Today I spoke with Mechelle in admissions. First, I explained I am not a first responder and asked…read moreif Deer Hollow was only for first responders. Mechelle said no, not at all. She answered some of my questions, and then asked me to describe my symptoms. She then asked what exactly I had experienced that I thought was traumatic. I said it was related to a relationship. She pushed for more information about what exactly happened. I explained it was related to SA. Mechelle then explained that their program is for people with actual, severe trauma like watching people die, and that it served people who had been through really intense and awful things, not people like me. She also said I probably couldn't handle their program regardless because I was being cagey talking about what exactly happened to me with her. She said the program involves talking about triggering experiences frequently and at length, and it wouldn't be a fit since I was having a hard time talking about the events with her. She also said in their program, I would need to listen to people in groups talk about horrible experiences, not like mine, which I probably wouldn't be able to handle hearing. She then referred me to a women's program that is not in my network. I was grateful to learn early in the process that the program is not helpful for or welcoming to people like me.

DO NOT GO HERE FOR HELP! FROM ONE FIREFIGHTER AND VETERAN TO ANOTHER, DO NOT GO HERE FOR HELP!…read moreTHEY LEFT ME HIGH AND DRY! Thank God for the VA crisis hot line, and good friends, otherwise, I would not be here to type this. DO NOT GO HERE FOR HELP. GO TO GOOGLE AND MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL OF THE 1 STAR REVIEWS. THEY ARE ALL REMINISCENT OF HOW I WAS TREATED AT DEER HOLLOW. You may be fortunate enough to be treated well there, but if you are the 'one off person' who isn't, then you are left out to dry. Would you want to do that to yourself or a loved one with a mental health crisis or an addiction concern? Not me, never again. 1. If you value any shred of your freedom, do not go here. 2. If you have a life outside of deer hollow, say a daughter to call, a lawyer to speak with, or anything else similar to that, do not go here. 3. If you want your trauma increased, please, by all means, go here. They are more than willing to do it. 4. They will not ask you what is going on if they feel you are being 'destabilized', or if you are having a bad moment because they told you they would have a phone for you at a certain time to call your attorney, but, the person who is supposed to help you with that is not there, and when you say you will take your phone and leave if they do not have it by the time you need it, they will take it as 'adverse'. 5. If you are having a bad day, they will not ask you why you are having a bad day, but will interpret it as you being 'destabilized'. 6. Once they have determined you are 'destabilized' or are 'destabilizing', in the name of "Good ethics". Will bring you outside, have a conversation about it with you, and tell you they have already arranged a new place for you to stay. (after having been there almost 2 weeks). Then if you get angry because of this 'new news' (with only 10 mins to process the info) they will promptly tell you you cannot stay, even if the bed at the facility that they arranged for you is no longer there. 7. They will not offer you a new place of your choice, and mind you, all choices are made for you. 8. This was an awful place that made me fend for myself, and spend money on a hotel the evening I was kicked out. Mind you, I drove across the country without a job, and without a home, to get help THERE! and I was removed because of two things, and NO ONE asked me what was going on. NOT. A. SOUL. they made their determination based only on their interpretation of events, and kicked me to the CURB. Now I am STILL jobless, STILL homeless with no place to go, and absolutely NO HELP RECEIVED. ADD THAT TO YOUR TRAUMA TIMELINE!GO T DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO TO DEER HOLLOW. FROM ONE VET TO ANOTHER, AND FROM ONE FIREFIGHTER TO ANOTHER, STEER FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. GO ANY PLACE BUT HERE. OH, AND PS, GOOD LUCK IF YOU DON'T WANT A THERAPIST OF THE SAME SEX BECAUSE YOU WERE TRAUMATIZED BY SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. GOOD FREAKING LUCK.

Three months later at family week we are able to talk, sit on the same sofa, and he's apologized for all that happened and will express love. The family support groups are very supportive. You don't feel like you're all alone or that your child is the only one. The staff on the therapy side have been very communicative and supportive in putting in place plans to advance. The kids even enjoy just about all of the staff when they are being honest. I've seen kids go from being alone and unable to communicate to being able to communicate and hold themselves accountable. They also have a school program the kids are enrolled into so they do not miss any school. This also helps parents work with the school to get this type of treatment paid for when insurance will not. The one thing I wish was better was communication with the medical professionals. We have been trying to get to speak to the doctor about changes in his medication and it's been impossible even with the therapist seeing them a message each week during the weekly session. Overall we have been down this road before but this time it seems like he's actually getting skills and progress that will last.

While there were aspects of my time at Youth Care that were useful for me, my overall experience was horrid. In February Of 2001 my parents where at their wits end and talked to an educational consultant who recommended this facility. I was skipping school, running away, and in and out of psychiatric hospitals. My parents hired a bounty hunter company to surprise me in the middle of the night in my bedroom while I was sleeping, handcuff me, and put me on an airplane headed to Utah. This was a direct recommendation of the Youth Care facility. I was at this facility for 2.5 years. The treatment team "didn't feel comfortable" graduating me. In the summer of 2003 the treatment team told my parents "there was nothing more they could do for me." Three months later, my parents finally pulled me out. I developed a very hopeless and pessimistic attitude towards my future and my life while in this place. Phone calls were monitored and staff would hang the phone up for me if I wanted to talk to my parents about anything negative having to do with Youth Care. I roomed with skinheads, violent kids, and other troubled youth. One of my most vivid memories was a scandal involving one of my friends and a staff member who made my friend walk naked in front of him at least a couple times. In addition, there were two different instances I was made aware of where 2 separate adult male staff members groomed and sexually pursued a 14-year-old female patient, and in another case of 16-year-old female patient. In both of these cases, the staff members were fired when the scandals were brought to light, but no legal action was ever pursued against these offenders. It seemed to me at the time, and still seems to me that Youth Care didn't want that sort of publicity. I believe that they tried to keep it hush-hush as the police where never involved/called but the kids affected (my peers) had to meet at least once with lawyers representing Youth Care privately. I developed unhealthy eating habits which turned into an eating disorder that I still have to this day, and a life long resentment for my family for sending me to such a awful place. I do not recommend this place to anyone. I have gone through years of family counseling with my parents to get to a point where we can communicate effectively and lovingly again. When someone asks me how my high school experience was, I don't have much to say, because I felt like I was in juvenile prison, as my experience at Youth Care was very similar to that. Lastly, I would like to point out as I am looking through these reviews that it is apparent to me that most of the positive reviews of Youth Care are paid promotion. That's right, you can pay a PR company to leave positive reviews for your company to offset the many negative reviews from actual patients. -David

Ones of note are Dante, Obama, Chelsea, Rebecca, and Ricky. They listen to concerns and try to make the best decisions for each client. Like all facilities, some clients will not like the rules, but they will actually listen to your concerns. Shaun in admissions is supportive and amazing.
