The bartender was awesome, but once we received our drinks and sat outside, we were ignored by the waitresses. They walked past several times to serve others, but never asked if we needed anything. We asked for a sever but were told by the manager, they were short staffed and we had to order drinks and food at the bar. However, a group a young White men sat next to us and a waitress took their food and drink order within a few minutes. We were the only Black group on the rooftop. The waitresses took everyone's order but ours. We had to ask for a menu, napkins, and water. After spending hundreds on drinks and food, we expected better. It's clear we weren't welcomed or valued. Remember the parking enforcement fiasco shortly after opening that generated enough backlash for Kern's to reverse course? Apparently, nothing was learned. Now, on UT football home-game days, vehicles are stopped and given parking passes with an arbitrary four-hour limit. Attendants repeatedly make comments like, "I'd hate for you to get towed." Multiple people in our group have experienced these verbal warnings on multiple occasions. Average college football game: ~ 3 hours, 22 minutes. Hope there is no overtime, because you may get towed before the game is done. Here's the absurdity: We patronize Kern's businesses to the tune of hundreds of dollars, typically multiple times a week. We gather with friends, enjoy food and beverage, and spend hours supporting the establishments inside. We're not abandoning our cars to attend football games. When a friend explained this to a parking attendant, she was told that spending money at Kern's "wasn't good enough." Seriously? Spending money at a FOOD HALL isn't good enough? Yet we were told that paying $35 for parking eliminates the four-hour restriction entirely. So someone paying $35 to park gets more flexibility than customers spending hundreds supporting the actual businesses? What an astonishingly backward approach to hospitality. I completely understand preventing people from using the lot as free stadium parking. But treating paying customers like parking violators, with repeated verbal towing warnings, is ridiculous. And it's not as though Kern's doesn't already have customer-experience problems. Online discussions repeatedly criticize the high prices, poor value compared with other Knoxville establishments, and frustrating parking arrangements. Others describe the patio as resembling an unsupervised daycare, with children running around and soccer balls disrupting people trying to enjoy their food and drinks. These complaints already give people reasons to choose other establishments. You'd think management would appreciate loyal customers willing to overlook these shortcomings and consistently spend money there, rather than introducing additional reasons to leave. Who wants to spend an afternoon enjoying drinks with friends while watching the clock and worrying about being towed? Kern's is replaceable. Knoxville has plenty of places offering better value, easier parking, and a more relaxing experience without the unnecessary aggravation. I genuinely enjoy some of the businesses inside and that's what makes this frustrating. The tenants give people reasons to visit, while the space is average, at best, and management decisions increasingly give people reasons to go elsewhere. Kern's needs to decide whether it wants to be a welcoming food hall or a parking operation that happens to have restaurants attached. Customers have choices. Being treated like an inconvenience while spending money is a compelling reason to exercise them.

