Cool Springs Park is off of U.S. 50 deep in the mountains of West Virginia. It's a welcome oasis for the traveler - all the essentials are here: restrooms, a lunch counter, convenience store offerings, gas - as well as a bunch of stuff you don't find at most convenience stores: Buckwheat flour, Indian Moccasins, Tom-toms, etc. Roadside America has a snippet about the place: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/7640 Stopped in to use the restrooms, gas up the car, and get some cold beverages. Cool place! Oh - and the gas pumps are full-service - I could not figure out why there was this older woman hanging out by the gas pumps overseeing my pumping the gas - apparently I was doing her job - but I did not stop to wait for someone as I was unaware of the full service...

Awesome odd bit of history preservation! The cool old general store and eatery was neat. Takes you back to the days of a small-town West Virginian diner: table seating I the center, counter seating around the outside with a walkway between the two - server gals would be able to attend to the max number of customers' needs if they were ever to get (or had gotten, back in the days) slammed with hungry patrons. American diner-style offerings. We all got the daily special: Pepperoni Roll, waffle fries and slaw. The pep and cheese were inside a big, sweet roll. Soft and chewy, but plenty a "air space" when I bit in. Too much bread, not enough pep and cheese. The slaw, even with quite a bit of pepper sprinkled atop, was too sweet for me to finish. The fries were fresh outta the dryer, crispy on the edges, good seasoning. The rest of the inside space image real store style - a little bit of a whole lotta stuff. They sell fresh and canned product - whatever in season. Six or seven different home grown apple varieties out front, so Ranajoy and Stephen got a mix to take home. They sell their own cured bacon... In due time ;) Outside, well there's where it gets pretty freaking amaze-balls!! It's a petting zoo/tractor museum. Ok, so not a tractor MUSEUM more like paraphernalia. All kinds of old rusted tractors spaced out for looking. I loved the old red caboos and the gated fish pond! Both donkeys and the llama came to us, so we were able to pet!

OK for basic food when you're getting gas or supplies. People are nice, place is clean but food is just OK.

Mt Top Convenience…read more Shades of Colassessano's Matriculating into Fairmont State in the 1960's entailed an array of eventful activities which enhance and develop life. As a subscriber of direct on campus education, I eagerly embraced campus life. One element was selecting membership in Theta Xi. Weekly meetings were accompanied by a Theta Xi gathering at Colassessano's which was a colorful Fairmont Pub. Sadly this institution has been replaced by a sanitized version. During that era, Pittsburgh beers appealed to the working class, and popular labels included Iron City Lager, Fort Pitt Beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz, Miller High Life.... As a three year high school letterman, and scholar athlete, I had zero experience with beer, wine, spirits, and shine - all were available to Fairmont State students. I was not yet eligible to hold a draft card. While Theta Xi brothers debate the advantage of various Pittsburgh beers, I was happy to purchase a pitcher of nearly any cold draft. Given decades of European travel, I developed a palette for several German and European brews; none of which were offered at Colassessano's. In retrospect it is this appreciation of European brews that spared me from the emerging micro brewing craze. Ok, some of these brews are very good, and several are horrendous. It was at Colassessano's and the publican that I encountered my first Pepperoni Roll. Home baked rolls included mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmigiano. And Oliverio's Hot Peppers were added to this bundle from heaven. Later we learned to cherish the Colassessano's pizza. This pie seemed to approximate a Chicago deep dish pie with mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmigiano, Oliverio's Hot Peppers, pepperoni, hot sausage, .... Mt Top Convenience is listed on the West Virginia Pepperoni Trail, and for good reason. I take care to phone in an order form Ohio one day in advance of pickup. Of course, I visit the local Davis grocery store for a dozen bottles of Oliverio's Hot Peppers. I take care to import Pilsner Urquell and Guinness Stout for this ski holiday. Yes, Guinness Stout is better in Ireland. Mt Top Convenience offers a variety of interesting brews, and there are several microbreweries in this area. Mt Top Convenience offers a great take on pepperoni rolls. Caveat: do Not take chances with filling station pepperoni rolls which are pre-packaged. Our goal is to support local business, and our menu and dining options for this holiday will center on local West Virginia businesses.

