A great find, not far from the Blue Chip casino, with views of the water. I highly recommend the warm lobster roll and Salmon entree. The service was also prompt. My only criticism would be that the drinks were mediocre to subpar at best. Come for the seafood and view, but not the drinks. Highly recommend a table outside on the patio.

One of my favorites in Michigan City. I really don't have anything negative to say. The bartenders are great, the patrons are great and the food OMG! Let's not forget the location.

Had to go to Fish Camp on a beautiful fall day and try a few new items on the menu in addition to some favorites. As usual, they did not disappoint, with some minor exceptions. We enjoyed some pre-ordering drinks and my change up to white Sangria this trip, which was very good. The Ceviche Trio is always good and fresh. We tried the Calamari. Great portion and a nice mix with onion petals. The octopus was okay but not as good as the first time we had it. Don't know if it was light on the seasoning/sauce and/or temperature. Still trying to figure it out. The Oysters Rockefeller missed the mark this time. Seasoning and flavor were good, but the oysters were lacking in size. Previously, this had been a no brainer to order some since they were large size, but not this time. Vendor supply, availability, bottom shelf? Don't know. We shared a new item for us of Shrimp and Grits. Very flavorful. We were puzzled as to where were the grits. Discovered that the triangular Texas toast looking item on the plate were the grits. Interesting presentation but still good and maybe order in the future. Finished up with the standard Crème Brûlée. Also very good. The table service/server has ALWAYS been outstanding every time we go. Friendly, prompt, and efficient to keep the dining experience relaxed and never rushed. Thanks to Isabelle for making it another great dining experience at the Camp. The deck may have been open, but no one was using it. Inlet activity views were blocked by a dredging ship that was parked, probably to eat at the Camp, if they're smart.

Lobster roll, so good!!

Took a boat up and docked for dinner this time! Everything here is great! Lobster rolls are "chefs kiss" so good! The tuna was so fresh! Service is wonderful! We sat in the patio and it was the perfect summer evening!

Like most places around here, they do not stay open late. Check closing time before going. The have a large patio and it's beautiful to sit out here for dinner during sunset. The menu has lots of great options with a variety of seafood, sandwiches, apps and pasta. I went with the specials menu and and everything was delicious! I ate artic char fish over quinoa with tomato basil cream sauce. There is also a great kids menu offered if needed. The server was helpful and speedy, but the food did take a very long time to arrive. Almost an hour for 4 adults to get their food. Luckily we asked the kids to get their food asap to avoid meltdowns.

Mezcal Oyster shooters

The mezcal oyster shooters with blue points and diced cucumber, the lobster bisque, the fresh clam chowder, the espresso martinis (best in the area), the clam linguine, the pistachio ricotta cake.... The service, the view of Lake Michigan... perfect in summer and here also a perfect visit in winter ! Please visit fish camp! It's our favorite place close to home and is always on point !

We ordered the shrimp and crab dip and the trio ceviche for appetizers and both were amazing. I ordered the walleye entree special and it was delicious! My husband had the lobster roll and it was good as well. We sat on the deck and enjoyed the weather. Our waiter was outstanding.

Clam chowder

The four of us dined in on a Saturday evening at 5 pm and we were immediately seated. We shared a bowl of clam chowder, fresh fried clam strips, and fish and chips. The portion sizes are standard. The clam chowder was very light in flavor and the fried clam strips had an abundance of breading. I thought the cole slaw with the fish and chips was an excellent way to cut into all the fried food and batter. As we wrapped up our meal around 6 pm, we noticed there was a short wait to be seated. The restaurant was not fully seated at the time so perhaps the move was to allow the wait staff some breathing room and not be overwhelmed with the dinner rush.

