The outside of the hotel is very beautiful and inside, the hotel is being refurbished. I stayed in a family room which we got at a reduced price because the room was quite outdated and due to be refurbished. The room was large and had a very comfy bed. The room had a great layout; the two single beds were further down the room and were separated by a curtain giving more privacy. Our deal included breakfast and I enjoyed the choice; fry-ups, toast, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and pastries. Unfortunately the croissants I had were warm on the outside and a tad soggy in the middle. Breakfast was good but the quality wasn't amazing. At night, you could buy a drink at the bar and sit beside the cosy fire on comfy sofas and chairs which made the hotel a winner in my eyes as I hate being stuck in a hotel room all night. Gin lovers will be happy to know that they have a huge list of gins - there's a little greenhouse in the bar area where they show all the gins they have on offer. Outside the hotel, they had chickens and a bee hive as well as an outdoor giant chess board and small golf area. In the hotel, they have a kids play group and you can hire bikes. If the quality of breakfast had been better, I would've given it 5 stars.

But we really needed a few…read morequiet days in the countryside away from the big city for a more authentic Scottish experience. And we found it at Traquair! Coming here was one of the best decisions we made. Just south of the charming town of Peebles, you'll find the oldest continually-inhabited residence in all of Scotland. The left side of the home dates to the 1100s! There are only three rooms to rent and we ended up having the whole property to ourselves! From April to September, the home can be toured by the public from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closing at 4:00 p.m. in October and 3:00 p.m. in November before winter thoroughly sets in. Within the house are some fascinating artifacts, including the bed in which Mary Queen of Scots stayed, the crib where she kept her son, future King James VI, the oldest mural outside of a church in all of Europe, and one of the world's first calculators attributed to mathematician John Napier. You'll find a restaurant on the grounds open during the day, and a complex hedge maze in the backyard. Certainly a highlight is the miles of pathways covering the grounds in the forest, offering stunning views of the mountains, river, and woods. There is even a chapel, a gift shop, and a brewery. Each day at closing time, the employees depart and the few remaining tourists are asked to leave. The restaurant and museum are closed and your family has the entire grounds to themselves, with only the adorable housekeeper Katie staying behind. You select your breakfast on a paper menu and submit the response in the evening. You're free to roam the entire grounds, watching the grazing sheep and the resident peacock, and simply enjoying total peace. They do have free Wi-Fi and television and a sitting room with a fireplace open to guests. The rooms maintain that old world charm, but the remodeled bathrooms have all the modern conveniences with a wonderful shower. Driving into the town of Peebles is necessary for dinner, although the best restaurant in town Coltman's requires reservations. Returning to the quiet countryside for the night, you'll enjoy isolation and the ultimate getaway. Our family highly recommends this stay!

The hotel is located about 10 min drive, outside of Peebles, towards Galashiels and just beside the main road. Also, only 40 min from Edinburgh. You won't be able to miss that large white building, when passing, in the middle of nowhere! It might need a bit of colour on the the outside or at least some flowers to pep it up a bit, so that it's appearance is not only one of a boring pile of stone. Inside it's quite comfortable. Anyway, plenty of parking. Best to upgrade your room to a superior room with views towards the golf course. This will definitely guarantee you a peaceful sleep :-) The interior of the hotel is modern and the rooms and public areas clean. I think there are about 99 rooms. It's main attractions/appeal are the spa/ swimming pool and golf course with a putting green and small driving range. Having said this, I was very much impressed by the 3 course dinner, which normally would cost you £35. You have several menu choices and all ingredients are mainly locally sourced and fresh. My gnocchi in cheese sauce was delicious, not too strong. As a dessert I went for the 3 scoops of creamy ice cream. There are 2 bars, one restaurant and a lounge area where you can relax and enjoy your afternoon tea that's also included in the Groupon voucher, if offered. The staff was very friendly. The bedrooms are very bright with large windows. Mainly, the beds are double beds, but can be divided into twins on request. If there is no water in the room, ask for it. The tea and coffee accessories are stored in the cupboard. It's a lovely relaxing place within a peaceful area of the Borderlands with lots to discover in its surroundings, be it with car or on foot. I will be back!
