Butternut Squash + Leek Soup
Lindsey H.

Chef Steven prepared an incredible dinner for 4 guests for my mom's 60th birthday at an Airbnb in Sedona. He helpfully got on a call with me the week before to walk through my thoughts on the menu and was easy to communicate with. The night of, he and one server/assistant arrived punctually and quickly whipped the kitchen into a cooking frenzy. I was impressed by the printed menu, his setup in the kitchen (he pretty much brings everything he needs to cook), and his friendly demeanor (taking questions from the group throughout his preparation). Our appetizers were delicious (deconstructed elote and guacamole), but we were too full to enjoy the last couple courses (butternut squash/leek soup, Nepali chana salad, and snapper), so I'd recommend careful menu planning so as to not start too heavy. We were glad to have leftovers to enjoy for lunch the next day!

I hired Chef Steven to cook a dinner for two for my husband's 40th birthday. We have used probated chefs in the past and have loved the experience. He was very easy to communicate with and quick to respond. He respected my request for no onions in anything. He went a large list of courses to choose from. I wish there was more guidance/suggestions. It all seemed kinda of random and I couldn't tell what would go well with what. The food was all delicious but it did not flow well. The first three courses I chose were very sweet and it was too much sweet right after the other. It would have been nice to here suggestions. He did arrive on time and was very organized. But seemed hurried all night- while cooking and specially at the end when he was ready to leave. Which explains why the kitchen was such a mess the next day. I was also very surprised by the grocery bill. He quoted me a cost for cooking plus food. In the past with chef's, I got one flat rate. Then when they were done cooking, they left all of the extra groceries and food for us. We have had food for days after experiences like this. Chef Steven seemed like he threw everything away. Which was bothersome since I paid what seemed to be a lot for the grocery part. Pros- he was very nice, beautiful plating, on time, delicious food. Cons- expensive, wastes food, not enough guidance, there is a mess in your kitchen after.

And the lobster!

Over the course of a week I called, sent a text, and sent 2-3 emails. I received an email stating…read moreI would get a menu. Never came. I emailed again. Zip. If you have any sort of timeline at all or care about communication this is probably not the best company for you.

I had been passing by Just Great Food for a few weeks and intended to stop by the new bakery. I…read morefinally did a few days ago, and was glad I did. They did not have the buns I needed for dinner, but had some clearly homemade bread available (whole wheat sandwich loaves as well as cheese and olive free-form). I opted to try some of their pastries. I tried a giant white cupcake filled with raspberry chocolate mousse. It was just OK. But the cookies- oh freaking my. The snickerdoodle was scrumptious, and the peanut butter might have been the best PB cookie I have ever had- and my husband agreed. It was huge and soft and still kind of doughy- just what he loves. I also got a giant bar cookie (I can't recall its name) with oatmeal and marbled with fudge and caramel. So, so very good. They also had great looking macaroons, Napoleons, linzer cookies, almond cookies, muffins, and much more. They open at 7:00 am, which is a little late for me. But maybe someday I'll stop in and get a lunch box to go. It looked like they had a great selection of sandwiches. Just Great Food bills itself as an all-occasion and corporate caterer, but they also do personal chef services, holiday dinners, and custom cakes. I asked about timing for cakes, and they request at least a 2-day notice. The storefront is located in a tiny strip mall with a Circle-K near a Sinclair gas station (the one with the dinosaur logo- that's always my landmark). I'll be back to try more of their pastries, and load up on PB cookies for the Hubby-monster at home.