Lobster Roll

Loved it! Got the pear martini, lobster roll and shrimp and grits. 10/10 would go again for sure

Yummy Bloody Mary

We were looking for somewhere to dine on Labor Day, and I saw on social media that Heron Bistro was open. I had also seen their much-loved fish and chips featured online, so I was excited to give them a try. I didn't realize until afterward that they were serving only their brunch menu on Labor Day. I completely understand the decision, but I wish that had been communicated on social media as well. I later saw the notice on their website, but it would have been helpful to know before we arrived. My husband ordered the half-pound mussels in saffron sauce with frites. He thought they were pretty good, although he wished the dish had come with a spoon so he could enjoy more of the flavorful broth at the end. I had initially been eyeing the French onion soup but ultimately decided on the French Dip with shaved ribeye, caramelized onions, Gruyère, garlic aioli and frites. At $22, I found the sandwich disappointing. The bread wasn't toasted, and I felt the sandwich was light on the ribeye and overall lacked the richness I was expecting from a French Dip. It was, unfortunately, just an average sandwich. I think this dish could be elevated quite a bit. I could envision it served open-faced on toasted bread, perhaps with garlic butter, then topped with gooey Gruyère and a generous portion of shaved ribeye. The au jus itself was tasty and had good flavor. I opted for the potato galette instead of the frites because I didn't want a plate full of fries as a filler. The galette was a nice change and something I enjoyed. Ironically, the table next to us ordered the French onion soup, and it looked absolutely amazing. I immediately wished I had stuck with my first instinct! Our server, however, was wonderful. She was professional, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. She checked on us several times and was lovely throughout our meal. Our food runner was also very pleasant. She presented our food, asked if we needed anything, and when we mentioned we needed silverware, he quickly brought it to us. The restaurant itself has a wonderful European feel when you first walk in, and I especially loved the beach-glass wall at the far end. Since it was such a beautiful day, we chose to sit outside. The enclosed patio has plenty of seating, and with the umbrellas positioned throughout, it was easy to find some shade. I think the patio has a lot of potential and could be made even more inviting. Rather than traditional umbrellas, I could envision larger sun shades paired with whimsical string lights to create a more intimate atmosphere. The owners have also done a clever job of disguising some of the exterior pipes with faux olive trees. I'd probably add a few more of those throughout the patio because they work well with the European-inspired atmosphere. One thing that distracted from the otherwise charming setting was the row of hanging pots along the wrought-iron fence. The flowers appeared to be past their prime, so I think either removing the pots altogether or replacing them with a few well-maintained window boxes filled with sun-loving plants would make a big difference. There's also a large wall overlooking the patio that I think could become a real focal point with a beautiful French-inspired mural. Of course, that would likely require working something out with the owner of the neighboring building, but it could really transform the space. The music was another small detail that I thought could be improved. Rather than classic oldies, I think some appealing instrumental dinner music would better complement the European atmosphere. Not that I minded hearing my husband sing along to Elton John, but it didn't quite match the ambiance I felt the restaurant was trying to create! From what I've read and seen online, the dinner menu looks fantastic, and I think I may have simply missed the mark with my lunch selection. There were definitely things I enjoyed about our visit -- the atmosphere, the patio, the friendly service and the au jus and potato galette -- but at the price point, I was hoping for a little more of a "wow" factor from the food. I'm rooting for Heron Bistro because I love seeing family-run businesses succeed, and I think the restaurant has a lot of potential. Perhaps I simply ordered the wrong thing this time. I'd definitely be interested in returning for dinner and trying some of the dishes that have caught my eye online before making a final judgment.

The…read moreambiance in this restaurant should be amazing, because the physical space and character of the place is really cool. The problem is the lighting and the music. The long, dangling, super bright light fixtures are distractingly bright. These either need to be dimmed, changed, or covered with something. The music is being supplied by a pair of 8 in tall Sonos speakers sitting on opposite corners of the bar. You cannot fill a space of this size with speakers that were meant for a small room. It just sounds like noise. The appetizers were pretty good, actually. We were hopeful that dinner would be solid this time, but it was a big miss. The chicken gnocchi was overcooked, dry, and lacked seasoning or flavor. My medium steak frites was cooked nearly well done and was equally dry and lacked flavor. This place has lasted a while on Franklin Street, but I'm not sure how. There are so many other nice options within walking distance. I think this place needs a new chef and some design advise.