Love to support small business…read more That's why I stop in to Mt. Top Convenience. A stop for all things. The hamlet of Thomas, WV was a notorious gambling and mining den. I bought some snacks, coffee and news here. The girl at the counter did not even say a word. NOT. A. WORD! Guess I erroneously thought a small town A+P 'Convenience''d be friendly.. nah. I decided to get out of the house and take a drive. No real destination in my head, just get on…read morethe road and see where I go. I ended up in the Deep Creek area and was enjoying the scenery. Of course I needed to refuel on many levels, I started out for a gas station/convenience store. And with me, you know I needed to see if my favorite one was in the area. Of course there was, and of course I beat feet until I arrived here. It's a newer looking Sheetz, but on a small footprint. It feels pared down, but it also feels as if it fits in perfectly for the area. It is constantly busy, there was a steady flow of people here, it was hard to find a place to park let alone a pump to get gas. What complicates this area a little more is that there is a car wash right behind the Sheetz. As far as I can tell, it is not owned by Sheetz. In order to access the car wash you need to drive through the Sheetz parking lot. On top of that, when everyone wants a car wash I am sure this is probably a horrible place to be. Inside I made my rounds. Used the facilities, super clean. Browsed the shelves for a snack, they were aplenty. Grabbed a drink from the cooler, make sure to pay attention to pricing, sometimes there are deals. Made my way to pay and this was one of the most pleasant interactions I had all day. The lady behind the counter was so chipper and greeted everyone as if she knew every single person that walked in here.

For a gas station you can't really beat it. Ton of pumps, a couple choices for food inside, plenty…read moreof parking. Food choices were McDonald's (w/ drive thru), Subway and pizza.

Basic snack stop with gasoline…read more Employees come and go as is usual with this area. Steady business is related to location near to a major WV scenic area. Probably better service areas nearby.

I am giving this store two stars because our experience here was first positive and then negative…read more We arrived late at night on the eve of Veteran's Day for a weekend spent hiking in Blackwater Falls State Park up the street. The young lady who was working Thursday night (11/10/16), "Angel", was as sweet as can be. She welcomed us with a smile and gave us some tips on where to find some place to eat the next day. The next morning, my husband and I returned to the station to pick up some coffee and a quick breakfast. There was a young man behind the register and an older lady in the back by the coffee. Neither one of these employees made eye contact or smiled when we greeted them, but we felt their stares as we got coffee and sat down in a booth to eat a sandwich even though we asked if it was okay to sit down in the booth to eat. We left thinking, maybe they were upset they had to work on a holiday? We returned later that evening to buy some bottled water and another older gentleman was behind the register carrying on a conversation with a young lady about correctional officers in a women's prison who if I am not mistaken had exposed themselves to the female inmates. Whatever, none of my business... I got the merchandise I wanted to buy ready and placed it on the counter once the young lady had left and the counter was clear. I tried to make eye contact with the man at the register and said, "hello, how are you?" but he ignored me and instead rang me up complaining that his scanner would not work properly. As I paid him, again I smiled and tried to engage him but he avoided my efforts. Okay, so why should I care right? I guess where I come from people actually try to be nice if they work in customer service, so it was weird to be totally ignored. Hopefully, "Angel" can find a way to rub some of her pleasant personality off on her coworkers.... Sincerely, Happy to be back home in Virginia

After another stretch on the highway I needed to get fuel and a little something for myself. Being…read morein Sheetz country I was happy to see there was one on the next exit on the highway I was on. This location wasn't far from the highway and right next to some retail, noticeably next to a Walmart. This is your typical Sheetz setup that we have all been accustom to recently. Decent amount of pumps to do a quick fuel run and more than enough parking if you need to just do a Sheetz run. There are Tesla chargers here if that's your thing. Inside I was pleasantly surprised that they still had the fresh brewed iced tea and not one of those dispensers. I tapped the screen a few times and ordered myself some breakfast sandwiches to take on with me for the rest of my road trip. Prior to leaving I made sure to stretch my legs outside before getting back on the road. It was a warm day, and being morning it was a nice break before getting back into my vehicle.

As such, my photos will likely be outdated in March. I visited this Sheetz on the day that it was temporarily closing. I wanted to buy gas for my vehicle as well as snacks and beverages. The store had a sufficient number of gas pumps, and the price for the gas was average. The store had partially empty refrigerators and shelves of foods and beverages, but I found some snacks and beverages that I liked. I waited in the checkout line for a couple of minutes. The cashier had a pleasant personality, and she thanked me and told me to have a nice day.