It feels like it has some of…read morethe trappings of some of the metropolis tiki bars I've been to but in a smaller scale (that likely didn't require hundreds of thousands of dollars in building renovations). Drinks are heavily poured and true to their tiki origins, service is friendly, and the place feels really relaxing. PROS: -Good selection of drinks! Tiki drinks tend to be approachable to most people with their juice-forward design. They're also just pretty. Most of the drinks here run on the sweeter side, but there were a few drinks that looked like they'd run spirit-forward. I can't confirm as we didn't order them, but it gives people in your party some options. -Drinks are well-poured. If you're driving yourself, even one full cocktail is probably going to be pushing it. Definitely don't order some of their "Limit of...." cocktails in that case. But it's nice to get my money's worth. They taste very approachable, but they're heavily poured. -Every drink was nice to look at. They do a great job with garnishing; it was neat to watch as the server tends to garnish the drinks while the bartender makes the drink itself. We didn't receive any drinks in tiki mugs, but I also didn't see if they had tiki mugs either. -It's really nice to see that they attribute their recipes to where/when/who originally made the recipe. Most tiki drink recipes are "classic" recipes at this point, but it's really cool to see that they specifically listed out the 1930's bar that made the original drink recipe. -A good mocktail selection! While most of the mocktails kinda felt like "mixed juice concoctions", the fact that they had a whole page, had them reasonably priced, and still garnished them as if they were full cocktails was a nice surprise. As a DD, it felt like I was still having a great time and part of the social experience. -They have outdoor seating in front (I think?) and in back of the restaurant. It was too hot for that, but quite a few people were happily seated out there. That seems helpful as the restaurant itself doesn't have a ton of space. Expanding outdoors lets them seat a whole lot more people. -An extremely inebriated individual popped in, and while the bar turned them down for drinks, they handed them some water and let them use the restroom. They were extremely polite to someone who wasn't a "customer", and that was really nice to see. -Two individual unisex bathrooms. One of them has cute bird sounds that play while you're in there, and that was a really surprising touch. Both have free information and supplies for things adults may be doing after visiting here. CONS: -I wouldn't say this bar gives me "tiki bar" decor. They definitely serve tiki-style drinks, but the decor feels more "I love plants and leaves" than tiki. I still liked it...it's just not what I'm used to compared to most tiki bars. -Parking is a gigantic pain in the butt. We circled the area for a good 15 minutes to try to find a spot that wasn't in an extremely expensive parking lot. We ended up finding a street spot, but those max out at 2 hours. Plan at least a drink's price just to park to get into Tern Club. (Not the location's fault, but definitely be aware before you agree to meet up here.)

To lessen the vast cultural gap in our relationship, the man took me on a raucous weekend getaway to Knoxville where we bar-hopped, wore Pantone 151 C orange, and whooped & hollered in Neyland til I developed a very sexy vocal fry. Of the several bars we visited, Cool Beans was my favorite by far. The beer's cheap, the vibes are strong, and the atmosphere is one I wish I could claim as personally nostalgic. I tried the jalapeño infused tequila in a Bloody Mary, and I really shouldn't have done that because it's 3 hours away from me and now I want one everyday.

When we arrived, the bartender took us upstairs to our room. It would have made much more sense to have someone actually take our drink order at the bar so we could bring drinks upstairs, because once we got to the room, everything had to be ordered through a QR code. Even then, the bartenders weren't paying much attention to the incoming orders, so we eventually had to go back downstairs to let them know we had ordered drinks. The drinks themselves were fine, but definitely on the sweet side. We also ordered a flatbread, which unfortunately wasn't very good, and it came out only about five minutes before our hour in the room was up. And that brings me to my biggest issue: one hour is simply not enough time for karaoke. You have to search for every song yourself using a remote and YouTube, which takes quite a bit of time between songs. There's no song queue/deck where you can load up several songs ahead of time. By the time we figured everything out, we only got to sing about five songs before being told it was our last song and our hour was up. The staff was very strict about the one-hour cutoff. The entire place was also freezing. When we went downstairs to close out, one of the bartenders was sitting at the bar eating food she had brought from home in a Tupperware container, which just didn't give the best impression. I genuinely love the idea of Pink Cactus and would love to see it succeed, but right now it feels like a great concept that needs a lot of work in the execution. Add in how difficult parking is in that area right now, and I'd probably choose Knox Box for karaoke instead. I hope they work out the kinks because there's definitely something here. With this being a newer business, we will give them a pass on some of the growing pains, but there were a few parts of our experience that were not ideal. 1. We had no idea where to park, especially with construction out front. Signage would be helpful. 2. We had no idea where to go and check in for our designated 9 pm karaoke reservation. Again...signage, please. 3. After getting drinks at the bar, it was 9 pm and they said they were kicking out the last group and getting our room ready. 9:15 rolls around and we are still waiting. They give us free birthday shots (yay!) to ease the pain. by 9:30, we still aren't in our space and they haven't had the previous group leave. We had already paid for our room but had to be home by 10:15 for our babysitter to leave. By the time we got in our room, we could only sing 3 songs before we had to take off. Bummer. We would like to come back and support local, fun businesses, however, they need far stricter reservation times for starting/stopping. This may impact when we come back, since we are usually on a tight schedule. Fun concept and location (the old Landing House location-a legit house in South Knox). If they iron out the kinks, this will be amazing.
