The Dixie fire in 2021 tore through the town of Greenville decimating it. The camp is currently in a rebuilding phase and I don't know when it will reopen. I can tell you that my experience there as a camp aid back in 1986 was amazing and unforgettable. It is an international camp. So I got to meet and work with many campers from all over the world. I did things that I never thought I'd ever get to do, waterskiing for one. I learned to ride a horsey and camp out at some amazing locations with scenery that would reset your soul for enlightenment. read more

I sent my 15 year old daughter to Coppercreek a few summers ago. She had never been to camp. She's not an equestrian nor has any interest in horses. She just wanted to have a different summer experience. We were not disappointed. She still says it was the best two weeks of her entire life and wishes we had been sending her all along! I can't tell you if the food was good, if all the counselors were great, if all the activities were perfect. I only know that when I when to pick up my daughter after two weeks, she looked radiant. In love with camp! So, what are you looking for in a camp? To me, summer camp is where a kid can reinvent herself for a few weeks. Try new things. Make different friends. Come back home refreshed and recharged and full of confidence. I feel sorry for parents who have specific agendas with summer camp. "Improve my child's riding skills" "Make my kid a better people-person" "Cure my child of homesickness". Parents need to let go of their child and trust the camp experience. It works except in very rare circumstances. Kids needs a break from parents to break out of their shells. Coppercreek is a great place for them to do this. It would be unfair for me to compare my OWN experiences at Coppercreek in the 1970s as a camper and counselor. Times have changed. However, camp literally saved my life. Coppercreek was the best thing my parents did for me. Life was not easy during the school year for me. Coppercreek was a welcome respite. I think about camp just about everyday and continue to camp and hike in Plumas and Lassen county to this day. We chose not to send our children to camp because of financial reasons and because we wanted to travel with them ourselves. When I finally sent my daughter, I was so happy for her to experience what I experienced! Nothing has changed in my mind for what makes summer camp work for kids! read more

I went back three times to this summer camp when I was a youngn. My fondest memories were our backpacking trips away from the campgrounds and the campwide capture the flag matches in the forests.. trips to the county fair in the middle of the boonies.. innocent kisses and dances exchanged at the end of session dance.. mud soccer... talent shows... mountain biking.. Coppercreek Camp is Awesome! We sent our 9 year old son, who had never been away from home for more than one night, we of course, had no idea how he would handle it. Well, when we pulled up, he said, "This is just how I imagined it would be.". We were greeted by the friendly staff, who unloaded all his gear, and showed us to his cabin. He was so excited by the Battleship themed cabin, and immediately put away his belongings, gave us a big hug, and ran off with his counselor and cabin mates. He stayed for 2 weeks, and had the time of his life. He learned to skateboard on the ramp, kayaked at a nearby lake, lacrosse, climbing wall, and even went wakeboarding. He loved all of the traditional camp activities, the Dance Party, "Outpost" , and campfire. When I came to pick him up, I could see that he had made genuine friendships with his camp mates and counselors. By the time we arrived home, I could see that this experience had helped him to grow tremendously, he was much more independent. He hopes to return next summer. By far the BEST summer experience possible! Coppercreek is a great all-around camp for whatever interests your child has - horses, pool, camping, water sports - you name it. No electronics! A kid can just be a kid again. The counselors are experienced and keep the drama to a minimum. read more

I think camps turn out good people, and I am currently watching my children become these willing contributors to a better society. Not only do campers at Coppercreek get to try things their parents may be too busy or otherwise unable to assist with (horseback riding is expensive and backpacking is intense, for instance), but along the way, we learn to live with ourselves and others. I say "we", because I was a camper here for 10 years myself and I am proud to have three children looking forward to their fourth year of summer camp in 2013. My oldest is open in his life goals: be a counselor at Coppercreek and then do...something? I can't speak highly enough about the program, the people who make it possible, the legacy, the future, the directors, the passion that every counselor brings to camp: there are so many discreet and ineffable ingredients in a good summer at camp, and Coppercreek has been providing those since 1965. Our 9-year-old had never been to any kind of overnight camp, until her first experience at Coppercreek, this summer. She spent 2 weeks, and had the time of her life. She was able to make her own decisions about activities she wanted to do, and when she wanted to do the. She made friends, and and gained a sense of independence. She tried new things, including stand-up paddle boarding, horseback riding, and mountain biking. She genuinely loved camp, and can't wait to go back. The camp itself is beautiful, set in the Sierra Nevada mountains, with meadows and timber. There's no poison oak. It didn't seem to get too hot, or too cold. The staff was wonderful. The counselors are well-trained and nurturing. My daughter adored her counselor, and the programs are well thought out, with variety to appeal to almost any kid. She liked the fact that she could choose what to do, and spend extra time at those activities. She was a big fan of the food. She was happy a salad bar was always available at meals, and there was fresh fruit around for snacks. I learned that much of the produce is locally sourced whenever possible, and the kitchen staff staff focused on healthy meals. She said the food was great, and there was plenty of it. The entire camp dines together on a cool dining porch, so both counselors and supervisors make sure kids are getting the right balance of food. All in all, I can't speak highly enough of the camp. Coppercreek has changed my child's life for the better. Camp has given her experiences that she could not have had elsewhere. The first year she came home from camp, she was more self assured as she had done things that she did not think she could do. She went rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, tubing, crafts, horses, canoeing, and even slept under the stars! She first started at camp as an 8 yr old who was, and still is to a lesser extent, a very picky eater (she has diagnosed High Sensitivity and ADD). Her esteem had been damaged by bullying when she first went to camp. She originally was very nervous and felt she would be homesick. We had signed her up for one week, but she called after five days and asked if she could stay for two weeks! This will be her third year, and she calls it, "The Happiest Place on Earth!" When I registered her, she asked if she could stay for eight weeks. (We told her we would actually like to spend some time with her this summer as well. ;-) This year she is looking forward to being big enough to do the high ropes course. All of these experiences have developed into actual self esteem and a level of satisfaction with whom she is and wants to be, not a fake confidence that young girls today so often put forth. This has, obviously, impacted other areas of her life. She has found it easier to make new friends at school, and realizing what she is capable of has her putting more effort into school and achieving better grades. While she is still a picky eater, she manages to do quite well with the meals at camp. The owners and staff have been very accommodating of her special diet. Their approach has even allowed her to try a few new foods every year without the accompanying panic attacks that process usually includes. The cabin counselors are welcome to come home with us if they can duplicate that trick! Overall, Coppercreek is a magical place for children! read more

