One of three popular Southern fast food chains that my wife and I wanted to visit during our Carolina trip, Cook Out provided a typical burger experience at a good price. The first Cook Out restaurant opened in Greensboro, NC in 1989. They opened their first non-NC store in SC in 2010, and has continued to grow till now reaching over 360 locations around the South. All their ground beef is delivered fresh to each store, adhering to their motto of "Always Fresh, Never Frozen". We visited this location, in the heart of the tourist zone in Myrtle Beach. Only their drive-thru and walk-up are open, with their dining room continuing to be closed (though they have a few picnic tables in their parking lot). They are known for their burgers and milkshakes, a formula used by practically every successful burger shack. Their combo meals are called 'trays', so we got two regular trays. First ($7.99) consisted of a Big Dbl with grilled onions and cheese (+0.55), added tomato (+0.10). The sides were white cheddar bites (tasted similar to fried cheese curds) and fries (skin-on). I upgraded the beverage from a soda to a Oreo Mint Shake (+1.50). Added a side of hush puppies for $1.99. Second ($7.99) was 3 chicken strips, cole slaw, and onion rings with peanut butter fudge upgrade (+1.50). It didn't take too long for the order to completed, bringing it back to eat in our kitchenette back at the resort. It was plenty of food, with the burger being exactly how I like it. The shakes were very thick, and easily savable for later...we ate it like ice cream. All the rest were solid, with generous portions...it's what you would expect from any cafeteria that has a good deep fryer, very good for the price. The cole slaw was just finely diced cabbage which added some needed fiber to the meal. And the hush puppy pieces were very dense, two were plenty for me...it's the ultimate cheap filler food. read more

Visiting the Cook Out was such a weird experience. We walked there from our hotel only to find that there was no in-store ordering option (and no drive through). There was a window that you ordered at. The people inside were so busy that the window rarely opened. About 20 other people and I stood outside in the rain crossing our fingers that the window would open and give out food or take an order. Haha. I'm from the west coast. We just wanted to order milkshakes so it wasn't bad that the dining room was closed and luckily it was not raining. They have a ton of flavor options and the food menu is huge. This is our first time going there so I will say this is based on a first time experience. It was weird that you can't eat inside but I'm sure it's because of the lack of staff but we had to order outside and eat inside our car. I love that you can order trays and they're not very expensive. The chicken nuggets were okay but they were not the best. The grilled chicken with the honey mustard was pretty delicious and I would definitely eat it again. The French fries were okay. But overall I think the actual chicken sandwich was the best. My son got a hot dog and really loved it and loved that he could get chicken nuggets and a hot dog. Overall I would definitely be back and the people that were working there were really nice. Drive through around 9 pm. I had friends in from Calif and they had never been to a Cook Out. So they had a lot of questions but the guy was really nice and patient. First of all Cook Out is the best bang for your dollar and food is decent. Thus the 2 grade. The dining room is closed which is restrictive to there business as you eat to go or on outside picnic tables. Hard to do when raining and cool. Also wind blows paper products all over. Then the man in the window taking orders was rude and condescending. Said dining room has been closed for 7 years as if I should know that Also asked about bathrooms and said they were inside and they do not allow anyone inside. Maybe against code but definitely a poor policy. Wanted to clean up and go to the bathroom after a long drive and couldn't. Although the food is reasonably priced and decent we will not be back. My family and I stopped in while on vacation. We were actually in quite a bit of a rush as we had an appointment to get to in about 25 minutes time to spare. They were eight of us in a transit van. We pulled in and all got out just to find out that the dining room is closed. Now as a mother, with eight people in the car, all of us being first timers so we didn't know the menu, imagine my instant panic. But we were short on time, and I'll need to be fed (this mama was hangry). So we decided to give it a shot and went through the drive-through. Luckily, we were the only car, but as you can imagine everyone trying to order was a bit of a headache. I was very skeptical on how this was going to go. To my surprise, our order was out in three minutes. Three minutes!! we