Very accommodating restaurant in the old city of Bern.
I arrived at Restaurant Schmiedstube at about 7:45 p.m. on a Thursday evening and was immediately seated. I was able to get a menu with a partial English translation (my German is too limited to order much beyond sausages and cutlets). The restaurant offered a modest but sufficient selection, including several standard Bern dishes. There was also a decent selection of wines.
I ordered pan-fried trout topped with apples and served on rosti that was very good. The fish was excellently done, and the rosti was good, if a bit oily.
The prices were reasonable--CHF 43.20 for dinner, two glasses of wine, and pear sorbet.
There are enough good choices on the menu to make this a great place for a family or group. read more
