Apparently, whatever I had planned for the afternoon was no longer relevant. I can't really argue with the decision because this turned out to be such a fun and unique place. The first thing you notice is that this isn't just an ice cream shop. There are multiple rooms filled with candy, chocolates, treats and all sorts of things that make you want to slow down and look at everything. There is a slightly retro feel to the whole place, and I mean that in the best possible way. You can very easily lose track of time wandering from room to room, looking at the candy, checking out the chocolates and trying to decide what you absolutely need to take home. Then there is the ice cream. The sundaes are fantastic because you get to build your own and load them up with whatever toppings you want. And they aren't stingy with the toppings, either. The ice cream itself was delicious, with a great selection of flavors, and the whole experience of putting together your own sundae makes it especially fun if you're with kids. Although, judging by my wife's reaction, you don't actually have to be a kid to enjoy it. They also make their own ice cream and have a wide variety of candies and chocolates made in-house. You absolutely need to try some of the "in haus" chocolates while you're there. There is something particularly satisfying about buying something that was actually made right there rather than grabbing another generic packaged candy bar. The staff were incredibly friendly and added to the experience. Everyone seemed genuinely welcoming, which is important in a place like this because you want to be able to wander around, ask questions and take your time looking at everything. Nobody made us feel rushed, and there is so much to see that rushing would almost defeat the purpose. This is a great place for the entire family. Kids are going to love the candy and ice cream, adults will appreciate the nostalgic atmosphere and the homemade treats, and honestly, everyone is going to walk out with something they didn't intend to buy. We certainly did. My wife may have had something slightly different in mind when she decided we needed to stop here, but she walked out looking like a little kid who had just been turned loose in a candy store, carrying a sundae, candies and chocolates. I wasn't exactly empty-handed myself. A really fun and unexpected find in the Lakes Region. If you're anywhere around Lake Winnipesaukee, this is absolutely worth a stop. It's charming, a little nostalgic, completely indulgent and just plain fun. I can see why people consider it one of the area's best-kept candy secrets. We'll definitely be back.

The flavor options and pricing are at the cash register and you can't really see either from afar, which makes it feel rushed when you get to that point. The pricing I think is getting pretty high for what it is. They no longer scoop the ice cream in front of you - the ice cream is around the corner. When we got to the smorgasbord, the whipped cream wasn't working/was empty. The workers didn't seem to want to fix it, and once you leave the line you can't re-enter. Pretty disappointing to not be able to get their homemade whipped cream they rave about. For almost $9 for a one scoop make-your-own before tax, it was honestly not a great experience today. We miss the nostalgia of this place - it's becoming more industrialized and less sentimental.

We stayed up at Steele Hill for…read morethe weekend and passed this little shop a couple times during our stay and I knew I had to stop in before we went back home. So glad we did! The fudge is to die for and they have so many different flavors to choose from. The shop also sells NH and NH made novelty items... maple syrup, tea, soy candles, chocolates, T-shirt's, sweaters, mugs, body scrubs, popcorn, etc. Although you have lots to choose from and the fudge is amazing... the best part is the warm and friendly service we received even before getting out of our car. The owner was extremely warm and helpful... and customer service is number one in my book! He mentions he will be expanding services even more in the months to come. And I can't wait to be back to have some tea while getting a foot massage and eating some fudge! If you're in the area, passing by, or even if you're not in the area... add this little hidden gem to your list of stops to make. You won't regret it!

She's very picky--you'd think that a rock wouldn't be hard to find in the Granite State, but she had stipulations. Plus, it had just snowed about 3 feet, so any rocks that might around sure weren't visible. So, we called around to a few places to ask about rocks. We got a lot of puzzled looks (through the phone), until we reached George. He said, "Well... sure we have rocks. Are you staying Steele Hill Resort?" We were. "Okay, come by tomorrow, and I'll have a couple rocks for you." So, we went. The shop was clearly closed for the winter season, but we called George and he can down from his home (on the same property) and gave us a selection of rocks from the boundary wall of his property. We tried to give him some money, but he refused. We told him thanks and that we would have to come back sometime to check out his shop. He asked if we wanted to check out the candy, and we said, okay, if not too much trouble. Nothing was too much trouble for George. He opened up the shop, told us about how it was a labor of love for him and his family, lots of local goods, including maple syrup from the farm up the street. And fudge, all sorts of different, delicious fudge. They also had plenty of novelty gifts, hand-screened sweatshirts and t-shirts, and a little coffee nook overlooking the fields and lake in the distance (can't remember if we could see the lake--but it was there!). Needless to say, we couldn't help ourselves from picking up a few souvenirs and happily supporting a local business and businessman who obviously cared about his customers and how he treats them. We can't say enough nice things about Granite Life--friendly, convenient if you're in the area, wide selection of souvenirs with local flare, and just a generally good vibe to take home with you.
