I just wanted to share a recent horrendous experience that I had with Cooney Air Conditioning & Heating of Syracuse. Cooney installed a $11K combi bolier/h2o heater for me 5+/- years ago. First Cooney is no longer Cooney. They were bought out by John Betlem Heating & Cooling based out of Rochester. They are still going by Cooney locally when you call the local number, which in my opinion is false advertising. You only find out that you're dealing with Betlem when they try to sell you a yearly maintenance service plan. With that said, here's what happened. Last Tuesday I woke up to no heat on my 2nd floor. I called Cooney for a service call. After leaving a message, I get a return call about 2 hrs later. The Betlem rep tells me that they can't service me until Monday, a week later. I said again, "I have no heat". They replied sorry, that's the best that we can do unless you buy the "yearly maintenance plan" and then we can schedule you sooner. I asked them to send me the information so I can review it. After reviewing I called back, spoke with a different rep ready to purchase the " $184 plan" and asked, now that I'm buying the plan when will you be out. There reply was, next Monday. What a scam. The old Cooney was first rate. When I had emergency issues in the past they were at my house within several hours or by days end. The way that it should be in an emergency situation. Luckily, I'm knowledgeable about a lot of things and after 2 days of "troubleshooting" I figured out the issue by myself. I will be looking for a new company who can meet my needs. I warn everyone out there. Do not do business with Cooney/Betlem. The old Cooney was a small local business who built a great business on customer satisfaction and great work performed with pride. Betlem is a large business not geared to personal service and they just don't give it $hit. All they care about is making money. read more

We have used Cooney Air Conditioning & Heating for the past 28 years. On December 10, 2025, I contacted them because the heat was not working in our office. I was told I would receive a return call to schedule the repair. I never received a return call and scheduled another company for the repair. On December 11, 2025, I arrived at my office about 6:50 AM to find a Cooney Technician putting a ladder on the side of the building. I stopped the technician and explained the details and explained Conney's services were no longer required. read more

What a waste of time and effort. The tech that came did everything he could to boost the bill and not fix the problem. I'm not sure he knew enough to fix anything. read more

Cooney installed both a new furnace and A/C unit years back but the customer service and technical expertise has certainly gone downhill since the initial install - which was great by the way and done by Brian P.. He did an excellent job. Since then I've had two service calls due to a lightning strike in our neighborhood and one later for a hardware failure of the high-voltage unit in the air cleaner. The lightning strike event took out the circuit boards in both units but the problem was the new technician. Everyone has to learn but I was paying over $100 per hour for this new tech's training. They were supposed to be certified - meaning they had been trained. Apparently not. The tech spent about 4 hours and was on the phone asking someone back at the office how to troubleshoot. That cost me about $2,500 but I didn't complain. The next service call was for simple high voltage unit failure on the electronic air cleaner. To clarify, prior to my retirement I was a certified electronic technician and a senior systems engineer before I retired. So I know my way around electronics. I had diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes - I read the manual that came with the equipment. Three pages with two pages showing photo's of how to perform the check for 24 volts and how to test for the presence of high voltage followed by a paragraph explaining how to do it. Called Cooney for service because they held the 10 year warranty on the unit and Carrier said I had to go thru the dealer. Fair enough. The (senior) tech arrived. We discussed the problem, I showed him the manual and then I showed him how to do the test because it was evident that he had very little knowledge of electronics. Three hours later he was still reading those 3 pages and saying he couldn't see any high-voltage arc as you would if the unit was functioning. Yeah... so I explained to him that he wouldn't see an electrical arc since the high-voltage section failed. Then I got the bill for 3 hours of labor plus travel time. What...? Called the office, and talked to someone about why am I being billed for 3 hrs for a 15 minute diagnostic procedure. They reduced the bill to 1 hr of time. Which brings me to the present. Carrier is having to replace secondary heat exchangers due to a class action lawsuit. I called Cooney to setup an appointment which was scheduled for this week. When I spoke with their service manager, I asked what the hourly cost of the inspection would be and I told him of the experience I had over the air cleaner that I didn't want repeated. According to the manager, they were not aware of any Carrier heat exchanger replacment program and he was reluctant to make any commitment on pricing for the inspection other than to say it will be charged at the hourly rate but never said what that rate would be. He said he would get back to me. I emailed them a copy of the letter and asked for their hourly rate. No response. I sent another email asking - plus I mentioned that another company was offering free inspections and was Cooney making any similar offers. The response was that they were cancelling the appointment and he said he mentioned the $125 hourly rate. He did not and that was why I sent the email. When I called and spoke to the manager he said the owner decided that due to the past dispute (air cleaner debacle) they did not want to perform this service. Fair enough - it's your business and I went with a different company. What my point here is Mr. Cooney is that you sent untrained personnel to fix problems on equipment that was purchased and installed by your company. In your eye's the customer is never right I guess and this needs to be brought to the attention of people that are considering using your services. No doubt you have many happy customers from years past, you have been in business many years but things have certainly changed at your company and I'm no longer a valued customer as you once told me I was. The attitude of the company over the past several years is one of arrogance and disregard for the customer - and it certainly shows. I don't need you but you do need customers..... read more

Been doing business with them for a long time. Reliable and fair prices. Not cheap but hvac I want responsive and skilled.

