I have been very involved in her move and have witnessed every aspect of this community and all caregivers and staff, and they are AMAZING! You can feel the love they have for their jobs and for the residents as soon as you enter. I feared a move from assisted living to memory care would certainly involve a decline for mom, but it's been the complete opposite. I have visited virtually every memory care in Whatcom and Skagit county because BOTH of my parents have suffered from Alzheimer's and needed memory care. I wish Silverado had existed when my dad needed it. With all my experience with so many facilities I can attest that Silverado is not only the BEST memory care I've ever found, but it's the best by a long shot. It is aesthetically gorgeous. The staff/resident ratio is unprecedented. The activities are thoughtful and engaging, and most importantly, every resident is valued and never "lost" and left alone. There are resident dogs, cats, birds, fish and even some young children that come to work with a parent. This helps keep the atmosphere of being there full of life. They have fun, interesting activities and interactions that make each day for our loved ones better. They have a little store with all kinds of items (scarfs, blankets, jewelry, fun decorating items, some toiletries, etc.) that are free for residents to take and keep. They have a Bistro area inside the main entry that has snacks, juice, water and coffee available all day. They also use this area for residents to gather for exercise, crafting, games, musical entertainment, theme party days, discussions and a care giver reads the local newspaper daily. The entire staff are top notch. Compassionate, attentive, and ready to problem solve at any given moment. The care givers constantly work on keeping up with the personal hygiene of residents. There are so many call buttons throughout the facilities for residents and family to push for assistance. One or more care givers usually respond within a few minutes of activation. The entire facility is a 100 times more clean than the other 3 assisted living places we tried before Silverado (not even close).There hasn't been one time that I have been to visit family (twice a week) when there wasn't a cleaning crew making the rounds. But in the next breath I would suggest that you not put your loved one at any retirement/assisted living facility. I worked at Spring Creek first in a lower position, and then in a higher position, and I loved the residents and the staff, but the company who owns and runs Spring Creek (Bonaventure) is purely, and I truly mean 100% about money, and nothing else. I can't speak personally for other comparable places, but my understanding from speaking to others in the industry is that they are all the same. So the things I'm about to tell you can probably be said for any other place such as this. I'm going to make this a lot briefer than I could, because I don't want to tip off to Bonaventure who I am, lest they come after me with their deep pockets and lawyers, but I'll say this: There is high turnover for a reason. They deliberately understaff and underpay so they can use the fact that the staff is in upheaval as an excuse to the residents about why they are not getting the service and treatment they expect and are paying for. And they are paying a LOT. $2500 per month is a good average, but I knew of residents paying over $4000 and even over $6000 for couples PER MONTH to live there. And for that they are getting a tiny room/apartment, an undertrained and underpaid staff who is verbally abused by the upper management, and who are working under impossibly unrealistic expectations. In my time at Spring Creek, the Dining Service Manager was constantly in tears over the residents yelling at them, but it wasn't their fault. They work with such a severely limited budget and guidelines on what they can serve, and staff to serve it in a timely manner, there is no way they can improve on the situation. Despite Bonaventure being out of state, they keep people hands-on in the building, and there is no decision so small that they don't oversee it. In response to any complaints by the residents, they speak flowery words, make excuses for why things aren't up to par, and rely on the seniors' faulty memories not to recall that it has always been like this. The two pluses I will give are these: it is a nice building, and has a feel to it like a cruise ship. But that is how they suck you in. Also, MOST (I can't speak for all) of the more "menial" employees really do care. BELIEVE ME - they would not suffer through the conditions they are under and treatment they must endure by this company were it not for their big hearts. But their big hearts are not enough to untie their hands and allow them to actually help people. Bonaventure doesn't want to help anybody, but only pad their own fat wallets. I gave Spring Creek 2 stars just for these 2 pluses I've described, but it was a very painful and difficult thing to do. I truly believe it is your responsibility to care for your loved ones. You can find a loving person or people to come to your home for what you're paying Bonaventure, if you can't do it yourself. And if you really can't deal with your parent or grandparent in your own home, you can find a small Adult Family Home to place them in that gives much more personal care than these retirement/assisted living homes can ever do. The only other thing I will say, and it's not a plus or minus, per se, but just to add to my experience... Bonaventure relies on the faulty memories of seniors for a reason... because most of them DO, in fact, have faulty memories. In my time there, a lot of residents really did seem happy, so you should be warned that even if your loved one is saying everything is fine there, that doesn't mean that it is. And you should not let them saying that it is ease your conscience about leaving them there. My own loved one hates to be a bother, so rarely says what's troubling them, if they happen to remember it at all. But I know because I am involved. Be involved. Be aware. Beware.

Later my mother moved into the assisted living side and they were able to see each other daily until his death. The staff are caring, helpful and professional. They know each person, their needs and quirks. The staff interact with the residents and make them feel at home. My father passed quickly and we were unable to be there but a aid stayed with him as he passed and prayed with him. I have really nothing negative to say about the staff there. The medical staff are easy to deal with, honest and straight forward with you. They coordinate with docs as needed. The food is good and they have a wide variety they rotate. Compared to other facilities we checked out, Highgate was one of the best. They also have the kitchen open for snacks between meals in case you miss one. Thanksgiving they are having a family meal that we can go to with our mother. The facility is well maintained and kept clean. They do a good job of ensuring it is functional with quality equipment. I recommend considering Highgate and my parents are happy there.

Eden's PTs made the transition to formal physical therapy easy and as it was at my home, so convenient, especially as being in a car is very difficult post surgery. Honestly, I was shocked at how bad this place was. This rehab facility (for mostly old people) was…read morerecommended by a care nurse at the local hospital. I thought the 1st place my dad was at last year (in Anacortes) wasn't that good, but at least they seemed to care for my dad....Shuksan couldn't have given a rats ass about him or anything else. For example: until my dad was given the all clear to walk, he wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom without assistance. The 2nd weekend I visited, he couldn't get anyone to help out. It took them 5 hours to come around to help him to the bathroom, and by then he had sh*t himself. Then it took another 3 hours to clean it up and while cleaning him up they ridiculed him. This man ran industries and was a world expert in fisheries. I found the CNA's in the common room watching tv and playing cards. I ripped them a new one....and it did no good. Another visit, I walked by a room with its blinds open. The patient was naked with no sheets covering her, falling off the bed (looked like she was hardly hanging on and screaming in pain. My friend who was with me tried to get the nurses to help, but they were more interested in playing with the cat. My friend eventually helped the patient back into the bed (and was then threatened with expulsion and arrest). Finally, at the end of dad's stay, we had a meeting with dad and I, the head staff of each department and a coordinator. I was told (I still had the medical POA) in the meeting that they were releasing him because his insurance had run out and that he could do everything well enough to live on his own. That was a load of bs, he still struggled to walk and do basic tasks....and the coordinator didn't pay any attention to the concerns I had. To top it all off, when I asked for a copy of her notes, she told me I wasn't allowed to see them. That turned into a big fight.... My dad didn't want me to write a review of Shuksan, but now that he passed away, I will do my duty to ensure that this place dies a miserable death and its staff gets their licenses revoked.
