Ditchling Tea Rooms - Sussex high tea with GIANT scone!!

Ditchling Tea Rooms certainly win the prize for the world's largest scone, easily mistakable for a…read moreloaf of bread (see picture)! I came here with a GroupOn for Sussex High Tea for two. On arrival, we were told we could order any sandwich from the main menu (toasted or normal), choose a slice of cake from those displayed in the window, and have a choice of plain or fruit scone, served with jam and clotted cream of course! Plus a pot of tea of our choice. Even for a girl with a mighty appetite such as myself, this was a phenomenal amount of food and I had to admit defeat before even starting work on the scone (doggy bags were provided though, so no real loss!) I chose a prawn and lettuce sandwich on the most delicious thick-cut granary bread and a slice of lemon drizzle cake. The food was presented on individual cake stands and was delicious, although the cake was slightly dry on the outside. The tea room itself is in a beautiful 17th century building, all wonky floors, flint walls and dark wooden beams. Apparently it was a slaughter house up until the 1920's. It has three main rooms for eating in, plus a lovely garden that I imagine would be beautiful in the summer. As well as tea and cakes, they also do a number of main meals and serve roast dinners on a Sunday. They also have a take away counter which seemed very popular. Come here for tea, but bring with you a hearty appetite! Handy tip - if you want mobile reception and Internet, you will need to stand by the wall at the bottom of the garden with your phone in the air!

The tea was beautiful, delicious sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam plus a very good selections of divine little cakes and strawberries dipped in chocolate. We had a selection of teas to choose from, I had English breakfast tea, Susie had peppermint tea and we both got 3 cups of tea from our individual pots. The service was excellent and before we were served our cream tea we were asked by the very sweet waitress if we had any food allergies which we did not, where do you get that type of service in other establishments. We sat in the tea garden which was lovely, tables were very clean, the waterfall made you feel cool and each table had lovely large sun shades to keep you from getting to hot. I would highly recommend the tea rooms with their lovely 40's vibe and gorgeous background 40's music. Beautiful environment. It is 5 stars for eveything.

Great patio to sit on during nice weather. We ordered the chocolate pancakes as well as the berry and cream and both were delish! Don't forget to try the chorizo.

Since then, we always look out for a Bills throughout the country on our travels. Three of us arrived, unreserved, for a table. OK, lets say we are 'oldies', and proud of it. The restaurant was heaving which is pleasing to see with this era of coronavirus. We were asked to wait while a table was cleared, cleaned and relaid. Meanwhile a younger couple with their family arrived and were shown immediately to a table, UPSTAIRS. Obviously, the young 'front of the house' lady had decided we couldn't have made it up the stairs. She was probably right and we were grateful. Within minutes our table was ready. A wonderfully comfortable booth. Our orders of full English, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and eggs Benedict were brilliant as was the coffee. It is also great to receive freshly squeezed orange juice and not the thin, watery, 'juice'. Service was second to none by two young ladies. Fast, efficient, friendly yet professional. Pricing is more than reasonable. I am always apprehensive about the 10% service charge. I have no objection to paying it as I would, for good service, leave a 10% tip but does it go to the staff. So many companies now put it into their profits.

This is a humble independent cafe selling decent coffee and excellent home cooked food. The owner Elina hails from the Oseta region of south Russia and has brought some of the local cooking knowledge with her to breezy Brighton, and you can tell. The food is exquisite, cooked to perfection and the menu is packed with inventive recipes. Specials change regularly and there is plenty of choice on the regular menu. I recommend the Oseta's House, a delightful dish of scrambled egg with halloumi, tomato, and spinach... it really is to die for! Coffee is good (to this writer's taste buds anyway, but I'm no coffee aficionado) and there are plenty of other choices on the drinks menu. Honestly, if you haven't been here you need to get down immediately. Right now. Drop what you're doing this instant. You won't regret it.

I had the avocado and smoked salmon on sourdough the first time and the fennel sausage and lentil stew the second time. I also had a brilliant fresh lemon and ginger tea and the staff were brilliant - really chatty and friendly, but not invasive. It was the right balance between informal and professional and I really appreciated it. I even left with a slice of Guinness cake (which was to die for). I really love this little spot, and certainly will be back to try the meat and cheese dishes.
