I was surrounded by such positive, welcoming people of all ages. Throughout the night, we sang karaoke, played cards, shot pool and listened to good music. What really stood out to me was how safe, inclusive, and comfortable the environment felt. Everyone was so kind and genuine. But what truly touched my heart was how the community embraced my brother, who is special needs. There was no judgment only acceptance, laughter, and open arms. For the first time in a long time, I didn't feel like I had to be on guard, watching to make sure he was being treated with respect because everyone just welcomed. It was a relaxing night filled with connection and joy. I would absolutely come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, warm, and safe space. Thank you for such an unforgettable expeience.

The organization for which I work recently held an event at Little Black Pearl (LBP). The support…read moreand service we received was beyond stellar! LBP provided the space, catered the food (via their onsite cafe, Carver 47), connected us to amazing balloon and floral vendors, and provided other accoutrements (e.g., tables and chairs, table coverings, a stage, sound and tech support, package management). LBP's one-stop shop especially helpful given that our planning team resided outside of Chicago. There is so much to applaud from the experience: the warm and inviting space exuded elegance; the feast was as beautiful as it was delicious; and the LBP team's interactions with us (from planning to completion) was the epitome of grace and hospitality. They accommodated every request and did so with an exceptional level of excellence. When we asked that the menu include a vegetarian and Halal dish, they ensured guests had multiple options. When we requested assistance erecting our banner, they took on the task of assembling the entire structure, even machine washing and drying it when they noticed a stain. Compared to other spaces we considered (and have used in the past) across the city, LBP's offerings and support stood head and shoulders above and their love was palpable in their attention to details. That they have a heart-centered mission and work in support of youth and community was tasty icing on an already amazing cake. Thank you, Little Black Pearl team, for making our event a world-class experience!

Cooking Canvas really holds a special place in my family and I heart because I remember when it first opened and we were so excited to attend our first local cooking class event that didn't involve us having to drive all the way downtown or to the north side. So we've attended classes here and hosted many private events here. Always a great time. BYOB and music.

If I ever want to have another party of this type, I'd definitely come back. Perfect place for a date night or kids cooking Party, too. Overall, great experience!!

I've lived in the same house all of my life. I pay my bills on the computer paperlessly and I've got to spend all kinds of time getting printouts of all kinds of bills every single year. Some of it is some pretty personal stuff. They took copies of my bank statements showing what I've purchased and where. What if some of that was embarrassing stuff? If I was an 'undocumented immigrant' I wouldn't have to go through this. Why can't the school get a printout of the tax rolls that show who has or hasn't transferred ownership of their property? I have to do this every year and undocumented immigrants don't have to do it at all. The burden should be on the school district to show that I don't have residency there rather than on me to prove that I do... and a drivers license or passport isn't good enough. I'm tired of being treated like a third class citizen by Consolidated District 230.

Alright, this is a more "censored" review than my original one which got removed for violation…read more Please don't enroll your special ed. child to the Communication Development program at Andrew if they've had a toxic relationship with a certain student at the previous school because I've had a similar horrible experience in all my 4 years there. I had to deal with an autistic male student named "Timothy E. Kelly Jr." aka "TK". He constantly intimidated, scared and harassed me every time we saw each other (by smiling and waving only at me). He has a pointed look on his face, his eyes are very far apart, is hunchbacked, has a voice always sounding like inhaling helium, and is an alien looking thing. I was always mentally, verbally and emotionally abused by that student which was extremely dehumanizing. Almost every time I had an issue with him and trying to protect myself from him, CD staff always framed me by written me up, the deans blamed and accused me for bullying him, punished me with detentions, and they abused me by not believing me, never letting me speak up and taking that student's side, and I felt too weak to talk out to them that I was innocent. The social worker, Abigail Kellerman also offered me privs of watching movies in her office if I don't misbehave around him but I refused 'cause it wasn't my fault and I was the one being abused, but she still didn't believe me. I used to be super anxious every night about seeing him (even a little) and often cried myself to sleep, and have nightmares and flashbacks that would make me wake up screaming! I even often thought of running away and committing su*c*de. The reason why I always felt mental pain when he smiled and waved at me is because he was forcing me to still be friends with him which I never wanted to be again. He just couldn't get over with that, and ignoring him has never worked for me. Everyone has got the right to be friends with whoever they want. Mrs. Kellerman even snapped "I DON'T CARE!" at me at one point due to a chalk activity incident I've done all because of seeing TK with me! I've graduated from this HS in 2020, which was the year Covid-19 hit, and felt lucky that I didn't need to graduate with him, until we both started going back in person to the Transition Program in Orland! I am a strong and friendly young woman, and sure don't want any other students to go through what I've gone through. I always hate taking deep breaths and being told to calm down because they are triggers to me, and aren't enough for me to solve any problem. Reporting TK to the police was never even an option because I was scared that they would doubt me too, just like the staff. Bullying, constant annoyance and harassments should always be taken very seriously in this U.S. state and everywhere. It should even be a crime. No student in this world should go to school scared, anxious and targeted by bullies. Today, I'm attending and studying at Moraine Valley Community College for a certificate, and for starting in late-August not because I'm stupid, because I want to listen to my emotions and inner voice. And sorry about my misunderstanding on Hinsdale's HS district where they too start in mid-August and their calendar was changed for a few years because they needed to accommodate construction. I'd still like my petition to be signed to change IL schools' calendars to starting in late-August, though (like when I attended Orland School District 135). Don't be a silent victim. Speak up no matter what (even if you're non-verbal, or even if you'll get a detention anyway).