don't eat a lot of fast food as a whole, but I do know that three minutes is astronomical in the food industry. All of our orders were correct, with the exception of lettuce and tomato being added to a burger, but not "wrong" by any means. Since this is our first cookout experience, I am absolutely impressed! We went here for their burgers onion rings and coleslaw and they all tasted pretty good but the shining star was there banana pudding milkshake. It had real bits of banana in it with cookies and was absolutely the best dessert I had in a long time! I can't wait to go back here for another milkshake! This place is great! We couldn't believe how cheap it was. While in Myrtle Beach, we were looking for a quick place to grab dinner as we had a long day and our three year old was getting pretty tired. I hopped on Yelp and you guys did not steer us wrong. 4.5 stars! I was on a vacation and discovered Cook Out by accident! How could I be traveling to different places all along and not know or even heard about Cook Out?!? My first visit at Cook Out turned into a second...and third visit there during my time in SC! I simply fell in love with the chain...partly because of the vast selection of food...side dishes..and..of course the different types of yummy milkshakes that they offered! Their meals...price wise...were so economical. I probably can't say much about calories (esp given the sides of hush puppies and the milkshakes that I so enjoyed!)..but..I think it's a good deal..that I wished I live near this chain! But perhaps it's good I'm not nearby any of their establishments. Else, it's super dangerous to my waistline for sure! The cook out tray (combo meal) is the bomb what what you should be getting there! You get your pick of the main burger type...2 sides (my pick = hush puppies and coleslaw...to go with the southern style of travel!)..and a drink. I came here on the night of 4/16/21 around 2am. It's cookout and one of few places open that late. I'm visiting the area for my bday. Of course, there was many other tourists too. The drive thru line was extremely long. I went to the walk up window as the line was shorter. There was 1-2 parties in front of me. Wait was fairly short for ordering. After ordering, it took about 10-12 mins to get the food. One order was a cookout tray and I got a bunless big double burger w/ cheese and bacon plus a side of chili. Note: I'm doing keto. When I got back to my hotel, the burger looked really small to be over $4 ($3 for burger and about $1.25 for bacon and cheese). Nonetheless, I put the burger and bacon on my keto bread and added chili on top. It was good. I ate the chili alone too. First time here...my boyfriend hear about this place from his friend. It's a similar concept as In and Out. The menu is big and there are shakes. I order a Cajun spice grilled sandwich, fries, onion rings, double patties burger, corn dog, and two shakes. The whole bill came to $20 something. Very cheap. Meh. I've always been told to try a CookOut and this was not all it was hyped up to be. Husband and I got burgers--they were dry and just ok. Ordered Cajun fries--got normal French fries. My husband ordered cheese bites and literally got 3. Daughter got chicken tenders with bbq and they forgot the sauce. I loved this place. We live in Ohio and all the way down to Myrtle Beach we saw billboards for Cook Out, a place I had never been or heard of. Once at Myrtle, I stopped with the kids and was so pleased with the menu, the food, and the value. The food was good, I got the barbecue chicken, the kids got a $1 hot dog and corn dog. The best part is the value of the food. For $5.69 I got the sandwich, fries, onion rings and a cheerwine float that was served with generous amounts of ice cream. For $1 more you can upgrade to a milkshake. All the food was good but not inspired or amazing. But for the price you get a lot and it is better than most fast food fare. I left satisfied and wanting to go back. A big reason I want to go back is because the menu offers so many choices and combinations. I want to try a burger or spicy chicken sandwich and different sides next time. Again, I would stress this is not the best food you will ever eat, but the price and variety of the options and the value you get couple with the enjoyable food makes this a solid 5 star stop. read more

Oddly enough, this fast food chain had amazing food for a really inexpensive price. First time we ever tried one. Burgers were hot and greasy and delicious. Spicy chicken was tasty and full of quality chicken. Onion rings excellent. Fries were good. Cheese bites were awesome. Tried cheerwine soda. If I drank soda when not on vacation, I'd be hooked. Wish they had it up north. The cashier who took our orders was very patient and nice. Explained how the trays work--pick your sandwich, then you get to pick two sides, and a drink.