We had five items installed: furnace, air conditioner, water heater, humidifier, and new duct work. The workers were courteous and knowledgeable and got the work done efficiently and on time. The concrete pad outside for the air conditioner is perfectly flat and very sturdy. The also put the furnace and water heater on slabs on our basement floor, giving the items a stable level base. The duct work was done equally well and the humidifier was also installed very well as was the condensate pump. The air conditioner condenser is very quiet. just what we were looking for. All in all the installation was perfect on all levels and I don't usually say that. We couldn't be more pleased with both the products and the installation. read more

I had a significant boiler failure in my historic home. I called Cooney on a Saturday to come troubleshoot the problem. Tim was at my home within the hour. He was extremely patient, knowledgeable & answered all of my many questions. The boiler ended up needing to be replaced & my point of contact was Scott. He was wonderful & very responsive. He even came over to reset my hot water heater after the welding process was completed because the tech was tied up at another job. Roger however was my knight in shining armor. He essentially built my new boiler from the ground up. Not only is he an expert, but he is super patient & takes the time to explain everything & answer all of my questions. He showed me exactly how to bleed the system every week & what I need to look for in case a service call is needed. In addition to walking me through step by step he labeled all the shutoffs for the power, gas, and water to the boiler with easy to read tags. I will be using Cooney for every single service going forward & recommending them to anyone who needs HVAC, furnace, or boiler service. read more

Our air conditioning stopped working. We have been working with Cooney for the last couple of years and they told us they could make it between 6 and 8 and it was important because we have animals that require cooler areas. Well guess who never came and we called again to say we need them and it felt as though they made every excuse not to come out and help tonight. But we will call again in the morning to try and get them to come out.... Despite being there for our yearly check up 2 weeks earlier and letting us know everything was great! Umm... Even if it was great at the time, The Grand attempt to avoid coming out is having us really question our loyalty to Cooney... read more

I have had my boiler serviced by this company for approximately 2 years, the boiler was not working this fall properly and I have been spending money consistently over this winter season. I have spent well over 2000.00 dollars and still have no consistent heat . I would not recommend this company as they obviously do not have skilled techs to diagnosis or fix the problem. Save yourself the headache and find a more qualified company that's what I plan on doing. read more

Cooney refused to give the information need to complete the $500 rebate from National Grid. They stated they are not engineers. These figures are the computations used to compute the size of the unit needed for your floor space. Cooney is listed as a signed participant of the program and the unit installed is part of the program. Five hundred dollars may not be a lot of money to some people but to a retired couple on a fixed income it is considerable. read more

I was in need of a new furnace and I'll be honest I've always used another company but this guys had helped out once in a time of need very late at night so I decided to get an estimate from them in addition to my usual company. Ron did the estimate and discussed everything and some potential problems and solutions the estimate was delivered in time as promised. The price was very competitive and included work that the other company did not include so I went with cooney The install process was great met the installers the first day and let them go about thief work. No issues at all I wasn't even there when they did the work. I had no concerns about not being at the house while they worked. Everything was installed good and the place was cleaner when they left than when they started So looks like I've got a new hvac company!!!! read more

Cooney installed a new furnace for me 5 years ago. Recently We had issues with the heat not turning on and so I called for service. The technician explained that it was probably a pressure switch Because the heat somehow came back on before he arrived. A week later the heat went off again and so I called for service and to install a new pressure switch. Joe explained that they did not have one in stock and that if I could wait 24 hours he would see if he could get 1 from his local distributor ship that he works with. They could install it under warranty If I could just wait 24 hours. Without any call back after 24 hours I decided to call them. I still did not have heat in mid December and this was no concern of theirs. They don't have good relationships with distributors in the area and wont-work with some of them. I am without heat and without warranty service and without care from cooney. I am calling around for my own part to see if others can repair this for me. Do not work with these people. It is very difficult for me to believe that they can treat their customers this way. BTW they charged me for the 1st service call for a Nickles worth of free advice. If they were to come back they would charge me another $250 for the service call labor plus the $125 for the part. Cooney used to be a good company to work with but they have fallen on hard times as many others have as well.​ read more

