Today they rolled into my office parking lot with an oxtail special, a plate loaded with fall-apart oxtails, jerk rice, green beans, and cornbread. I added mac and cheese because a good carb plan requires commitment. Plastic utensils seemed like a bad match for oxtails, but these bones surrendered at the slightest nudge. The meat was rich and silky, full of flavor, and entirely too good for a desk lunch. The sides were no afterthought. The mac and cheese was creamy and indulgent, the green beans properly seasoned, the jerk rice fragrant and bold though a few grains resisted the bite, and the cornbread leaned sweet, closer to cake than bread, in a way that felt like dessert was already built in. You could pass by this truck without a second glance, but you'd miss a meal that demands your attention. 4.5 out of 5 stars Soul food this good deserves a table, not a parking lot.

The party was such a success that it turned out to be 86 plates. Not only did they dish out enough for everyone, but they did it with haste and taste. Everyone was absolutely raving about the flavors of every dish on the menu. The birthday party wouldn't have been as great without them. Yes, I'm talking about eating at the food truck called On the Fly. Calling it a food truck is in this number, I'm not sure what you would call. It is fabulous. Now let's start off with the negatives, parking is not as easy as it is for most lunch places, but it's really not that bad if you know what you're doing. There are plenty of slots on the street before you get to the restaurant, and if you called ahead and are just picking up then you can park in the reserve lot, where On the Fly is located. Now these spaces are reserved for lawyers going to the courthouse, which is nearby. So you can't park there here all day, but if you're just stopping in for lunch or if you've called ahead or just picking up takeout, then you should be fine. If you're in someone's spot, the first place to look is the restaurant, so just know you may have to move fairly quickly. For me, I like to call in advance, place my order, and then Park in one of the spaces. Then I pick up my food and go and I'm only there for five minutes. Now that that's all out of the way, let's talk about some of the best food that you will have in Jaxonville. On the Fly sauce - I think this is made by a team of leprechauns they keep in the back of the food truck. Because it comes out so fresh, so delicious, and if they sold it by the gallon, I would be numero Uno in buying it. Blue chips - a great starter chips and blue cheese, perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and delicious. Firecracker Sesame seared Tuna - another solid performer, it has some kick to it, although the tuna is always perfectly cooked. Sweet and spicy quesadilla - oh my God, this dishes as close to heaven as I think I will ever get to. The chicken is so tender and put into a tortilla with caramelized onions, banana peppers, and covered in On the Fly sauce. I don't know how but this works so well you cannot imagine. Summer sunset- a blend of the Mexican Fiesta and the Passion Fruit Sangria. We went with one each of the original blends. It's either too busy, or the truck isn't at the location when I try to stop by. Just a warning: Parking can be a mess. Ordered the chicken special (quarter chicken w/ baked bean), rib special (2 pieces of ribs with Mac N' Cheese, and green beans), and a turkey leg. Asked for sauce on the side. That set me back about $32. Took about 5-10 minutes to get the order, and paid. The turkey leg was the only thing that I "enjoyed". My wife didn't care for anything. Ribs and Chicken didn't hit the spot. Baked beans had cinnamon in it - I actually like that. Mac N Cheese was a total miss. The green beans had to be canned and the seasoning used was too salty for my taste. In addition - The meat portion was quite limited. King of BBQ is still on Blanding and 103rd, for now (NOT the green pineapple shack). There's also BBQ joints opposite sides of this place on Lane, and unfortunately I would prefer to go to one of those places over this one.
