The place look deserted when I arrived but a quick call connected me with John who let me know his wife was in residence and would happily show me their wares. Violet gave me a tour of the roaster, explained the various coffee beans in house. She gave me a glimpse of future plans including bigger quantities of beans sold at a better price. Truth be told pricing was spot on given how fresh the product is. While you can buy Jovi on Amazon and even through their website, having them in town ensures the freshest roast and some great conversation with the owners. I ended up with a bag of Marcala and their holiday blend featuring beans from Honduras and Antigua. The owners have traveled to the region and learned the preparation process there. It's incredible when you think how these beans are roasted and then shipped halfway across the world in order to make it to your cup. We contacted Alex to set up a time to sample some pourovers. It was great to hear his heart and how he came to be at District. We were grateful for the stories of him partnering to empower roasters from Costa Rica, Salvador, and other places. Every type of roast has a story behind it. Not to mention that he is able to supply us ground beans at a good price. Also impressed with his service and care for us as customers. Given that weve had to give up so much in the coffee drinking experience we try and get what we do consume to taste as fresh as possible so weve turned to getting our decaf beans roasted locally. Weve tried a couple of places in Houston and just recently came across District Coffee. Once we checked their website and made sure it was swiss water processed and not bathed in paint stripper chemicals we decided to give them a try... the head roaster Alex is a humble guy who has a family operated business near the 249/Cypress area. I drove out to the District headquarters to pick up a pound of decaf and Alex gave me a tour around the facility which was modest, but professional. Before i left, Alex asked about the reason for decaf and i explained that we mix it with regular to create a half caff blend and with that he walked over to a bin in the shop and pulled out an additional bag of whole bean half caff blend of their signature roast and said it was "on the house" since i had come all the way out from the Sugar Land area. Wow. Now that was unexpected and also very nice considering gas costs near four bucks these days. We just had a pour over cup of that this morning and it was very, very smooth. If the regular whole bean decaf is anywhere close to the smoothness of this signature half caff roast we will most likely add District coffee to our regular rotation of coffees for our morning routine. That's exactly why this visit to the Spring location was so disappointing. When I first arrived, there was nobody at the register, which already set the tone for the visit. What should have been a quick stop then turned into over an hour. I ordered a smoothie and breakfast tacos, and even the smoothie took a while to come out. I finished the entire drink before my food even arrived. After about 30 minutes, I checked in with the staff and was told it was due to "miscommunication" and that someone was new, while the person who took my order was in the back on the phone. I had to repeat my order multiple times, specifically asking for no hot sauce and no salad. Despite that, after another 15 minutes, the tacos finally came out incorrect, with both hot sauce and a salad, and they were lukewarm, not hot. To make matters worse, the smoothie itself wasn't properly blended. What stood out most is that they weren't particularly busy, just a light morning crowd. I've been to the Tomball location when it was much busier, and the service there was still fast and attentive, which set a high expectation. Overall, the experience didn't match the premium pricing. I truly hope this location improves, but based on this visit, I wouldn't return to this one.