Top notch service from very professional people. My furnace finally died and Cooney came at 9pm to set up installation of a new one. They were able to do it the next day and the whole process was over in under 24 hours. Everyone involved was extremely professional. They were so clean that other than the new furnace, you couldn't even tell they were ever there. read more

Was tailgated and then double passed today on a double solid yellow by a Cooney driver. I have no idea what the quality of work they do is (could be stellar) but this is enough for me to never call them if I have trouble with my HVAC. (Even though perhaps they'd be the first ones there?) very unprofessional. read more

They responded on a Sunday morning even though we were not an existing customer. We had a new furnace within 24 hours. We had to pay for the initial service call on Sunday but do not pay for the new furnace until all the work is complete so they have to come back to finish up the details. Ron the service guy and Ron the sale guy are both easy to work with and seem to really care. It was nice when you have no heat and it is cold out. read more

Do not use these people. No customer service. They had to order a part showed up to my house with the wrong part. Unable to fix unit and still charged me $200. I now have to wait at least another week for the right part to come in and I was told it's my fault that the vendor mailed them the wrong part. Disgusted with their lack of integrity. It was made clear that my annoyance with their lack of service was not their problem because they had other customers to tend to. read more

Had Charles our today to do some work. John came out along with rain Patton. I had 3 different things that needed to be done. John went around and 2 of the items I thought needed replacing just were tightened up and no need to replace. He did not want to just replace something for no reason. He left as Brian was replacing a faucet. He did an excellent job and he even replaced everything in the vanity to where it was before. I couldn't believe he would do that to begin with but he put everything back where it belonged after the faucet was replaced. read more

Good job repairing the furnace, but should tell customers on phone they have to pay for travel time...was told overtime is $129 an hour plus $99 additional hour...the mechanic worked an hour and charged $268...said also had to pay his travel time. Be nice to know that in advance. read more

Have to give these guys a crap review. I have an electric furnace blowing cold air. I called Cooney as they are the original installer of my furnace. The technician that showed up claimed there was nothing wrong with my furnace. Technician also claimed that my furnace was a bit small for my three bedroom ranch, although it has been working fine for years. Miraculously when he put the unit back together it was blowing warm air again, so I paid the service fee just happy to have it blowing warm air when its winter. It blew nice warm air for roughly two weeks and is now back to blowing cold again. I called Cooney again, and they just don't want to stand by their work and want to charge me full price including overtime due to it being weekend. I mean all they had to do was throw me a bone and offer some sort of discount figuring I already paid them $200+ for two hours of work the last time they were here. read more

My furnace died 2/13/18. I know this because on Valentine's Day morning, it was 59 degrees in my house! I called Mark at Cooney on my way to work. He had a repairman at my house that afternoon who assessed the situation and decided I needed a new furnace ( not a surprise at all!). He left me space heaters to get through the night and this morning, promptly at 8 am the installers arrived with my new furnace! They were neat, professional and very efficient. I called in an emergency air conditioning service to be repaired last night. The tech came out installed the wrong size capacitor and said it was a temporary fix and told me he would be back the next day with the correct size and charged me for the material, labor and service of $314. The next day I received a call from Mark at Cooney telling me I would have to pay a labor fee for them to come back and insert the correct size. I told Mark this was never mentioned to me or my husband or written down on the quote he then proceeded to tell me that he doesn't want my business because I told him that he should have mentioned there would be an additional cost. I do not recommend this company to anyone!!! read more

They replaced a drain piece inside my furnace this morning. I have no reason to question the quality of the work they did, but they gouged me for labor. The appointment was for 7:30. They called shortly before 7:30 and arrived about 7:37. They left at 8:40, and the elapsed time included time for them to leave to purchase additional parts at a hardware store - common fittings I would have expected to be on the truck. But I was charged 1.5 hours labor. After I protested to the tech, he slammed my door when leaving the house. When I called the office to complain about the charges, I was told I am paying for their travel time (they hadn't told me this when giving the estimate), and that the quote was for 1.5 - 2 hrs, which evidently gives them the right to charge as much as 2 hrs. Both the tech and the guy in the office indicated they were doing me a favor by charging only 1.5. How long it actually took was irrelevant to them. But the clincher was the office claimed their GPS proves the techs left their offices at 7:13 and arrived at my house at 7:15. Apart from the fact they actually arrived shortly after 7:30, their truck must have wings because Google maps indicates it is 5 miles and 12 minutes between their shop and my house - and that's when there is no traffic. Maybe the actual work is fine - time will tell - but the lack of integrity will drive me elsewhere next time. read more
