There is something to be said for craft shops like this that produce great food at great prices, and an awesome staff to boot (One of the owners Kevin chatted with us backpackers, giving us tips on how to get the most out of our stay in Switzerland!) Try the Ingwerer ginger liquor too-- it is warm, perfect complement to currywurst, and it is all handmade by locals here in Bern. Awesome shop!!

Very accommodating restaurant in the old city of Bern…read more I arrived at Restaurant Schmiedstube at about 7:45 p.m. on a Thursday evening and was immediately seated. I was able to get a menu with a partial English translation (my German is too limited to order much beyond sausages and cutlets). The restaurant offered a modest but sufficient selection, including several standard Bern dishes. There was also a decent selection of wines. I ordered pan-fried trout topped with apples and served on rosti that was very good. The fish was excellently done, and the rosti was good, if a bit oily. The prices were reasonable--CHF 43.20 for dinner, two glasses of wine, and pear sorbet. There are enough good choices on the menu to make this a great place for a family or group.

Dinner is downstairs, and then there's a really cool bar upstairs with couches and little balcony-style seating where you can hang out before or after dinner. Our waitress was great from the start and took such good care of us. We ordered the beef carpaccio and the duck to start, and both were incredible. The carpaccio was hands down one of the best I've had in Switzerland. The duck came with a slaw and sliced apples, which was such a perfect pairing (srsly so good. For mains, my boyfriend ordered the lamb duo and said it was amazing, especially with the wine risotto. I ordered the cordon bleu and... wow. Just wow. It came with fries and ketchup, but the cordon bleu itself was unreal. As soon as you cut into it, the cheese inside is just chef's kiss!!!! We didn't even make it to dessert because we were completely full (which says a lot). Between the food, the service, and the setting, this place is absolutely worth it. Such a special experience. After we walked in and requested a table for five, the host looked us up and down, then with a smack of his lips told us "about a fifty minute wait". Of course, I did not actually dine there after receiving that sort of welcome. Try not to judge your customers by looks or clothing. You just missed out on a large cheque. To those who like matches or need a light: I will give one star for having a big jar of matchbooks. Just go down and grab some! Pretty nice and compact.
