Went here on the recommendation of three locals after working a basketball game. I misheard them…read moreat first; I thought they said "Tempe" and we were looking for a Mexican restaurant. Anyhow, we arrived and elected to sit at the bar versus a booth. Took a couple minutes to get noticed and we were asked to sit at the other end of the bar due to some clutter... Prices are very reasonable at this establishment. A flight was $7.50...if you were in WDM or Waukee, you would probably be looking at double that. They also brew their own beer and cider here; I'm not sure why that's not advertised heavier. Its called the "Gamble Block Brewery". I had Fear the Beard, the Baja Lager, the Maple Pumpkin Ale, and a cinnamon apple cider. The Maple pumpkin ale was delicious--the maple definitely hit on the back end. I was not a fan of the cider--they used a rather tart apple. The Fear the Beard (comparable to Blue Moon) and the Baja lager were OK. For food, I had the chicken tender basket with a 1/2 order of Texas Fries. I actually thought the ranch seasoning detracted from this dish--the queso was quite good and the bacon was plentiful. The downside to getting "sampler" versions of items was none of the accompaniments were included. My friend who got a full order of the Texas Fries was given sour cream with his food--mine did not. Also, on the beer sampler fruit wedges are served with the full size versions but not on the flight. The chicken tenders were very good and had the right breading/chicken ratio. The buffalo sauce packed a punch but was not obnoxiously spicy. The ranch that came with it was very good and was clearly made in-house. More of a 3.5 star review.

After a long day of driving we decided to stop for the night and ended up eating at The Ranch. We…read moreboth opted to have the Salad Bar for dinner and it didn't disappoint. Lots of variety and the chili was very good. (The salad bar came with 2 soup options). The waitress was very nice and checked on us several times. I loved the decor, very Ranch with country but in a good way. We would definitely go back if we're ever that way again.

That apprehension was short lived as I watched watch party after party get escorted quickly to their table. Our waitress showed us to our table and immediately took our drink order. The drinks were delivered in a short time and our breakfast order was taken. We LOVED our waitress. She was very personable and friendly but even more than that she helped us navigate the menu to best suit our "custom" requests. The wait for food was a little lengthier but we enjoyed a nice time chatting and people watching a bit. The restaurant was absolutely packed due to softball tournaments this weekend but the team at The Ranch seemed to be handling it pretty well. Our food arrived and it was all absolutely delicious. I rarely can eat a full plate of breakfast but I sure did clean my plate this time. I had hashbrowns that were cooked nicely browned and crispy in the edges. My over medium egg was also cooked perfectly. The sausage gravy was tasty but I do think it was canned which was slightly disappointing but considering all the positives it surely didn't dim the experience.

It was super thick, and ate more like a chowder. It would be the kind of comfort food you'd want to eat after shovelling the sidewalk this winter. Very good, stick to your ribs, and warm up your bones soup. I ordered their 3 Brisket Sliders, and they were delicious, their special in house made BBQ Sauce really set the sliders off. I need to see if they will sell their Special BBQ sauce, as I have never eaten any sauce that tasted better! My friend ordered the Lasagna, and he received a large portion, which he raved about the flavor! With his meal came a loaf of personal sized Italian Bread with butter which he said tasted very good too! I ordered the Brisket sandwich served on Marbled Rye bread, with Mozarella Cheese. I spread some of the BBQ Sauce on the sandwich and it tasted as good as the sliders! We were impressed with our meal selections, the waitresses were helpful and cheerful, offered suggestions as what to order, and answered any questions we had. When we left the wait staff cheerfully bid us farewell! We were both happy with our dining experience there, and would gladly come back and eat there in the future. A previous review said that if you were within 20 miles of Sheldon, Ia. this was a place to go to! We drove from Cherokee, Ia. and will gladly return, it's worth driving even 50 miles from Sheldon!

It seems over-priced at first, but since the portions are so large, you take half home for another meal. Three of us ate and we all enjoyed our meals. Plus the decor was fun. Please give it a try. Went back again and had an amazing wedge salad, which was recommended by someone in town. It's not on the menu anymore, but they accommodated me. So glad they did. It was really filling. I saw the homemade cherry cobblers but had no room. Will go back on Sunday morning for their breakfasts.