Speaking as someone with an undergrad degree in Education, and a graduate degree in child development: Coppercreek Camp is a pretty amazing place, truly committed to meeting the needs of the individual children who attend.The directors and staff go out of their way to accommodate everything from dietary restrictions to religious observances to medical needs to emotional disturbances. I know from talking with the directors that one of the reasons they choose to remain a small camp (around 100 campers or less in each session) is so that they know all the kids individually, by name. The campers' needs come first in all they do. This is a place where kids truly get to be "on vacation." Each camper has the freedom to build their own program for the day, so they can be as active or as mellow as they choose. The cell-phone and e-mail policies help kids focus on the present, building real relationships, face to face, moment by moment. While it can be hard for parents to go 2 weeks without hearing your child's voice, the directors are extremely accessible by phone and e-mail, and happily keep parents updated on campers' overall experience. At some camps, the director sits in an office, keeps track of paperwork and leaves the campers to the staff. At Coppercreek, all 3 directors are out and about, intereacting with the campers all day, every day. They are kind, loving, knowledgeable, fair, and fun. CopperCreek is a very special place. As first time camp parents sending our 8 year old off to camp, we were very focused on finding a place where she would be comfortable enough to try new things and flourish. CopperCreek is unique in its DNA and was perfectly suited for her needs. She was afraid to go the first year, but called on the 4th day to ask for an extra week. In our third year, she almost forgot to say goodbye when we dropped her off! My daughter has been several summers to Coppercreek and is now there as a CIT. I cannot explain the level of enthusiasm she has for this camp (and she went to another, "fancier" camp her very first summer and didn't enjoy it at all). She starts counting down for next year the day she gets home. This camp is rustic and traditional. No technology AT ALL when they are there (a big selling point from my POV). Horses, water sports at nearby Lake Almanor, a kind and caring staff that have been there since our first summer (and long before). This is the ultimate camp experience. The child-directed schedule makes for some very happy campers. The variety and quality of activities allows the kids to try lots of new things. The riding program is the best I've seen at a summer camp. How do I know? I was a camper there in the early 80s. Now I'm proud to say my own son attends. The technology-free zone is so refreshing. It's important to unplug and connect in real life. While it's challenging to not be in contact with one's child for 2 weeks, it really does help the campers to find themselves. The non-competitive nature of the program at camp creates an open and accepting environment in which campers thrive. My son loves the overnight camping trips and looks forward to new ones every summer. If I'm fortunate to live long enough, I'll be sending my grandchildren to Coppercreek too. I am so grateful to have made many lifelong friends there. And I have to say - the food has improved over the years - the cooks are really great and have handled my gluten-free diet without blinking when I've been up there. read more

Coppercreek provided a great first sleepaway summer camp experience for our 9-year old daughter. The riding program was superb, and the counselors and staff were very warm and encouraging. Our daughter loved it so much she wants to go back for a month next summer. We particularly like the smaller camp design (which allows for a closer community feeling and tighter supervision by the directors) and the fact that the camp promotes individual learning rather than aggressive competition. In addition, the camp seems to have more diversity than some of the other sleepaway camps we looked at in California. This place is a gem! read more

Disneyland isn't the happiest place on earth... Coppercreek is!! This is a wonderful summer camp up in the beautiful mountains of Plumas County. One of the best parts about this camp is that the family owns and runs it. The owners sing songs with the kids at campfire, teach riding lessons to the kids, drink hot chocolate with the kids at breakfast, and even dress up in crazy costumes on dance nights. The camp owners' children are all part of the summer camp as well and it is truly a family away from family. There are kids and staff that come from all over the world and it makes for a unique atmosphere. The friends I have made at camp have been my very best and closest friends. My time at camp got me through the tough times during the school year and I always had something to look forward to. Camp gave me time away from the bullies at school. I was able to be friends with people I wouldn't necessarily be friends with at school and I now have a support system via social media even when I am not at camp. The last Saturday nights of camp sessions were always filled with tears as I didn't want my friends to leave. This place is truly special and every child should have the opportunity to attend. It changed my life for the best and it will always be my happy place on this earth! read more
