teachers are really working with us to help him succeed, and that they really "get" him--and us. Now that he is in first grade and the work is a little more academic, he seems to be thriving with the additional structure of a desk and a uniform. Our daughter is now in the nursery (3s) program and so far, we are equally pleased. She is very different from her brother, but she is comfortable, happy, and looks forward to school. Doesn't hurt that the classrooms are beautiful and full of fun things to do! In many ways this school feels like a throwback, in the very best way. There is a wholesomeness and sincerity about the students and families, and it doesn't feel like the program is trying to push them into too much too soon. I feel like the faculty is incredibly thoughtful and smart about what kids need at the various stages in their development. So far, so good, and we are looking forward to many more happy years here!

Except paying for classes I take I don't pay or get asked to pay or am forced or pressured to pay anything. Do understand that donations would help keep the place running but it isn't something pushed or forced on you. When I took the New Muslim class I received a free bag with books, a bottle for cleaning and a beautiful prayer rug. At some point I received prayer beads. Get free coffee or tea and snacks every class. I am also taking an Arabic learning class now. Both teachers I have had are super great. Patient and kind. Most staff there that I have met have been super nice and kind. They have events regularly. I haven't had chance to go because of work but insha'Allah I will go soon. They are great and I am glad I went as I was scared to all those months ago based on that review from 2 years ago. Thankfully I listened to my gut and went. Understand there are different schools of Islam that some follow such as hanafi, maliki, shafi'i and hanbali which are Sunni and there are others including shia Muslims. But just because there may be some differences such as if when you pray the placement of your hands. Doesn't mean we can't all be together and respect each other. If you are new do not worry about picking a school to follow. Learn what you can and eventually when you are ready and know which school works for you then fine but at your own time and place. Haven't been pressured to do anything here. The teacher for the new Muslim class would describe any such differences in an unbiased way. He also really want into subjects that we as reverts want answered but not many will go into sensitive topics. Ahhh I wrote a lot and wish I could keep writing to address any issues or doubt's some may have but you just have to go and see for yourself.

I always prefer earlier service. I especially love the praise and worship sessions here! Several students took us around and showed us all the classrooms including Nursery (full day and half day - 2 separate classes). We were able to ask questions directly to the students, speak with the teachers and see the teacher interact with children. She also mentioned to us that several 8th graders were accepted at top high schools in New York including Townsend Harris High School and Stuyvesant High School. This school has up to 20 students per class. They have an early drop off and late pick up program, but they do not offer lunch. Parents can sign up children to take different classes (tennis, hockey, etc) during the after school program.

The teachers are very well-qualified, responsive to the children (they "meet the kids where they are") and assign an appropriate / varying levels of homework.  The small size of the very diverse student body (less than 400 kids from early childhood (3 years old) to eighth grade allows each student to know one another and to be known by the teachers/administrators.  There are never any "back to school nerves" at our house!  Excellent music program, afterschool enrichment classes + afterschool care available.  Though we have very good public schools in the area, there is no comparison to the quality of what SSCA provides.  Easy to access on F, G train (lots of kids travel on public transportation/school bus).  Kids have time outside either in an "open streets" access or via a short walk to Prospect Park.  Very devoted parents/alumni.  Current 8th grade class has received a small fortune in scholarships to top Catholic + specialized high schools.  A gem of a school.  Check it out!

Parents beware of Ms Larkin - This place is scary…read more I enrolled my son in Kindergarten and was initially thrilled that he was going to get a Catholic education. He is a good 5 year old and has struggles with going to the bathroom at school. His teacher was initially sympathetic to our situation and was working with us to get it resolved but then Ms Larkin intervened. We were called into Ms Larkins office where she acted like dictator with zero compassion or flexibility. She demanded we get him fully potty trained and provided no resources to help. Following our meeting, she sent us a note saying our son could not attend the school until he had no accidents. We sent a note telling her the steps we were taking including pulling him from school to get intensive training. When we returned him to school, she systematically instituted a program of intimidation to force her will on us. She went directly after him instructing the teachers and staff to pull him from class anytime he had an accident and place him in isolation where had to sit in his own excrement until we picked him up - this happened multiple times and caused my son significant distress. We then pulled him for two weeks to get more intensive potty training that involved hiring an expert hoping this would resolve the situation. When we returned him school he had another accident because the program included a laxative regime and they pulled him again making him sit in a room alone for 2 hours without changing him - I almost cried at the pain they put this little boy through. Ms Larkin personally oversaw all of this instructing the staff to do her dirty work while they ruthlessly went directly after him with no regard to his education or feelings. She also called my wife after I sent her an email complaint trying to turn the situation back in us while using intimidation and leverage over us as working parents. I have never experienced such thuggish behavior in my entire life l and no less from a Catholic institution that claims to teach the Catholic faith. My son cried at home for months as we went through this trauma and it impacted all aspects of our family life. I want others to know the type of people they could be dealing with if their children have issues. Ms Larkin systematically leveraged the full force of her staff to go after a 5 year old boy and us as his parents with the ruthless purpose of making us bend to her will. It is sad, as a lifelong Catholic who just wanted his son have a Catholic education, to see this school and associated church stray so far from its stated purpose. I feel I need to write this so that others understand the type of behavior my 5 year old son and wife experienced at the hands of Ms Larkin and her staff. My only hope is that others will read this and understand what they are getting into or lodge similar complaints if they had issues like we had because this must be addressed.
