Our staff decided to visit Cool Runnings after having a rough week. The food, staff, and atmosphere did not disappoint! We had a great time and everyone enjoyed sitting out back and enjoying a beautiful day with a nice drink. Some staff ordered the Jerk Chicken Dinner while others had the Jerk Chicken Tacos. I and a few others enjoyed the Coconut Shrimp, Reggae Wings, and the Crab Rolls. Everything was delicious. A lot of us also ordered Red Stripes to wash everything down. This place has been on my bucket list for quite a while. I'm mad at myself for waiting so long. I have been missing. We went on a Saturday around 2:00 between lunch and dinner so we were able to sit at the bar. The staff is so engaging! The food and drinks were amazing! I knew I had to check this restaurant out when I was in the area with friends during Memorial Day weekend. We arrived right after they opened at noon on Sunday and seated ourselves right at the bar. They also have traditional inside seating and a heated patio available. The Jamaican Painkiller was a little sweeter than other variations of painkiller cocktails I've had at other bars, but I thought it was tasty and priced appropriately for the strength. The sauce that came with the meat patty I ordered was addictive. For my main entree, I ordered the jerk chicken plate and my dining partner ordered the jerk catfish. The portions for both were huge! We had plenty of leftovers. I loved the jerk chicken, but I tried some of the jerk catfish and was even more impressed by the flavor from this dish. The service and atmosphere was welcoming. Honestly I'm done traveling to states and trying to find a restaurant that makes something they're "known for". In Indiana's case that might be pork tenderloin or sugar pie. I wanted GOOD food from someone who cares, and this was GREAT food! If I were ever passing through again, I would come back here for the chicken wings alone. Found this gem and decided to try it out! Per the bartender, it's been around for 8 years and even features a food truck! The restaurant is cute, and the covered deck probably triples the dining space. There is a full bar as well as table service. There is a lot to choose from on the menu. We decided on the Curried Lamb and the Jerk Chicken, with sides of Red Beans and Rice, Cabbage and Mac n Cheese. Both dishes were served with two slices of fried Plantains on the side. As you can see from the pictures, the portions were ample! Having been to Jamaica, I can attest the flavors to be authentic and what I expected. Unfortunately, the goat and cabbage were a little over salted, which took away from the experience. The chicken was grilled well and had a good flavor profile. We had a friend visiting from out of town and came here for dinner. The downside was we had to wait a while for a table, and the food was slow to come out. It was also a little expensive. However, there was a large meal presented and everything was very delicious! I am usually not a big meat eater but couldn't resist trying oxtail. It was very soft and tender, with a lot of flavor, and very filling. My husband was very excited about his Mac and cheese but didn't think the pineapple bowl added much. This is definitely a in a city full of fast food and franchise restaurants. I'll be honest I was so happy to have found this place. It has that hole in the wall feel to it with some pretty decent reggae music playing while you wait for your food. I ended up ordering the jerk chicken plate which came with rice and peas and plantains. The jerk wings were smokey and spicy absolutely delicious. The rice and peas were okay and the plantains were really good. Nothing but high praise for the food. As far as the service it was okay but definitely could have been better. I can't imagine eating a meal here and not being full! We got the beef patty, curry chicken, and stew chicken. Kids devoured the rice and beans like there was no tomorrow. This place is so wonderful. It's worth going off the beaten track for. It is colorful, authentic, the staff is fun and the food is authentic. Every time I have to pass Michigan city on the highway, I'll try to make sure I'll be hitting it sometime around lunchtime or dinner time so I can stop at cool runnings. Sooo delicious! We came out to Michigan city for a short vacation and discovered this restaurant near our place of stay. It's known for its Jamaican Jerk Chicken. The ambience here was great! It has an open air front porch with Jamaican colors painted all over it and "Cool Runnings" emblazoned on the front. There's also a bold and beautiful mural of Bob Marley on the side wall. There is of course reggae music playing in the background as the smell of Caribbean spices waft through the air. We ordered the Jamaican Jerk chicken lunch which came with a small piece of plaintain and a side of your choice. Also included is a slice of white bread and spicy sauce in a separate cup. I got the rice and beans and my husband the green beans. There were plenty of sides to make up a good kids menu for our toddler and we got Mac and cheese for her. We also got the beef patty appetizer. Everything was delicious! My only complaint is I would have loved a larger portion of plaintain or a bigger plate of everything because it was soooo good you honestly just want more after you are done. A nice handicap ramp made it easy to enter the restaurant with a large stroller. The waitress was super friendly. I did not get to meet the chefs but the place is owned by a husband and wife team who created this secret recipe for their amazing jerk chicken.
