Today did not disappoint. We came here today not knowing what to expect. The different local artist studios was eye-opening! I have never seen such artistry or such creativity. I was blown away with the self-portraits and the film of the forests. I recommend anyone to visit their open studies events as they are amazing.

Ever wondered what that brightly painted building by Intuition and Bold City Brewery is? CoRK started off as an abandoned warehouse but has since been renovated into artists studios varying from classic painters, sculptures, graphic designers, mixed media etc. These studios feel like a second home to the artists so when you arrive for a show there's a very intimate feel to it. My first experience with CoRK was a Cajun Pot Luck themed around Artists hailing from Louisiana! Since then I have been HOOKED and have seen show after show! One of my favorites was the UNF exhibition April 2012 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=363198047059938&set=pb.182190641827347.-2207520000.1363276298&type=3&theater The photo doesn't do it justice! An entire room was filled with space-aged bubble igloos large enough you could interact with it! UNF described it as, "The project Synapse will examine the inner network of connectivity within the brain." I was giddy with delight when I saw it! I live down the street from CoRK and LOVE going to all their openings. There is always something NEW to see and it's free to the public. I can't recommend this jubilant venue enough!

Cork, like its name, is quirky. There's no Cork fee either if you attend one of the open houses. If I had talent in the visual arts, I think I would have a studio here. The building, inside and out, is bursting with creativity and art. I've never had a bad experience here and I doubt I ever will.

I got to go into the Cork Art District the other day. I will say that this place is really cool. This is such a great use of an old building. They kept a lot of the old framing from whatever factory it used to be. The big exposed wooden beams are really cool to the Bob the Builder in me. It also looks like they took old wooden pallets and lined the walls. This makes really good sense and it is a hang it and forget it material. I mean after you hang it you have no upkeep. As it gets older it gets better looking. Like Me. Ok, enough comedy. They have sectioned off little spaces for each artist. They even hang a lot of their works inside. There are some cool looking stuff on the walls too. They can also have a neat place for community dinners like the one that I'm here for. Such a neat use for an old building. I even hear of a couple more cropping up in the near future.

My wife and I had been there about ten years earlier and really enjoyed it. So on a beautiful early November day we made a visit. Still very impressive with the times opulence, it was a refreshing view of history in the areas. Rooms, offices, kitchen, library, etc. One remodeled large room had pictures from the early days of racing on the beach. Paintings, sculptures, desks, an elegant coffee server. It was all very fascinating to see. Also pictures of a disastrous fire that occurred there, and has been fully restored. The tour takes about 30-35 minutes, depending on how many questions you might have. The docent was very well versed on all the aspects of the home and the history. Hard to imagine being the richest man in America and being able to live in this fine house in the Winter. After the tour, I made a donation to the Historical Society thar do the excellent tours. And my wife made a separate donation by purchasing a necklace from the gift shop.

As a history enthusiast, I decided to spend my birthday enriching myself with local history that has not been talked about. The trolley tour does have this museum on their list of stops so it's easy for the average tourist or local. I did drive and they have a small parking lot in the front that's easily accessible. The museum was a former school for African Americans from the 1900's until the segregation which was only 60 plus years ago. The museum ranges from the Transatlantic slave trade to the Civil Rights era. The exhibits are very telling and informative with pictures and donated pieces from different time periods. The staff member I connected with, Jean, was amazing to speak with. I'm so proud this gem is getting recognition and acknowledgement from the city. It was also great to see locals from the Lincolnville area stop in to look for past classmates or relatives from the archived photos. Also, I was surprised to see my family history connected to this museum as my childhood pastor Rev. Thomas A Wright staged one of the first sit ins in St Augustine. He formed "the Gainesville 3" who integrated the Gainesville High, which one of the three students was my Auntie Angel. This is why I love history - to see that meant so much to me because these stories are untold and we NEED this center and platform to continue to spread awareness about our rich heritage.

Sometimes they offer cooking classes (i learned how to make köfte [kind of like meatloaf but with tastier spices] and a few other dishes), forums (coffee and discussion sessions), Turkish language classes, etc. I also took my son to a few of their festivals throughout the years (i even have a photo of him drinking Camlica lol). They sometimes held the festivals at other locations. One year they held it at fscj. That year, my son and i made pictures using the paint on water surface technique called ebru. It's now displayed in my house with one being of Jacksonville and the other being of Istanbul, (which are coincidentally where my hubby and i grew up). They have also changed locations into a much bigger stand alone building. (Address is correct on yelp.) I like what istanbul cultural center is doing for the Turkish community in Jacksonville (namely because they welcome outsiders to join and learn about their culture instead of making it exclusive). If it wasn't for this organization, i would not know anything at all about this beautiful culture. it must have left an impact on me, because my hubby is Türk! Bu yerde harika! (Now, it would be great if Jville got an equivalent Manila Cultural Center!!!)
