Great facility and great people. The only negative reviews come from people who shouldn't be anyone's customer. Seriously, you drive an hour and a half to pick up a free move-in truck?!?! Storage facilities offer free move-in trucks for local rentals...thanks to jerks that take advantage it's no wonder I no longer have the option of using Cordata's truck since they no longer offer one because jerk's YELP away at their disappointment...just like whining about month-to-month rental terms that could be strictly ebforced but Cordata generously ignores. Not only have I received pro-rated rental refunds (which no one is entitled to under the lease) they have never insisted on collecting the next month after a move-out, even when I didn't give them the required 20 day advance notice. I've rented a storage unit here for several years. This is the complete package at a fantastic value! Most important to me was security. Owners live on-site, electronic surveillance 24/7, computerized security keypad and gate. All units ( many different sizes) are located on one level...no elevators to wrestle with. Owners are professional, friendly and extremely helpful. After selling my condo and needing storage fast, the move was stress-free. Also free was the moving truck they provided and a lock. I moved up to Bellingham about a month ago and Cordata was one of the few storage places in town with open units. I've stored my stuff there while staying with a friend and looking for my own place. I signed-up for auto-pay in good faith that it wouldn't be taken advantage of. I was especially motivated to sign-up given their insane late policy: Rent is due on the 1st, your gate code is deactivated on the 2nd, then $25 fees are applied on the 11th, 16th and 30th. Oh and also, there's the additional $40 certified fee on the 30th and another $50 fee after 45 days. I guess I should of known when I read this that they're in the business of nickel and diming, not the business renting storage units in a fair and ethical way. When I got my place last week, I called Cordata and gave 10-days notice, as specified in the contract. I expected to be refunded the rent for the remainder of the month, about $32. Why else would you give 10 days notice? Well, it has nothing to do with doing right by the customer. It's so that they can collect the full month's rent from you, while simultaneously collecting from the new customer who they move in 10-days after you move out. The really crappy thing, is that their policies trapped me with no way out. I considered unenrolling in auto-pay as the first of the month was approaching and it looked like I was going to get a place, but then they would have deactivated my gate code on the 2nd and I would have had to deal with that while trying to get my stuff out and move into a new place. At this point, I should just keep my lock on the unit through the end of the month, I'm paying for it right? Then what the heck with the 10 days notice!? I mean, is this not illegal? Requiring 10 days move out notice then charging you for the time after that 10 days??? They nickel and dimed a good tenant, showed a lack of ethics in favor of a few bucks and in turn, they've compromised good reviews and potentional referrals down the line. After e-mailing for a quote and not receiving a reply, I finally called and talked to Julie. Julie was pleasant over the phone, and arranged for us to reserve a 10x20' unit starting on September 5, with complimentary use of a moving truck. I called again a day later to change our reservation to September 4 and to pay the $50.00 reservation fee with a credit card, which Julie was kind enough to do and with which we received a written confirmation for our storage unit and use of the truck. What Julie failed to mention was that A-1 Cordata Self Storage would be closed on September 4 (Labor Day), and that when my husband drove an hour and a half to go pick up the truck there was NO ONE available to answer the locked door, answer the phone, answer my frantic e-mails or even get back to us until a day later. By that time, we had lost half the day and HUNDREDS of dollars scrambling to find an available storage unit and a moving truck, as seeing that we had sold our house and had to be out by a certain time. We ended up having to simply donate and throw out dozens of our priceless possessions because we were out of time and space in the alternate storage unit. When the onsite manager (I can't remember his name, unfortunately) and his wife, Amanda, finally called to get ahold of us, NEITHER OF THEM apologized to me personally, both of them blaming it on me ("It says here you have a reservation on September 9!"), my husband ("I wish your husband would have knocked a little louder, we were in the apartment at the storage unit sleeping until noon") and their employee ("Julie really messed up!") The onsite manager even had the nerve to say over the phone, "Well, this isn't on ME." This business has caused us more stress and heartbreak than I ever though possible. I work in customer service and apologize to customers all day long for issues that were not caused by me *personally*. It's called being professional, and something the onsite managers need to learn. They are a bit pricey with heated storage lockers, that barely stay above 55 in the winter, and of course for 6 months out of the year you don't need the heat. The aisles usually have dust and other little crap left around, which blows around when the heater fans come on. My roll-up door doesn't roll up properly and you have to push and giggle it to get it to stay, so sort of dangerous on top of it. I did report it and it was looked at but not fixed.
