A Salt & Battery - Outside on a rainy evening.

The thought of fish and chips often conjure images of TGIF/Applebees/etc or frozen entrees for me…read more A Salt & Battery showed me what real fish and chips suppose to be like. Wishing for the whole deal, I opted for the fried food platter which consisted of fried fish, fried calamari rings, fried scallop, fried shrimp, and french fries. First of all, this isn't beer battered, it was breaded. Secondly, this is a lot of food for one person... The chips were pretty standard fare, crispy and lightly seasoned. Fish was fresh, doesn't have the frozen taste that I'm all too (unfortunately) accustomed to. The calamari rings came with 2 variety, one was the standard breading and the other had an unique seasoning to it that I couldn't place. Anyway all this fried food was completely offset the truly authentic greek salad of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, olives, feta cheese all topped with olive oil. Order and pay at the counter, take the number, sit down, wait 15 minutes for food. The staff were friendly and helpful, but were quite busy with busing the tables, taking orders, and bringing the food out. They only have outdoor seating. On nights with a slight breeze like the night I came, it was a great experience. However I can't imagine coming here during the summers when it regularly hits the low 30C. I just need that AC.

Affectionately known as Salt 'n' Bat, this Fish and Chip shop is frequented by ravenous uni students and St Lucia locals. It is a BYO venue which means you will often find a table of 20 or so college kids escaping bad dining hall food while charging up for a night out at the RE. While Salt 'n' Bat is clearly a uni kid hang out, its tasty menu (especially the awesome battered chips and Salt and Pepper Squid) attracts a more diverse crowd. Anyone aching for some good fish and chips will find this restaurant to their liking. They also have an impressive range of Boylan vintage sodas, my favourite of which is the traditional tasting root beer. Salt 'n' Bat is dine in or take away. If you are dining in, however, don't expect anything fancy as you will be seated in red or blue plastic chairs with a white plastic table. Nonetheless, the good food (and hopefully good company you keep) is enough to make Salt 'n' Bat a fine place to eat.

I'm definetely a regular here. The regulars know to stand aside once they place their orders too…read moreso they can take the next person's order on a busy day in the food court. (TIP) What I recommend, my personal favourites are: The Miso Chicken, Ramen and the Hanaichi Chicken dishes, all served with rice and the Hanaichi one has a really yummy mayonnaise like picked sauce served with a salad and chicken on the rice. Weird sounding I know, but trust me, it tastes pretty good once it hits you in the mouth. Tangy... yet flavoursome. One of the cheapest japanese hot dish places you will ever go to with high quality food and quick service. You won't pay more than $10 for a dish here and the turnaround time (unless you order the katsudom and ramen) is under a minute usually. You can order extra rice, but they charge for it, but they won't give you extra topping even if you pay as I found out. So you can ask for the chicken curry, without the curry, so it's just chicken and rice, but you'll pay the same. Worth a try, great tasting authentic food for those on a budget, or not on a budget.

As far as Hanaichi's go, this has got to be a favourite of mine. I've been coming to this one for…read moreyears and continue to love it because I've noticed they always give me slightly more servings than I've received at other Hanaichi's. It's the staff too. They're super nice despite the rush of people ordering from them, they always keep their cool and deliver their service fast and efficiently. My favourite dish? Well, that's easy... Chicken Katsu Curry of course! The only wish I had for Hanaichi, is that they have their own small dining space where you don't have to share with the rest of the food court. I could just imagine the ambience being great. There's an idea Hanaichi HQ if you're reading this, open a chain of small restaurants! I'm sure it'll be just as busy!

When my feet are aching from trekking up and down Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and my stomach is…read morecrying out for food, East West Food is the place I head to. A couple of their sushi rolls make for a healthy, filling snack and don't cost the Earth at only $2-2.50 each. I like the Teryaki Chicken and the California Roll. The Inari is pretty good too. And unlike a lot of the other food shops in Indooroopilly, it's not nestled in the food court, so it's easy to get to and you can avoid all the less healthy eating options like KFC and Donut King. The staff aren't particularly friendly, but the service is quick, the sushi fresh and the soy and wasabi free.

In this time I also ate my fair share of East West Sushi and for these reasons I feel I can say with confidence that I consider it to be the best Sushi place in Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. "What makes this sushi the best" I hear you mutter. Well, there are a number of contributing factors that I feel make all the difference. Firstly, I noticed in my time watching the East West Sushi trade that there is a steady flow of customers all day long, obviously reaching a crescendo around lunchtime, but still maintaining customer traffic until closing time. From this I noticed that the sushi itself is always fresh, sometimes even still warm from the freshly fried chicken or pork, as they need to replenish their supply throughout the day. Have you ever had really old, stagnant sushi that has obviously been sitting there all day, like a middle-aged double-divorcee perched up on a barstool slurping down on her lunchtime cocktail? If not, it is something that I'd never recommend. This is not the case at East West Sushi - the product is always fresh and delicious. In addition, you've got a range of flavors ranging from your traditional Japanese sushi rolls, to those bastardized Western sushi creations that I enjoy with great shame. The damage it will do to your waist and your wallet is obviously minimal, which is always a motivating factor for me when I'm getting my lunch. Ultimately, East West Sushi is a sure bet if you're looking for an easy lunch option around the centre. Be forewarned that there are sushi places in this area that I'll never return to, so it may be in your best interest to take my advice.

How Does Good Quality Get This Cheap? Great fresh quality,…read moreand the presentation is eye-catching (not just the cheese, as mentioned by another reviewer!). The generous portions for that low price totally threw me. I thought I was paying $10 for just the kebab, but it was a combo deal including a drink (the sign could have been a little clearer ... they're only losing potential customers). The perfectly crispy edge on the toasted bread with the suitably sized strips of filling; I gotta get back there right now. Pity that the food court trading hours are not 24-7. I would have given this 5 stars had it not been for the kebab place at the Harcourt Road Darra roundabout strip mall. But, even for an Indooroopilly Shopping Centre food court outlet, GRAB-a-KEBAB's top notch.

This got my attention for all the right reasons- I love cheese. Most times, I have to be in the mood for kebab, otherwise I'd think it's crap. So luckily for Grab A Kebab, their mountainous amount of cheese got my attention and got me craving a nicely toasted kebab. They have a good selection of fillings that you usually find at a kebab place and when they wrap the kebabs they're done neatly and not loosely. I hate it when a kebab falls apart before you even tuck into it. Customer service here is good and they attend to their patrons in a fast but timely manner. Overall, for a takeaway kebab place, it is really good.
