Great Catholic High School. Is it still all girls? Are there still Catholics in the neighborhood?

This review is based on the open house I attended last fall for Nursery (Pre-K 3). The open house was very well organized. Several students took us around and showed us all the classrooms including Nursery (full day and half day - 2 separate classes). We were able to ask questions directly to the students, speak with the teachers and see the teacher interact with children. At the end of the open house, the Principal shared the school's vision, mission and goals. She also mentioned to us that several 8th graders were accepted at top high schools in New York including Townsend Harris High School and Stuyvesant High School. This school has up to 20 students per class. They have an early drop off and late pick up program, but they do not offer lunch. St. Saviour Catholic Academy - Religious Schools Near Me - Slope, New York

Our three boys currently attend SSCA (21/22 school year), under the effective leadership of principal Sue Walsh.  Oldest (7th Grade) has been a student since nursery! The teachers are very well-qualified, responsive to the children (they "meet the kids where they are") and assign an appropriate / varying levels of homework.  The small size of the very diverse student body (less than 400 kids from early childhood (3 years old) to eighth grade allows each student to know one another and to be known by the teachers/administrators.  There are never any "back to school nerves" at our house!  Excellent music program, afterschool enrichment classes + afterschool care available.  Though we have very good public schools in the area, there is no comparison to the quality of what SSCA provides.  Easy to access on F, G train (lots of kids travel on public transportation/school bus).  Kids have time outside either in an "open streets" access or via a short walk to Prospect Park.  Very devoted parents/alumni.  Current 8th grade class has received a small fortune in scholarships to top Catholic + specialized high schools.  A gem of a school.  Check it out! read more

Wonderful school in Park Slope. I have seen many great changes in this school since our son started attending school over 2 years ago. They have a rigorous curriculum (play based at least from Nursery to Kindergarten). By the end of PreK our son was able to read and write the alphabet, all the numbers, his name, tell a story that was read to his class and so much more. I looked at the 4th grade ELA and math results and the school did a lot better than the national average for sure!) Nursery and Preschool students take a nap but not Kindergarten students. The school started offering warm organic lunches from Red Rabbit, which saves me time in the morning! Even if you decide to pack your child's lunch, you can take a day off on Friday as it's pizza Friday! The school has an early drop off and late pick up program, so your child can technically be in school from 7:30AM to 6PM. The after school program is ran by Ms Katie and you can register your child for enrichment classes such as sports sampling, drumming and cooking. The after school program has an app (iPhone and most likely Android too) that you can install on your phone, so you know where to pick up your child in the afternoon/evening. Amazing on all levels! Small class size (less than 20 students per class, even smaller for Nursery classes) Excellent and caring teachers who provide great and constructive feedback on your child progress, strengths and weaknesses, and what they are going to do to help your child succeed. They also have a great early bird program, which allows parents to drop off their child(ren) at 7:30AM and an after school program with extracurricular activities until 6PM. read more

My child is currently a student at Saint Saviour--and has been for the past two years. Saint Saviour has completed my dream for my child--where church, school and home are teaching my child the same thing. My child is surrounded by a wonderful set of adults who actually care about kids. The kids are more than a score on an exam. The teachers are very responsive to parent concerns.They have early drop off and extended day activities. The PTA is very active. There is a diverse student body present--which reflects city and the country. There is a brand new science lab, the gym has been updated and so many more upgrades. I read reviews that people didn't like that the school doesn't have a cafeteria--but I like being able to monitor what my child eats. I do understand the concerns. However, I would not leave the 90% I have at Saviour just to go somewhere that only has the 10% that was missing. My child wants to complete the 8th grade there. My child does not want to leave. and--to top it off--Saint Saviour is miles ahead of the city and charter schools on exam results! Nothing beats Saint Saviour! My son has attended this school for the last 5 yrs. We were so fortunate to find this school after having a bad experience with another catholic school ( Queen of all saints). The teachers here are very caring, professional and seem to love what they do. They are always looking for progressive and innovative ways to keep the children engaged. The school is also super diverse. A lot of the students seem to be from various different backgrounds and ethnicities. Although we are moving away so my son will no longer be attending, If we decide to come back to NY, I will come right back to this school to sign him up again. read more

As my daughter finishes her nursery year here, I have to share what a wonderful and warm experience it has been right from the start. Starting with the school tour where we able to meet with the principal, hear about the school's teaching philosophy as well as some extensive Q&A. Also impressed with the small class size - just 10 students in a class with 2 teachers - which allows for a special relationship with each child. Both teachers are warm and professional and create the perfect introduction to formal education for the children. Both teachers seem to really understand and value the unique nature of each of their students and work with them on that basis. In short, I could not feel more comfortable leaving my child in their capable hands everyday. The approach is play based inside the classroom with lots of time to run around in the gym, the courtyard, weekly music class and the occasional "field trip" to the park or market. Overall, the school has struck a nice balance with great family events for all ages without feeling like there is an obligatory event too often - specifically the fall festival, breakfast with Santa, school auction and end of year party. As a working mother, this is very much appreciated. Lastly the other parents and the parents association in general are equally welcoming and approachable which makes being part of the St. Saviour community even more enjoyable. I feel fortunate to have found such a great place to start my daughter's education. read more
