My daughter is in her third year of high school at Greenwood school in the Arlington area. This is…read morea school for special children who may learn differently and require closer, caring support. The classes are small. The curriculum is challenging. I'm very pleased with their new Principal. Their Music program is the best. It is a bit pricey... but worth it. Recommend!

After spending time in the public school system since Pre-K, along with a stint at a private school…read morewhich has since closed, my twin sons, now 22 years old, began attending Greenwood in the 6th grade. Both of my sons had completed an assessment for admission to Greenwood a couple of years prior, but did not meet the requirements at that time. I was disappointed, because I'd heard great things about Greenwood. Alas, Greenwood knew what they were doing. My boys just weren't ready yet. That's the kind of caring you will find at Greenwood! Any school could enroll students just to fill seats. But the head of school (Mrs Connell, now retired) at the time knew my sons would be in over their heads if they started Greenwood when we first applied. My mother was a teacher. So I've always been acutely aware of what teachers do and have nothing but respect for teachers! I certainly appreciate and wanted a good education for my sons, but trying to find and finance it as a single Mom was not easy. One day, though, the stars aligned, my boys were accepted at Greenwood, and with the help of the McKay Scholarship and financial aid through the generosity of others, my children were where they needed to be, to be their best. Of course, not every student will be a perfect fit at every school. But if your child has an IEP, has learning differences and could benefit from educators who understand that; as well as smaller class sizes - I urge you to check out Greenwood. I will forever be grateful to the faculty & staff at Greenwood... For treating my sons as individuals...for providing an optimum environment...for helping them grow in numerous aspects. I could go on! Greenwood is much more than just a private school. There is a difference at Greenwood. If you are searching for a positive change and a better situation for your child, please consider Greenwood.

It is incredibly concerning to see this Academy remove a 2 year old from the school for…read morebiting-something that is widely recognized as developmentally normal behavior at that age. Toddlers are still learning how to communicate, regulate emotions, and interact with others. Biting, while not ideal, is a common phase that one would think that trained childcare professionals/ teachers should be prepared to handle with appropriate strategies, patience and guidance. This situation raises serious questions about the staffs training and their ability to manage age-appropriate behaviors. A quality daycare/Academy should have clear polices in place not only to address behaviors like biting, but also to support both the child exhibiting the behavior and the children affected by it. Simply removing the child suggests a lack of resources, understanding, or the willingness to work through typical development challenges. The easy solution is to call the parents to pick up their child. Parents should feel confident that their childcare provider is equipped to create a safe, supportive environment for all children, if your child is bitten, it is absolutely valid to ask what measures are being taken to prevent incidents and teach appropriate behavior. Likewise, if a daycare/school's response to normal toddler behavior is exclusion rather than education and intervention that's something every parent should take seriously.

Warning to Parents of Children with Autism in Jacksonville, Florida…read more Stay far away from The Broach School. I provided the school with everything they requested for my son's enrollment -- including his ABA treatment plan and his IEP, which clearly outlined all of his behaviors and symptoms. On top of that, I personally described his needs and challenges in detail so they would be fully aware of what to expect. Despite knowing all of this, they went ahead with enrollment, accepted the scholarship funding, and kept him in school -- until he displayed behaviors. At that point, instead of supporting him, they decided they could no longer handle him and expelled him after just 13 days. Now I'm being told they're allowed to keep a quarter of his state scholarship for students with unique abilities, simply because he was enrolled for at least 10 days. What makes this worse is that he displayed behaviors before that 10-day mark, which makes me feel like they intentionally kept him enrolled long enough to bill the scholarship, knowing they wouldn't actually support him. Why should they be paid more than what they actually worked for my child? Why are schools allowed to advertise that they specialize in children with autism -- when they clearly cannot handle autistic children? My son is 8 years old, nonverbal, and has Level 3 autism. I went above and beyond to explain all of this before enrollment, but it didn't matter. During enrollment, the staff seemed caring and kind. Now that I am requesting they not bill for the full quarter -- so that I might have some of those scholarship funds to find another school -- their attitude has completely changed. They've become nasty and are hiding behind what they can "legally bill." As a parent of a child with severe autism, I already face daily struggles. To then deal with schools like this -- who exploit vulnerable children, parents, and state funding -- is devastating. I will continue to speak out about The Broach School. No parent should ever have to go through this.

They definitely get them ready for school. He was never scared or unhappy to go there. He had a great teacher (Miss D) who had a firm but caring way (he needed that!). He is well adjusted and socialized and loved his teachers, including subs or rotating scheduled ones. We were kept well informed of any needs for improvement so we could coach him and work with them to help with social concerns. I would have to run back to his classroom to get a forgotten hat, coat, etc and when walking through the classrooms I couldn't help but notice how fresh it smelled. You could tell the end of day was dedicated daily to CLEANING. They wouldn't let him stay if he was sick. (I had him at a private daycare previously that didn't even inform me until I went to pick him up that he had a 104 fever and was bright pink *AND* other children were playing around him: NOT ALLENS, ( this was at Casper, Stephanie Family Care). He was isolated, up front and not around other children when I came to get him. They even called me with a "Hey, he has had a few episodes of diarrhea, one more and you will have to come get him. It's helpful to a working mom to put in a notice instead of just dropping trough. Honestly though, he was rarely sick at this daycare. We were worried since we hear about sick kids at daycare spreading, but it seemed he only caught stuff from us, not the other way around. We still use them for holidays when school is closed and they are very reasonable. I would recommend them to anyone who asked. They may not be the most modern, but I felt secure (cameras everywhere, Grandma got questioned thoroughly until they got to know her) and didn't have any bad "Mom vibes".
