Came to Switzerland in July of 2011 on an abroad/internship/volunteer trip but decided to stay at the Hotel National Bern prior to the start of the internship so I could tourist around a bit.
It is a nice little quaint hotel situated within walking distance from the Bern train station, the parliament building, bear pits, Albert Einstein's house, Aare River, etc...... well, within walking distance from everything really.
The rooms are quite comfortable and extremely clean (as is everything in Switzerland) and continental breakfast ( mmm Aufschnitt ^_^ ) is served (for free) in the restaurant on the first floor ( which doubles as a salsa club on Friday nights).
The customer service from what seemed to be the manager was average (wanted to charge me for another reservation I had cancelled until I insisted she keep checking), but other than that the service from one night clerk specifically stood out.
On the second night of my stay, I was still very jet lagged and extremely hungry in the middle of the night. I decided to run downstairs to ask the night clerk if he could recommend any good restaurants in the area that were still open. I wish I could remember his name or even tipped him, but I am sure he will be a very blessed man for his kindness.
Without thinking twice, he led me to a food pantry situated in a basement area and proceeded to give me a plate full of cheeses, fruit, and crackers under the condition I not tell anyone!!! :D ( I hope the owners don't read this yelp review)
Another clerk/waiter (because he was always there serving breakfast every morning) whom I spoke Spanish to the whole time was also exceptional!
To cut this story short, I would have given this hotel four stars if it weren't for this night clerk and his amazing customer service. But I can assure that this hotel is above average and really convenient location wise. read more