At contract signing, we negotiated out of paying the 3% CC fee in exchange for making a very large deposit, and had the contract amended. When paying the final bill, Jeremy said they would be charging us the fee. We reminded him of our agreement but he lashed out on us and told us that if it were true, it would be in the contract. All of this was over a fee of ~$130. When we got home, we found the amended contract and sent it to him. Instead of apologizing, he refused to admit the mistake offered to personally pay the fee. It was so unprofessional and bewildering. Wedding day - During contract signing, we negotiated the bridal suite rate to a lesser amount because we only needed it during the reception hours, not the entire day. We were never told that we would be locked out after dropping off our bags & we never would have agreed to that. Only the managers could let us in, and since i didn't want to waste time tracking them down, I couldn't use the private bathroom, change into my reception dress, or just have a few moments of peace with my husband to soak in the day.. - The dance floor was live-streamed to play in the cocktail bar area, & we were supposed to get a copy of it. When we asked about it later, Jeremy told us that it was not recorded because we had a videographer. (the videographer was my photographer's 11 year old son) - We were told that the decor items we brought in would be boxed up for us to take the next morning. When we arrived, nothing was boxed up. Admittedly, we had A LOT of candles so it would have been a big undertaking for them, but I wish he would have told us that they couldn't, so that we could have brought more family and friends to help us. Other situations - we were not told that there would be a charge for kids until the final bill. Jeremy told us kids aged 7+ would be charged $19, (half the adult price) which made no sense when there is a $8 soda package for adults. Judy later corrected this to being for kids 13+ - We had it in writing that the sound engineer fee for a live band was $400. Later, that was changed to $750 because our band was 7 pieces. Jeremy tried getting us to pay the $750 but we refused - Jeremy told us that if we wanted our vendors to set up earlier than one hour prior to start time, we would have to pay a large hourly manager fee. It felt like a cash-grab, but fortunately Judy said she would be there in the morning and they could come whenever. - We didn't find out that they planned to serve drinks in disposable plastic until 2 months before our wedding. We had to scramble to rent glassware Despite this, we had the best night of our lives and our wedding was everything I could ever dream of and more. Uptown Social is SUCH a beautiful venue and it has such great potential. It makes me so sad that our experience with them had to end like this. But I want to end this on a high note. The positives - Judy is one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever met. She felt like a second mom, and I will never forget her compassion and kindness - The venue is stunning, and the improvements kept coming. It is truly a hidden gem - The beverage packages are very reasonably priced, and the signature drink they made for us was delicious (despite a complicated recipe!) - The lighting/uplighting was spectacular and fully customizable

Worth a stop…read more I picked this place out from my map function because it looked interesting, on the water, and near an historic, old railroad bridge (Trail Creek Swing Bridge). It is my first time here, and for a late afternoon linner. The place did not disappoint--for the most part. It is open air with a beachy, boaty, picnic tables-under-umbrellas vibe. It overlooks the water, a marina, and the name inspiring railroad swing bridge which makes for an interesting visual environment. Thankfully there is no attempt to force an out of place theme, sparing us from steel drum background music. Interestingly though, the only nod to the railroad structure inspired name was an old school railroad crossing sign at the entry otherwise everything else is boat marina feel. Our server was friendly and efficient. My hefty burger was thick and juicy. The coleslaw was fresh. The disappointment was the fries. They were more like shoestring fries and came dried out/overcooked. The sweet potatoes fries were a better bet. The lackluster fries were not enough though to lose a star. Overall the experience was a satisfying one and at a reasonable price. I would definitely come back especially as a very nice alternative to the other railroad name inspired brewery restaurant in town.
